A Day of Bamboo and Bliss
Today's journey through Arashiyama was nothing short of magical. From the towering bamboo stalks creating an ethereal atmosphere to the peaceful temples and delightful local cuisine, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Kyoto. I am eager to share every moment of this adventure, as I reflect on the beauty and serenity that enveloped us.
Our adventure began early, with breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. Sophie had read some great reviews, and I was curious to experience it. It was a good start to the day. We fueled up for a day of exploration with a traditional Japanese breakfast, setting the tone for a day immersed in local culture. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff were very welcoming. The food was tasty and exactly what we needed before a busy day of exploring.
Next, we hopped on a train to Arashiyama. The train ride itself was an experience, offering glimpses of the Japanese countryside. As we approached Arashiyama, the scenery transformed, with lush greenery and the feeling of entering a different world. As a restoration technician, I appreciate the blend of natural beauty and human touch in creating such a serene environment.
Our first stop was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Walking into the grove was like stepping into another world. Towering bamboo stalks soared into the sky, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. The air was fresh and crisp, filled with the gentle rustling of bamboo leaves swaying in the breeze. It was an immersive experience, a symphony of nature that calmed the senses. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and tranquility amidst this natural wonder. Mateo was amazed by the height of the bamboo, constantly looking up and exclaiming how tall they were. Sophie, ever the photographer, was snapping away, trying to capture the essence of the forest. I must admit, even I, with my trusty camera, was trying to capture the perfect shot, but some things are just too grand to fit into a frame.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After the Bamboo Forest, we made our way to Tenryu-ji Temple, a short walk away. This temple is one of Kyoto's five great Zen temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Founded in 1339, the temple boasts stunning gardens designed by Muso Soseki, a renowned garden designer. The gardens feature a central pond surrounded by rocks, pine trees, and the backdrop of the Arashiyama mountains. The design seamlessly blends the natural landscape with the carefully crafted gardens, creating a harmonious and peaceful environment. I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate details of the rock arrangements, a testament to the artistry and thoughtfulness of the design. As someone who works with historical buildings, I couldn't help but appreciate the preservation of such a significant cultural site. Mateo, surprisingly, was quite interested in the koi fish in the pond, spending a good amount of time watching them swim around. Sophie enjoyed the serene atmosphere, taking a moment to sit and meditate by the pond.

For lunch, we ventured to Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha. I had heard about this place from a fellow traveler, and I was eager to try their Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a cozy atmosphere. We were lucky to get a table, as it seemed to be a popular spot. The chef prepared the okonomiyaki right in front of us, showcasing the skill and care that went into each dish. The okonomiyaki itself was a savory pancake filled with layers of noodles, cabbage, and various toppings, all cooked on a teppan grill. It was a delightful culinary experience, a symphony of flavors and textures that left me wanting more. Mateo, who can be a picky eater, surprisingly enjoyed the okonomiyaki, devouring his portion with gusto. Sophie appreciated the unique flavors and the interactive cooking experience.

After lunch, we strolled through the charming streets of Arashiyama, browsing the local shops. We stumbled upon Maiko Antiques Kyoto, a store filled with strange, rare, and old objects. As someone who appreciates history, I was immediately drawn to the vintage items and unique collectibles. The shop was dimly lit, with every available surface covered in vintage cameras, dolls, and other curiosities. It was like stepping into a time capsule, each item telling a story of the past. I ended up buying a small vintage camera, a memento of our visit to Arashiyama. Mateo was fascinated by the old toys, while Sophie enjoyed looking at the vintage jewelry.

As the day drew to a close, we had dinner at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. This restaurant is known for its teppanyaki dishes and lively atmosphere. It's run by a friendly couple, Hideki and Naoko, who make the dining experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant has a casual, welcoming vibe, and it's popular among both locals and tourists. We ordered a variety of teppanyaki dishes, including grilled meats, seafood, and vegetables, all cooked on a large iron griddle. The food was delicious, and the presentation was artful. The chefs were skilled and entertaining, adding to the overall dining experience. I particularly enjoyed the wagyu steak, which was cooked to perfection. Mateo loved the fried rice, while Sophie enjoyed the seafood dishes. I think it is fair to say that it was a great way to end our day in Arashiyama. It's funny, because Montreal has an amazing food scene, and yet I find myself across the world having some of the best meals of my life.

As we headed back to our hotel, SHIZUTETSU HOTEL PREZIO Kyoto Karasumaoike, I reflected on the day's adventures. Arashiyama had exceeded all expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights. It was a day that I will cherish for a long time. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Pontocho, and perhaps end the day with a drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto. I am excited to see what new adventures await us in this beautiful city. I'm also hoping to find some sunscreen, as I seem to have forgotten it. I am starting to feel the effects of the sun.
