Journey to the Mythical Mount Olympus
Day 11: Farewell to Olympus: A Final Day of Discovery and Delight
Join Juan and Sophie's last day on Mount Olympus, exploring Litochoro's hidden gems and savoring delightful Greek cuisine. A memorable end!
Adieu, Olympus!
As our journey to the mythical Mount Olympus draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve shared. Today, Sophie and I embraced our final day with open hearts, eager to soak in the last moments of this Grecian adventure. The crisp December air, a stark contrast to Montreal's winter chill, invigorated us as we set out to explore the charming town of Litochoro and its surrounding natural beauty.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Olympus Bakery & Pastry Χατζηγιάννης. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries filled the air, tempting us with a variety of local delicacies. I opted for a traditional Greek pastry filled with spinach and feta, while Sophie chose a sweet honey cake. The perfect start to a day of exploration!

Fueled by our delicious breakfast, we ventured towards Lakkos Litochoro. The area was serene, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling town center. We strolled along the paths, admiring the natural beauty and the quiet solitude. The crisp air and the rustling of leaves created a calming atmosphere, a perfect way to connect with nature before our departure.

Next on our itinerary was Κόψη γομαρόσταλου, a challenging but rewarding hiking route. Though I'm no stranger to mountain trails, this particular path was especially steep and demanding, ultimately leading to a large and precipitous rocky outcropping. The route is secured with a wire rope attached to sturdy posts, and numerous metal steps facilitate progress. Given the winter conditions and the advanced hour, we decided to admire it from afar, promising ourselves to return in fairer weather to properly tackle it.

The journey may end, but the memories and lessons learned will last a lifetime.
For lunch, we decided to try Sunday's. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing midday meal. I chose the ribeye, cooked to perfection, while Sophie enjoyed a pizza salad. We washed it all down with glasses of local wine, savoring the flavors of Greece one last time. The service was attentive, and the prices were reasonable, making it a delightful dining experience.

As the sun began to set, we sought out Oliver's Pub for a relaxing drink. The pub had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I ordered a local beer, while Sophie chose a glass of wine. We chatted with some of the locals, sharing stories and laughter, feeling a sense of camaraderie and connection.

For our final dinner in Litochoro, we chose Zorbas Tavern. The restaurant was known for its traditional Greek dishes and friendly atmosphere. I ordered moussaka, a classic Greek casserole of eggplant, minced meat, potatoes, and béchamel sauce, while Sophie opted for souvlaki, grilled meat skewers served with pita bread and tzatziki sauce. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent, a perfect end to our culinary journey in Greece.

As we savored our final meal, Sophie and I reminisced about our time on Mount Olympus. We spoke of the breathtaking landscapes, the rich history, and the warm hospitality of the Greek people. We felt grateful for the opportunity to have shared this experience together, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Even the little mishaps, like forgetting the portable charger and raincoat, added to the adventure, reminding us to be adaptable and resourceful.
Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Montreal, carrying with us the spirit of Olympus and the warmth of Greek hospitality. While I look forward to seeing Mateo again and sharing stories of our adventure, a part of me will always remain on the slopes of this mythical mountain. This trip has deepened my appreciation for cultural preservation and the importance of connecting with history, values I hope to instill in my son. As a restoration technician, I am constantly reminded of the importance of preserving the past for future generations, and this trip has only reinforced that belief. Until next time, Olympus!
The weather in Litochoro in December is cool, with average temperatures ranging from 3.9°C (39°F) to 10.4°C (50.7°F). Snowfall is possible, with an average of 0.8 days of snow in December. The days are short, with an average of 9 hours and 24 minutes of daylight. It's essential to pack warm clothing and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
As I reflect on our journey, I am reminded of the words of Nikos Kazantzakis:
In order to see clearly, perhaps it is advisable to look at the heavens, to look at the sky, to look at the stars.
This trip to Mount Olympus has been more than just a vacation; it has been a journey of self-discovery, a celebration of history and culture, and a testament to the enduring power of love and companionship. Sophie and I have created memories that we will cherish forever, and I am excited to share these stories with Mateo and inspire him to explore the world with open eyes and a curious heart. Though our adventure here is ending, the spirit of Olympus will forever live within us.
And so, with a final glance at the majestic Mount Olympus, we bid adieu to this enchanting land, our hearts full of gratitude and our minds brimming with unforgettable memories. Until we meet again, Greece, farewell!
