Echoes of the Incas in Cusco

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Cusco, a city that resonates with the echoes of the Inca civilization and the vibrant energy of modern Peru. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and savoring the unique flavors of this historic city. I was excited to share this experience with Sophie and Mateo, hoping to instill in them the same appreciation for history and culture that my grandfather instilled in me.

We started our day with breakfast at Ceviche Seafood Kitchen. I know, seafood for breakfast might sound unusual, but I had read so many good things about this place. It was a bright, modern restaurant just off the Plaza de Armas. I decided to try their signature ceviche, while Sophie opted for something a bit less adventurous. Mateo, of course, wanted the *arroz con mariscos*. It was a delicious way to start our day, fueling us up for the adventures ahead.

The stones whisper stories of a civilization that shaped these lands, a legacy etched in every corner of Cusco.

Our first stop was Plaza Regocijo, just a block from the main square. I explained to Mateo that this plaza, known as Kusipata in Quechua, was once a place of Inca celebrations. Now, it is a beautifully maintained public square with a fountain and colonial buildings. It's amazing to think that this place, now so peaceful, has been a gathering place for centuries, witnessing everything from Inca ceremonies to the start of Hiram Bingham's expedition that discovered Machu Picchu! We spent some time there, soaking in the atmosphere and imagining what it must have been like in its heyday.

Next, we visited the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, housed in the Casa Garcilaso de la Vega. This was particularly meaningful for me, as Garcilaso de la Vega was a chronicler of Inca and Spanish heritage, much like myself, trying to bridge two worlds. The museum itself is a treasure trove, with artifacts from pre-Inca times to the colonial era. Mateo was fascinated by the dinosaur exhibit, while Sophie was drawn to the colonial art. I was personally captivated by the exhibits on the Wari culture and the Cusco School of Art. It’s incredible to see how the history of Cusco is presented in a didactic way, from prehistoric times to the development of religious-themed arts during the colonial era. The museum also features colonial canvases made by the Cusco school of art and works by the Mendivil family, known for the elongated necks in their works.

After the museum, we walked to the famous Twelve Angled Stone. It's set in a wall on Hatunrumiyoc Street, and it's an incredible example of Inca stonework. I tried to explain to Mateo how the Incas built these structures without mortar, fitting the stones together so perfectly that not even a piece of paper could fit between them. He was impressed, but I think he was more interested in the street vendors selling souvenirs! It’s believed the stone represents the division of the 24 families of Cusco, 12 during the Hurin dynasty and 12 during the Hanan dynasty. It was originally part of the Inca palace called Palacio Inca Roca, and it became the Archbishop's palace in the early 20th century. It's amazing to think that this stone has been in place for over 700 years, a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the Inca people.

We then stopped by La Galeria Cusco, where Sophie bought a few alpaca sweaters as gifts for our relatives back in Montreal. I was also tempted to buy a *quena*, but I resisted, knowing I already have too many instruments gathering dust at home. This shop is known for its pastel-painted ceramic Pucara Bulls, which are an important symbol in Andean culture. I even considered getting one for our garden back in Montreal, a little piece of Peru to remind us of our trip. I’m always looking for a special piece to bring home, something that will spark conversation and bring back memories of our travels.

For lunch, we went to Chull's - Peruvian Cuisine & Craft Beer. I was in the mood for something hearty, so I ordered the *aji de gallina*, a creamy chicken stew. Sophie had the trout ceviche, and Mateo devoured a *lomo saltado*. We also tried some local craft beer, which was surprisingly good. The restaurant had a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and the staff was very friendly.

In the evening, we had dinner at La Quimera. The restaurant is located inside a farmhouse near the stone of the 12 angles. We had to wait a bit for our food, but the attentive service made it worth it. The waiter even offered complimentary pisco sours while we waited. The menu included anticuchos, BBQ wings, salchipapa, local pizza, and a vegetarian hamburger made with special Peruvian beans. I opted for a local pizza, which was delicious and a nice change of pace from the traditional Peruvian food we had been eating. Sophie had a vegetarian hamburger, and Mateo, predictably, ordered pizza again! I enjoyed the fusion dining experience, offering pizzas and innovative cocktails amidst the vibrant local culture.

As we walked back to the Jose Antonio Cusco Hotel, I reflected on the day. We had explored ancient sites, learned about Inca history, and savored the flavors of Cusco. But more importantly, we had shared these experiences as a family, creating memories that we would cherish for years to come. I am so glad that I decided to bring my family to Cusco to reconnect with my Peruvian roots. I hope that Mateo will grow up with a strong sense of his heritage and a deep appreciation for the history and culture of Peru.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Huayna Picchu. I’m a little nervous about the hike, but I know the views will be worth it. Mateo is excited, but Sophie is a bit apprehensive. I promised her we would take it slow and steady. After the hike, we plan to have lunch at Mistura Grill Cusco and dinner at Marcelo Batata Restaurante. And perhaps we'll end the day with a drink at the Rock House Cafe. It's going to be another day of adventure, and I can't wait to see what it holds!

Today, January 18, Cusco is filled with a vibrant energy. While I didn't come across any specific local events today, the city itself is a living celebration of its rich heritage. The blend of ancient Inca history and colonial influences creates a unique atmosphere that is both captivating and inspiring. The spirit of Cusco is alive in its people, its architecture, and its cuisine, making every day here a special occasion. I feel grateful to be sharing this experience with my family, immersing ourselves in the traditions and culture of this incredible city.
