As I sit here, reflecting on our first day in the Slovak Paradise National Park, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. Being back in Slovakia, exploring these breathtaking landscapes with Katarína, feels like a homecoming. It's a journey not just through nature, but through memories, reconnecting with the land of my birth and sharing it with my wife. Today was all about setting the stage for the adventures to come, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Our drive from Potsdam was smooth, filled with anticipation as we approached the familiar terrains of Slovakia. The weather in September is usually quite pleasant, and today was no exception, with warm temperatures and a gentle breeze. It's the perfect time for hiking, though we're keeping an eye out for potential rain and thunderstorms. As we approached the park, the dramatic scenery began to unfold, and I felt that familiar tug at my heart – a sense of belonging that only this land can evoke.

Our first stop was the symbolic 'Gateway to the Slovak Paradise'. While not a specific, physical gate, it’s more of a feeling – a transition into a realm of natural wonder. It’s the point where the everyday world fades, and the adventure truly begins. The park itself is open at all times, allowing us to start whenever we liked.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

For breakfast, we stopped at Cafe & Bufet u Orla in Podlesok. It’s a charming spot, perfect for grabbing a bite before venturing into the park. The cafe is known for its simple and tasty dishes, and the staff were incredibly friendly, even speaking English. I had a hearty plate of *praženica* (scrambled eggs) and *káva*, while Katarína enjoyed a *žemľa* with *šunka* (ham roll). It was the perfect fuel for our day of exploration.

After breakfast, we made a quick stop at a local mineral and crystal shop. I remember visiting similar shops as a child with my parents, marveling at the colorful stones and intricate formations. Katarína, always fascinated by geology, was in her element, examining various specimens of quartz and pyrite. We picked up a small piece of opal, a gemstone found in Slovakia, as a memento of our trip. The shop was a treasure trove of natural beauty, reminding us of the geological richness hidden beneath the surface of this land.

For lunch, we headed to Ranč Podlesok, a restaurant known for its traditional Slovak cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The *ranč* is nestled in the heart of the Podlesok recreational area, offering a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. We sat on the sunny terrace, enjoying the views of the High Tatras while savoring our meal. I ordered *bryndzové halušky*, a classic Slovak dish of potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon, while Katarína opted for *kapustnica*, a hearty sauerkraut soup. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was exactly what we needed to relax and recharge.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll around the Podlesok area, soaking in the scenery and planning our hikes for the coming days. We checked out some of the nearby attractions, like the Malý Majer Podlesok, which seemed like a fun place for kids. I was reminded of childhood trips with my family to similar spots.

Before dinner, we spent some time setting up our campsite. We chose a spot that offered both seclusion and easy access to the trails. Camping is the best way to fully embrace the tranquility and natural beauty of the park. As the sun began to set, we prepared a simple campfire meal of sausages roasted over the open flame, accompanied by some crusty bread and local *pivo*. The crackling fire, the scent of wood smoke, and the stunning views created a magical atmosphere.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves at Reštaurácia U Hudáka in Hrabušice. This restaurant is known for its delicious food and friendly service. The restaurant is conveniently located and easily accessible. I ordered the *krúpoto s bryndzou* (barley risotto with sheep cheese), which was absolutely amazing. Katarína chose the grilled trout, which she said was perfectly cooked. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great value for money. The staff were welcoming, making us feel right at home.

As the day drew to a close, we returned to our campsite, the stars beginning to pepper the night sky. We sat by the fire, sipping on hot tea and reminiscing about our adventures. We also made sure to double-check our gear for tomorrow’s hike, ensuring we had everything we needed for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to tackle Suchá Belá, one of the most famous gorges in Slovak Paradise. Known for its ladders and waterfalls, it promises to be an exhilarating experience. We'll have breakfast at Salaš Čingov, grab lunch at Chata Kláštorisko, and perhaps unwind with a drink at Kilderkin Podlesok after our hike. I’m particularly excited to share this trail with Katarína, as it embodies the adventurous spirit of Slovak Paradise.

As I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but feel grateful for this opportunity to reconnect with my roots and share this beautiful place with my wife. The Slovak Paradise is more than just a national park; it’s a part of me, a place where memories are made and cherished. And I can't wait for the next day!

I am especially glad that I remembered to bring my camera. I almost forgot mosquito repellent, but luckily I remembered it just in time! I did, however, forget my binoculars, which I'm regretting a little bit. I'll have to see if I can buy a pair at the local shop tomorrow.

It's wonderful to be back. I feel at home.
