Kyoto's Timeless Charm: A Day in Gion & Yasaka Shrine
Today, I had the incredible opportunity to delve deeper into the heart of Kyoto, exploring the enchanting district of Gion and the serene Yasaka Shrine. As a mobile app developer specializing in tourism, I'm always looking for ways to enhance the travel experience, and today was all about immersing ourselves in the cultural richness of this ancient city. Join me as I recount our family's day of exploration, filled with geisha sightings, spiritual awakenings, and culinary delights.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast and lunch at Komefuku. I've always believed that food is an integral part of experiencing a culture, and Komefuku certainly delivered on that front. The restaurant had such a cozy atmosphere, which made me feel right at home. It was the perfect way to start our day of exploration.

After our delightful meal, we set out to explore Gion, Kyoto's most famous geisha district. The area is known for its preserved wooden machiya townhouses, and as we strolled through the narrow streets, I felt as though we had been transported back in time. Gion's history dates back to the Middle Ages when it served as a rest area for travelers and pilgrims visiting the nearby Yasaka Shrine. Today, it remains a vibrant cultural hub, attracting visitors from all over the world.
As we wandered through Gion, my eyes were peeled, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha. Klara, Mateo and I learned that geishas in Kyoto are referred to as 'geiko', which means 'a woman of art.' The term perfectly captures the essence of these highly skilled women who are trained in traditional arts like dance, music, and tea ceremony. It wasn't long before we spotted a geiko gracefully making her way to an ochaya, or teahouse. It was a magical moment, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for these women who carry on such a beautiful tradition.
To walk through Gion is to walk through the heart of Kyoto, where history, culture, and tradition intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.
We continued our exploration of Gion, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. We learned that Gion is divided into two main districts: Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi. Gion Kobu is the larger of the two and is home to the famous Hanamikoji Street, while Gion Higashi is smaller and centered on its rehearsal hall. Despite the decline in the number of geisha in recent years, Gion remains a place where traditional architecture and entertainment are preserved.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine. Situated at the east end of Shijō-dōri, this Shinto shrine is one of the most famous in Kyoto. The shrine's history dates back to 656, and it has played a significant role in Kyoto's cultural heritage for over a millennium. As we approached the shrine, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence and awe.

We entered through the main gate and were immediately struck by the beauty of the shrine's buildings. The main hall combines the honden (inner sanctuary) and haiden (offering hall) into a single structure. In front of it stands a dance stage with hundreds of lanterns, each bearing the name of a local business. The lanterns are lit in the evenings, creating a magical atmosphere.
As we explored the shrine, we learned about its significance in Japanese culture. Yasaka Shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a god of storms and sea, and his consort Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto. The shrine is also known for its summer festival, the Gion Matsuri, which dates back over a thousand years. The festival involves a procession with massive floats and hundreds of participants and the locals were busy preparing for the upcoming event. Although we were visiting in January, it was easy to imagine the excitement and energy that fills the shrine during the festival.
After our visit to Yasaka Shrine, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. This restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building and is known for its Italian cuisine. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, and the food was absolutely delicious. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring Kyoto's cultural treasures.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experiences we had. From the enchanting streets of Gion to the serene beauty of Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto had captured our hearts and souls. I felt a deep appreciation for the city's rich history and culture, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.
Before heading back to our hotel, we decided to make a pit stop at Bar K6. I had read about this bar and was intrigued by its reputation as one of Kyoto's best cocktail bars. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, and the cocktail menu was extensive. I opted for a classic Old Fashioned, while Klara tried a Japanese-inspired concoction. Both drinks were expertly crafted and delicious. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. Mateo enjoyed a sparkling apple juice, feeling very grown up to be in a bar.

As we sipped our drinks, I couldn't help but think about the incredible day we had. We had immersed ourselves in Kyoto's culture, explored its historical landmarks, and indulged in its culinary delights. It was a day that I would cherish forever, and I knew that it was just the beginning of our family's adventure in Japan.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Nijō Castle and the Kyoto Imperial Palace, eager to uncover more of Kyoto's historical treasures. I’m particularly excited about visiting the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store – Mateo is a huge fan, and I know he’ll be thrilled. It's moments like these, sharing new experiences with my family, that make travel so rewarding. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings!
Until then, sayōnara!
