My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rabbit Warren Bakery in Kingscote. I fueled up with a delicious pastry and coffee, ready for the day’s adventures. The bakery had a comforting, local vibe, and it was clear that it's a favorite among the locals. After breakfast, I set off for Raptor Domain, eager to witness their renowned birds of prey show.
The drive to Raptor Domain was scenic, with rolling hills and glimpses of the coastline. Arriving at Raptor Domain, I was immediately struck by the dedication to conservation and education. The staff's passion for these magnificent birds was evident from the start. The bird of prey show was nothing short of spectacular. I watched in awe as wedge-tailed eagles, black kites, and barn owls soared through the air, demonstrating their natural behaviors. The trainers shared fascinating insights into the lives of these birds, highlighting their importance in the ecosystem. It was both educational and exhilarating, a perfect blend of entertainment and conservation.
The beauty of Kangaroo Island lies not just in its landscapes, but in the intricate web of life it supports.
One of the highlights was the chance to hold a majestic wedge-tailed eagle. The sheer power and grace of the bird were palpable, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. It was amazing to see the close bond between the trainers and their birds, a testament to their dedication and care. Before leaving, I grabbed a quick snack at Kestrel's Rest, the Raptor Domain's cafe, and enjoyed watching some of the bird training in the background.
After an exhilarating morning with the birds of prey, I drove to Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, eager to see koalas in their natural habitat. Stopping for lunch at Dragons Rest, I enjoyed a satisfying meal before continuing my journey. The drive itself was beautiful, with the landscape changing from open fields to dense forests.

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for native Australian wildlife. As I entered the sanctuary, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The air was fresh, and the sounds of nature filled the air. I embarked on a guided koala walk, hoping to spot these iconic marsupials. It didn't take long before I saw my first koala, nestled high in a eucalyptus tree.
The guide shared fascinating information about the koalas and their habitat, explaining how they have adapted to the Australian environment. I learned about the impact of the 2020 bushfires on the sanctuary and the incredible resilience of the wildlife. It was inspiring to see how the sanctuary is recovering and continuing to provide a safe haven for these animals.
As I continued my walk, I encountered kangaroos and wallabies grazing peacefully in the grasslands. It was a truly magical experience to witness these animals in their natural environment, without the barriers of a zoo. The sanctuary's commitment to conservation is evident, and it’s heartening to see the efforts being made to protect the island’s unique biodiversity.
Before heading back to Kingscote, I decided to indulge in a wine tasting experience. I made my way to The Islander Estate Vineyards - Kangaroo Island Wines. The vineyard exuded a rustic charm, with its rolling hills and picturesque setting. I sampled a selection of their finest wines, each with its unique character and flavor. The staff were knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights into the winemaking process and the region’s terroir. Sipping on a glass of Shiraz, I savored the moment, appreciating the beauty of the surroundings and the flavors of Kangaroo Island.
