A Glimpse into Kyoto's Golden Heart

Today was a day of shimmering gold and tranquil gardens, a true immersion into the heart of Kyoto's cultural heritage. With Klara, Mateo, and me in tow, we set out to explore two of Kyoto's most iconic temples, each offering a unique glimpse into the city's rich history and spiritual essence. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing our family's adventures and experiences with all of you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. It was a charming little place. The owner was incredibly welcoming. We enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast. Mateo especially loved the tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette). I always appreciate starting the day with a good meal; it sets the tone for everything that follows. It's also a great way to introduce Mateo to new flavors and culinary traditions.

Our first stop was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached, the sight of the temple shimmering in the morning sun took my breath away. The reflection of the golden structure on the serene pond was simply mesmerizing. It felt like stepping into a postcard. The temple's history, originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, is as fascinating as its beauty. Mateo was especially captivated by the golden phoenix on the roof. He kept pointing and asking questions about it. I tried my best to explain the symbolism and significance of the phoenix in Japanese culture.

We strolled through the meticulously landscaped gardens surrounding the temple. The winding paths led us past ponds, waterfalls, and carefully arranged stones. Each element seemed to be placed with intention and purpose. The crisp winter air and the serene atmosphere created a sense of peace and tranquility. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Of course, no photo could truly do it justice. Experiencing it in person is something else entirely.

After Kinkaku-ji, we made our way to Ninna-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich imperial history. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, Ninna-ji served as a residence for members of the imperial family who became head priests. This unique blend of imperial authority and Buddhist practice is evident throughout the temple complex.

The Niomon gate at the entrance was imposing, guarded by two fierce Nio statues. Mateo was a little intimidated at first, but I explained that they were protectors of the temple. He then wanted to know all about their weapons and armor. We explored the vast grounds. We admired the stunning five-story pagoda and the Kondo Hall, a National Treasure that was relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The architecture was truly impressive, a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of the past.

The gardens at Ninna-ji were equally enchanting, with serene ponds, meticulously maintained flora, and carefully placed stones. Although the famous Omuro cherry blossoms are not in bloom during this time of year, I could imagine how stunning the gardens must look in spring. We took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beauty of the surroundings. Klara, with her architectural eye, was particularly interested in the design and layout of the gardens. She pointed out the subtle details and the way the different elements harmonized with each other.

For lunch, we visited Nishikawa, a restaurant known for its refined and innovative Japanese cuisine. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, exuding an understated elegance. We opted for the lunch course, which featured a series of beautifully presented dishes highlighting seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art. The flavors were delicate and nuanced. Mateo, surprisingly, was quite adventurous, trying everything that was offered. Klara and I savored each bite. We appreciated the skill and artistry that went into creating such a memorable culinary experience.

In the afternoon, we decided to do some shopping at Daimaru Kyoto Store. This department store offers a wide range of goods, from high-end fashion to local crafts. We were particularly interested in the food floor, a culinary paradise with a diverse selection of gourmet delights. We picked up some souvenirs for friends and family back in Potsdam. I couldn't resist buying a few traditional Japanese sweets for myself.

As we browsed the store, I couldn't help but reflect on the differences between shopping in Japan and shopping in Germany. In Japan, there seems to be a greater emphasis on presentation and customer service. The attention to detail is remarkable. Even the way the goods are packaged is a work of art.

Before dinner, we had planned to attend the Ōmato Archery Competition at Sanjūsangen-dō. However, Mateo was starting to get tired, so we decided to skip it and head back to the hotel for a short rest. It's important to be flexible when traveling with kids. Sometimes, you have to adjust your plans to accommodate their needs.

For dinner, we had a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in Kyo-ryori (Kyoto cuisine). The restaurant was located near Kawaramachi Station. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and refinement. The presentation was more like a live performance. The chef's sincere approach to creating his own cuisine without being shackled by tradition was evident in every dish.

The non-traditional flavors of this kaiseki were a refreshing change. The bold-flavored plates were memorable. The tastes at Kikunoi Roan may well be more in keeping with the preferences of non-Japanese, but that did not stop us from venturing out of our comfort zone. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and exploration.

As we headed back to the hotel, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. We'll be exploring Gion, Kyoto's geisha district, and visiting Yasaka Shrine. I'm particularly excited to wander through the narrow streets of Gion. I hope to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko gracefully making their way to an appointment. We also plan to stop by Bar K6 for a nightcap. I've heard great things about their cocktails.

Today was a reminder of the beauty and richness of Japanese culture. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. I look forward to discovering what tomorrow brings.
