Island Wildlife and Sandy Heights

Today was a sensory explosion, a perfect encapsulation of why I chose Kangaroo Island for this solo adventure. It was a day filled with unique animal encounters, thrilling landscapes, and a taste of the island’s artistic soul. I started the day with a hearty breakfast, ready to make the most of every moment.

My day began at The Rockpool Cafe in Stokes Bay. The cafe, located near one of Kangaroo Island's most talked about beaches, had a cozy atmosphere. I ordered a flat white and a breakfast wrap, savoring each bite as I planned the day ahead.

Fueled up and ready, my first stop was the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park. As someone who usually travels with Sofia, I found myself missing her excitement, but the animals quickly filled that void. The park is home to over 150 native Australian species. I purchased a bag of kangaroo feed at the entrance and was immediately swarmed by friendly kangaroos and wallabies. It was such a treat to have them gently nibbling from my hand. I even spotted a couple of albino kangaroos, which I learned are more common in captivity.

I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the park, mesmerized by the diversity of creatures. The koalas were adorable, lazily munching on eucalyptus leaves. The dingoes, while not as cuddly, were fascinating to observe. I even had the chance to hold a snake, which was surprisingly warm and smooth. It reminded me of the time Sofia brought a frog home from school. Isabella was not impressed. As I watched a keeper give a talk about the park's rescued and rehabilitated animals, I was impressed by their work, especially given the devastation caused by the 2020 bushfires.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Leaving the Wildlife Park, I headed to my next adventure: Little Sahara. This sprawling landscape of sand dunes is a stark contrast to the island’s lush forests, offering a different kind of thrill. I rented a sandboard and, after a bit of a struggle to climb the towering dunes, I was ready to carve my way down. The sand was soft beneath my feet, and the wind whipped through my hair as I sped down the slope. It was exhilarating, a bit like skiing but without the cold. I even saw a few people tackling the dunes on fat bikes, which looked like a lot of fun.

After working up an appetite on the dunes, I drove to American River for lunch at Glossy Black. This restaurant is known for its focus on local Kangaroo Island produce, and the rustic ambiance was immediately appealing. I decided on the seafood platter, a generous assortment of fresh oysters, prawns, and fish. Everything was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to refuel after my sandy escapades.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I decided to explore some of Kangaroo Island’s artistic offerings. I headed to Fine Art Kangaroo Island in Kingscote. This charming gallery showcases the work of local artists, with a variety of art forms including painting, photography, jewelry, and woodcraft. I was particularly drawn to a sea dragon sculpture, an intricate piece that captured the essence of the island's marine life. I chatted with Fleur, the owner, who shared stories about the artists and their inspirations. I ended up purchasing a small print of a local landscape, a memento of my time here.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Penneshaw for dinner at the Penneshaw Pub. This historic pub offers stunning ocean views, and I snagged a table on the cliff-top. I ordered a classic pub meal – a perfectly cooked steak with a side of chips – and a pint of local beer. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was a great way to soak in the island's community spirit.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the western side of the island, visiting Cape Borda Lighthouse and Vivonne Bay Rock Pool. I'm looking forward to more breathtaking scenery and perhaps another swim in the ocean. For breakfast, I intend to visit Beach Barista before heading out to explore Cape Borda Lighthouse and Vivonne Bay Rock Pool. Before calling it a night, I might check out Zone Restaurant & Bar for a relaxing drink.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Kangaroo Island has a way of captivating you with its diverse landscapes and unique wildlife. It's a place where you can feel truly connected to nature, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. As I drifted off to sleep, I was already anticipating the adventures that tomorrow would bring.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Today was a reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place: to reconnect with myself and discover the beauty of the world around me. Kangaroo Island is certainly delivering on that promise, one furry friend and sandy escapade at a time.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore the rugged beauty of Cape Borda Lighthouse and relax by the serene Vivonne Bay Rock Pool. I might even treat myself to a sunset drink at Zone Restaurant & Bar. Until then, goodnight from Kangaroo Island!
