Whispers of the Past, Echoes of the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a harmonious blend of nature's artistry and humanity's ancient echoes. The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park continues to surprise me with its hidden treasures. It’s fascinating how Portugal manages to hold onto its history while embracing the present. Today’s journey was a testament to that, and I can’t wait to share the details.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Olha a Tosta in Nisa. I opted for a traditional *tosta mista* (mixed toast) with cheese and ham, along with a strong *café com leite* to fuel up for the day's adventures. It's amazing how such a simple breakfast can be so satisfying, especially when enjoyed in a cozy café filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread. I made a mental note to try to replicate the *tosta* back home for Klara and Mateo; they would love it.
With renewed energy, I set off for the Trilho da Barca d'Amieira - Passadiços de Nisa, a trail I had been eagerly anticipating. The trail is known for its stunning views of the Tejo River and the unique wooden walkways that meander along the riverbanks. The drive to the trailhead was scenic in itself, with rolling hills and cork oak trees lining the roads. Finding parking near the Amieira do Tejo was easy enough, and soon I was embarking on the trail.

The Passadiços de Nisa were truly remarkable. The wooden walkways seemed to float above the landscape, providing an intimate connection with nature. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wild herbs and the gentle murmur of the river. The trail was well-maintained, making it easy to navigate, and I found myself completely immersed in the tranquility of the surroundings.
The trail is about 3.5 km each way and is mostly flat. I chose to start near the Amieira do Tejo picnic park. Along the way, I encountered several attractions, including a suspended bridge, a skywalk with a glass floor, and various viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the Fratel Dam and the Tejo River. While the skywalk might not be for the faint of heart, the structure felt secure, and the view was simply breathtaking.
“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”
One aspect that struck me was the integration of art along the trail. While some might find the painted rocks and iron figures a bit out of place, I appreciated the attempt to add a touch of creativity to the natural landscape. It’s these little details that make each trail unique and memorable. I took my time, stopping frequently to capture photographs and soak in the atmosphere. The autumn colors were in full display, with hues of gold, brown, and red painting the landscape.
After completing the Trilho da Barca d'Amieira, I was ready for a late lunch. I headed to Snack Bar Restaurante Boavista in Nisa, a place recommended for its homemade meals and friendly service. I opted for a *prego no pão* (steak sandwich) and a refreshing glass of *Sumol*. The sandwich was simple but delicious, the steak tender and flavorful. The terrace was a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the pleasant afternoon weather.
With my appetite satisfied, I drove to the Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros, located a short distance from Castelo de Vide. This megalithic park is a testament to the ancient history of the region, with several menhirs dating back to the 4th and 3rd millennia BC. The park consists of several sites, each with its own unique features.

As I wandered through the park, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. These ancient stones have stood for thousands of years, witnessing the rise and fall of civilizations. It's humbling to think about the people who erected these monuments and the rituals they may have performed here. The landscape was stark and beautiful, with the menhirs silhouetted against the sky.
The most impressive site was Anta Grande dos Coureleiros, one of the largest megalithic monuments in the area. Despite some erosion, seven standing stones are still visible, giving a sense of the monument's original grandeur. It's fascinating to imagine how these stones were transported and erected without the aid of modern technology. The park offers a glimpse into the lives of our ancestors and the enduring power of human ingenuity.
Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to stop by O Castelo - Café Lounge in Marvão for a drink. Although it was a bit of a drive, I’d heard good things about the views from there. It certainly didn't disappoint. Perched high on a hilltop, the café offered panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat on the terrace, watching the sunset over the Serra de São Mamede. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

For dinner, I chose A Adega in Nisa. The restaurant had a cozy, traditional atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I decided to try one of their local specialties. It was a hearty and flavorful dish, perfect for a chilly autumn evening. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great value.
