Immerse yourself in Matera's ancient wonders: cave churches, Murgia Park's beauty, & exquisite dining experiences. A journey through time & taste!
Whispers of the Past, Flavors of the Present
Today was a day of deep exploration, not just of Matera's physical landscape, but also its historical and spiritual heart. From the breathtaking views of the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana, to the intimate frescoes of a cave church, and the explosion of flavors in local restaurants, Matera continued to reveal its unique charm. It's a journey that resonates with my love for history and my passion for experiencing different cultures, a blend that makes traveling so enriching.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante'900 Casa Taccardi. The reviews I had seen online were glowing, and it certainly lived up to the hype. I opted for a traditional Materan breakfast, which included local cheeses, fresh bread, and a selection of cured meats. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. My friends and I sat outside, enjoying the crisp morning air and the stunning views of the Sassi. The service was impeccable, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. It’s these little moments of connection that make a trip memorable, and I already felt a strong connection to Matera.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana. This park offers a panoramic view of the Sassi, and I was eager to capture it with my camera. The park itself is a landscape of rocky hills, caves, and ancient churches. As we hiked along the trails, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history that surrounded us. It's incredible to think that people have lived in these caves for thousands of years, and their stories are etched into the very stones beneath our feet.
The beauty of Matera lies not just in its stunning views, but in the palpable sense of history that permeates every corner, a testament to human resilience and ingenuity.
The views from the Murgia Park were, as expected, breathtaking. The Sassi stretched out before us, a maze of stone houses and churches clinging to the hillside. The September sun cast long shadows, adding depth and texture to the scene. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the essence of this ancient city. It's a view that truly captures the spirit of Matera, a place where time seems to stand still. I was glad I remembered to bring my camera, although I did forget to pack an extra memory card, which I will need to purchase tomorrow.
After spending the morning hiking in the Murgia Park, we drove back towards the Sassi to visit the Church of Saint Mary of Idris. This rock-hewn church is carved into the side of a limestone cliff and offers a unique glimpse into the religious history of Matera. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and its name, Idris, comes from the Greek word Odigitria, meaning guide of the way. The climb up to the church was a bit steep, but the views from the top were well worth the effort.
Inside, the church was small and intimate. The walls were covered in ancient frescoes, some dating back to the 12th century. Although some of the frescoes were damaged, I could still make out the figures of saints and biblical scenes. It was a humbling experience to stand in this ancient space, surrounded by the artwork of generations past. The church is connected to the crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone through a tunnel, which contains more frescoes from the 12th to the 17th centuries. Walking through the tunnel, I felt like I was stepping back in time, connecting with the people who had worshipped here centuries ago. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to learn about different cultures and religions, and to appreciate the shared history of humanity.
For lunch, we decided to try Pietra Viva, a restaurant known for its modern takes on traditional Lucanian cuisine. The restaurant is located in the heart of the Sassi, and its outdoor seating area offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I ordered the pasta al pesto, which was made with fresh, local ingredients. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of herbs, cheese, and olive oil. My friends ordered the lamb and the rabbit, both of which they raved about. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect spot to recharge after a morning of exploring.
As the afternoon wore on, we took some time to wander through the streets of Matera, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. I found myself drawn to the artisan shops, where local craftsmen were selling their wares. I purchased a small ceramic replica of a traditional Materan house, a memento of my time here. I also stopped at a local bakery to sample some of the regional sweets. Everything was delicious, and I couldn't resist buying a few extra treats to take back to the hotel.
Before dinner, we stopped by AREA 8, a bar known for its creative cocktails and lively atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the evening air. I ordered a local craft beer, while my friends opted for cocktails. The drinks were expertly made, and the atmosphere was infectious. We chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the history and culture of Matera. It was a fun and relaxing way to end the day.
For dinner, we had reservations at La Nicchia nel Sasso Osteria Contemporanea. This restaurant is located in a cave, and its ambiance is both intimate and unique. The chef, Vito Carbone, is known for his innovative takes on traditional Lucanian dishes, using only the freshest, local ingredients. I started with the fave e cicoria, a traditional Materan dish of fava bean puree and chicory. It was simple but delicious, the earthy flavors of the beans perfectly complementing the bitterness of the chicory. For my main course, I ordered the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity.
The service at La Nicchia nel Sasso was exceptional. The staff were knowledgeable and passionate about the food, and they took the time to explain each dish in detail. The wine list was extensive, featuring a selection of local and regional wines. I opted for a glass of Aglianico, a full-bodied red wine that paired perfectly with my lamb. The entire experience was a culinary delight, a fitting end to a day of exploring Matera's soul.
As I walked back to the Sant Angelo Matera, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day I had experienced. Matera had exceeded all of my expectations, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and cuisine. I felt a deep connection to this ancient city, a sense of awe at its resilience and beauty. I am excited for what tomorrow holds, with plans to visit the Cattedrale di Maria Santissima della Bruna e Sant'Eustachio and the MUdeSCA - Museo dello Scavo Matera. I am also looking forward to visiting Sassi in Miniatura, as I would like to purchase a few gifts for Isabella and Sofia.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy that rain jacket I forgot to pack. September can be unpredictable, and I want to be prepared for any weather. For now, though, I am content to bask in the memories of this incredible day, grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem of Italy. I am also glad I got to share these experiences with my friends. Traveling with others makes the journey that much more memorable.
