Exploring the Wilderness of Kangaroo Island: A Solo Adventure

Today was a day of contrasts, from the rugged, historical allure of Cape Borda Lighthouse to the serene, inviting waters of Vivonne Bay. Kangaroo Island continues to surprise me with its diverse landscapes and the stories etched into its very soil. It's a reminder that even when traveling solo, every corner holds a new discovery waiting to be made.

My day began with an early breakfast at Beach Barista. I fueled up with a strong coffee and a light pastry, the perfect start to a day of exploration. The cafe had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed watching the locals start their day.

The drive to Cape Borda Lighthouse was an adventure in itself. The landscape shifted dramatically, from rolling hills to dense bushland. As I approached the coast, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of the ocean. The lighthouse, a stoic square structure, stood proudly against the backdrop of the vast Investigator Strait.

Cape Borda Lighthouse, built in 1858, is not only the third oldest remaining lighthouse in South Australia but also the only square stone lighthouse in the region. I learned that it was originally known as the Flinders Light and played a crucial role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the Roaring Forties trade route. The history of this place is palpable, and I could almost hear the echoes of the past as I walked around the grounds. The fact that all supplies had to be hauled up from ships via a steep steel railway at Harvey's Return highlights the isolation and hardship endured by the early lightkeepers.

I joined a self-guided tour and explored the lighthouse and its surrounding settlement. The views from the top were breathtaking, with the coastline stretching out in both directions. I could see why this location was chosen; it offers an unparalleled vantage point for spotting ships entering the strait. I also learned about the cannon that was installed to signal ships during foggy conditions, a relic from a time before modern communication.

After soaking in the history and the views, I made my way to the Vivonne Bay Rock Pool. This natural wonder is located a short walk from the main beach area and is renowned for its crystal-clear waters. The drive there was scenic, with glimpses of the coastline peeking through the trees. Upon arrival, I parked near the jetty and followed the path towards the coastline.

The rock pool was even more stunning than the photos I had seen. The water was incredibly clear, and the surrounding cliffs and greenery created a picturesque setting. It was easy to see why this spot is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. I took a refreshing dip in the cool water, enjoying the tranquility and the natural beauty of the place. The calm waters are perfect for families, offering a safe environment for both children and adults. I spent a good hour exploring the rock formations and simply relaxing on the sandy shores.

For lunch, I stopped by the Seadragon Cafe in Penneshaw. This cafe is conveniently located in the SeaLink ferry terminal, making it a great spot to grab a bite while enjoying views of Hog Bay. I ordered a seafood platter, eager to taste the local flavors. The cafe had a relaxed vibe, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore Kingscote, the largest town on Kangaroo Island. I was looking for a place to unwind and enjoy a drink, and Zone Restaurant & Bar caught my eye. Located in the Chapman Building of the Ozone Hotel, this restaurant and bar offers stunning views over Nepean Bay. I settled in with a glass of local wine and savored the beautiful coastal scenery. The atmosphere was lively yet relaxed, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers.

As evening approached, I headed to American River for dinner at Samphire Restaurant. This dining destination is known for its elegant seven-course degustation menu, showcasing the best of local Kangaroo Island produce. The restaurant's focus on using firewood, fire, charcoal, and smoke to enhance the flavors of the ingredients intrigued me.

The meal was an exquisite culinary journey. Each course was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, highlighting the unique flavors of the island. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the meats were cooked to perfection. The wine pairing was also exceptional, with each glass complementing the flavors of the dish. The service was impeccable, and the staff were knowledgeable and passionate about the food they were serving. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and I left feeling satisfied and impressed.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery and the Emu Bay Lavender Farm. I'm looking forward to learning about the island's unique industries and experiencing more of its natural beauty. Perhaps I'll find a portable phone charger, something I regrettably forgot to pack. And who knows, maybe I'll even try my hand at sheep shearing !

As I reflect on today, I am grateful for the opportunity to explore Kangaroo Island's diverse landscapes and rich history. From the rugged coastline to the tranquil rock pools and the exquisite dining experiences, this island has something to offer every traveler. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue my solo adventure in this beautiful part of the world.
