A Day Among Giants

Today, our family journey through the Sacred Valley took us to breathtaking heights, both literally and figuratively. We immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of Incan history, wandering through ancient ruins that whispered tales of a civilization long past. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and connection, not just with the past, but with each other.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mamá Jama Restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was just what we needed to fuel our adventures. I ordered some traditional Peruvian dishes, while Sophie and Mateo went with some familiar breakfast items. With satisfied bellies, we set off to explore the Sacred Valley. The plan was to spend the day exploring the Sacred Valley, with a special focus on the Ollantaytambo Sanctuary. The January weather in the Sacred Valley is mild, with temperatures ranging from 14°C (57°F) to 23°C (73°F), but it is also the rainy season, so we packed our rain gear just in case. Despite the occasional showers, the valley was lush and green, making for a stunning backdrop to our historical explorations. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Andes. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride, knowing that my ancestors had walked these very paths. It's moments like these that make me feel deeply connected to my Peruvian heritage.

Our first stop was the magnificent Ollantaytambo Sanctuary. As we approached, the sheer scale of the site was awe-inspiring. The massive stone terraces, rising dramatically against the mountain backdrop, spoke volumes of the Incas' engineering prowess. I could only imagine what it must have been like to witness the Incas successfully defend the site against the Spanish cavalry in 1537. We decided to hire a local guide to help us navigate the sanctuary and provide insights into its history and significance. He explained that Ollantaytambo was more than just a fortress; it was a vital agricultural center and a place of great spiritual importance. The guide shared stories of Inca emperors and their connection to the land. As a restoration technician specializing in historical buildings, I was particularly fascinated by the intricate stonework and the precision with which the stones were fitted together. It was clear that the Incas possessed a deep understanding of architecture and engineering.

The stones of Ollantaytambo whisper tales of a civilization that harmonized with nature, leaving behind a legacy of ingenuity and resilience.

Mateo was particularly fascinated by the Intihuatana, the famous Inca astronomical calendar, or sundial, carved rock known as the place where the sun is tied. The guide explained how the Incas used it to track the seasons and plan their agricultural activities. Sophie, ever the librarian, was engrossed in the historical accounts of the site, poring over every detail and asking insightful questions. It made me so happy to see my family engaging with our culture and history. I found myself explaining to Mateo about how Ollantaytambo originates from the Aymara term Ulla Tawi, meaning high observation place, which the Quechua then adapted as Ollantay or Ullantay Tampu, pronounced as Tambo.

After spending several hours exploring Ollantaytambo, we were ready for a late lunch. Our guide recommended the Andean Grill Restaurant, known for its traditional Andean cuisine. We feasted on local specialties, including alpaca steak and trout ceviche. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was exquisite. It was a culinary journey that complemented our historical exploration perfectly. Mateo even tried a bit of alpaca, declaring it surprisingly delicious. I was so proud of him for trying new things and embracing our culture.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Cusco, but not before making a quick stop at Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits. I wanted to sample some local spirits and wind down after a long day of exploring. The bar was cozy and inviting, with an extensive menu of craft cocktails. I opted for a pisco sour, while Sophie tried a local herbal concoction. Mateo enjoyed a refreshing fruit juice. It was the perfect way to end our day in the Sacred Valley.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how important it is for Mateo to connect with his Peruvian heritage. As a first-generation Canadian, he doesn't always have the opportunity to experience our culture firsthand. This trip to Cusco is not just a vacation; it's a chance for him to understand where he comes from and to appreciate the richness of our history and traditions. I hope that these experiences will instill in him a sense of pride and belonging, and that he will carry these memories with him throughout his life.

Before heading back to the hotel, I made sure to check the plans for tomorrow. We'll be visiting Plaza Regocijo, the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, and the Twelve Angled Stone. I'm also planning to stop by La Galeria Cusco to pick up some souvenirs for friends and family back in Montreal. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue sharing our journey with you all.

For dinner, we decided to try Limo, a restaurant known for its Nikkei cuisine, a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavors. The restaurant was located right on the Plaza de Armas, offering stunning views of the city. The ambiance was elegant and sophisticated, and the service was impeccable. We started with some creative sushi rolls, followed by a tenderloin steak and seared tuna with miso sauce for our main courses. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was artistic. I particularly enjoyed the pisco-based cocktails, which were both refreshing and potent. Limo was a culinary highlight of our trip, offering a unique and memorable dining experience.

As we walked back to the Jose Antonio Cusco Hotel, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to share my heritage with my family. It was a day filled with history, culture, and delicious food, but most importantly, it was a day of connection and love. And I look forward to continuing our journey of discovery tomorrow.
