Journey to the Mythical Mount Olympus
Day 10: Conquering Olympus: A Day of Mythical Heights and Hearty Refueling
Join Juan and Sophie as they ascend Mount Olympus, explore Pápá Ráchi, and savor Greek flavors at Flisvos FC, Taverna Olympos, and Stavros Refuge.
Reaching for the Gods
Today was the day Sophie and I had been anticipating since we first hatched this plan to visit Mount Olympus. It was a day of pushing our limits, both physically and mentally, as we aimed to experience the mountain in all its glory. From scaling its heights to savoring the local flavors, every moment was etched with the spirit of adventure.
Explore the legendary Mount Olympus, home of the Greek gods, offering challenging hikes and breathtaking views of Greece's highest peak.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Flisvos FC. It wasn't exactly the traditional Greek fare I was expecting, but the familiar comfort of a simple breakfast fueled us up for the challenges ahead. I must admit, I did miss my usual Peruvian coffee, but the anticipation of the day overshadowed any longing for home. The air was crisp, carrying the promise of a day filled with awe-inspiring vistas and challenging climbs.
Our main objective for the day was to ascend as far up Mount Olympus as the December weather would allow. The mountain, draped in its winter coat, presented a starkly beautiful landscape. As a restoration technician, I'm used to working with stone, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer scale and majesty of Olympus. Sophie, with her librarian's eye for detail, was captivated by the unique flora clinging to the slopes, even in the face of the approaching winter.
We made our way up to Pápá Ráchi, a spot that offered panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The crisp mountain air filled our lungs, and the silence was broken only by the occasional call of a bird overhead. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling city life we had left behind in Montreal. I felt a sense of connection to the mountain, a feeling I hadn't experienced since my childhood days in Huancavelica.

The mountain doesn't judge; it simply presents a challenge, an opportunity to discover what you're truly capable of.
For lunch, we descended slightly to Taverna Olympos, a charming eatery that offered a taste of authentic Greek cuisine. The warm, rustic ambiance was a welcome respite from the biting wind outside. We savored traditional dishes, each bite a burst of flavors that spoke of the region's rich culinary heritage. Sophie, ever the adventurous foodie, tried a local delicacy that I cautiously avoided, sticking to something a bit more familiar. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals my Abuela used to make back in Peru.

After lunch, we decided to visit 55κορυφές, a shop in Litochoro specializing in outdoor gear. I needed to replace a glove I had torn earlier in the day, and Sophie was keen to pick up a map of the area. The shop owner was a wealth of knowledge, offering tips and advice on the best routes and trails. It was reassuring to know that there were people who were so passionate about the mountain and its preservation.

As the sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the landscape, we made our way to the Stavros Refuge - Shelter D for dinner. The refuge, nestled at the eastern gates of Mount Olympus, offered a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was named after Dimitrios Boundolas, a local mountaineer who was lost in the Himalayas. The hearty meal was exactly what we needed after a day of hiking, and the camaraderie among the other guests was infectious. We shared stories and laughter, forging connections with people from all walks of life.

The refuge was cozy and welcoming, a stark contrast to the harsh conditions outside. It was named after Dimitrios Boundolas, a renowned Greek alpinist, which added a layer of somber respect to the place. We enjoyed a hearty dinner, the kind that warms you from the inside out, as the wind howled outside. The refuge is open most days of the year, except for Mondays during winter.
As I sat there, sipping on a glass of local wine, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's events. We had conquered a mountain, not just in the physical sense, but also in terms of pushing our own boundaries. The experience had brought Sophie and me closer, forging a bond that only shared adventures can create. It was a day I would cherish for the rest of my life.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lakkos Litochoro and Κόψη γομαρόσταλου, two more gems in the Mount Olympus region. We'll start our day with breakfast at Olympus Bakery & Pastry Χατζηγιάννης, followed by lunch at Sunday's and dinner at Zorbas Tavern. And, if we have time, we might even pop into Oliver's Pub for a nightcap. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I'm content to bask in the afterglow of today's accomplishments.
As we prepare to leave Mount Olympus tomorrow, a part of me will remain here, etched into the very fabric of this mythical landscape. The memories we've created, the challenges we've overcome, and the bonds we've strengthened will stay with us long after we've returned to our everyday lives in Montreal. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it's been a pilgrimage to the heart of Greek mythology and a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
Reflecting on our time here, I realize that Mount Olympus is more than just a mountain; it's a symbol of perseverance, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness. It's a place where the gods of old still whisper through the wind, inspiring us to reach for our own mythical heights. And as we descend from these hallowed slopes, we carry with us a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the world around us.
Our journey back will be filled with the echoes of laughter, the taste of local delicacies, and the breathtaking vistas that have become ingrained in our memories. We'll share stories with Mateo, our son, painting vivid pictures of the landscapes we've traversed and the people we've met along the way. And perhaps, one day, we'll return to Mount Olympus, to once again stand in the presence of the gods and embrace the challenges that await us.
The journey back to Montreal will be long, but our hearts will be full. We'll carry with us the spirit of Mount Olympus, a reminder that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with perseverance, courage, and a little bit of faith. And as we settle back into our routine, we'll cherish the memories we've created and eagerly anticipate our next adventure, wherever it may lead us.
As I close this chapter of our adventure, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced the magic of Mount Olympus. It's a place that has captured my heart and soul, and I know that I'll carry its spirit with me wherever I go. Until next time, farewell from the land of the gods. Safe travels, everyone!
Before concluding, I would like to share a little bit about the weather conditions we experienced today. The temperature varied, with the higher altitudes being significantly colder, around -10 °C to 10 °C. The wind was almost a constant companion, which is typical for this area. We also noticed that the coastal northeast slopes received more rain than the continental northwest, leading to differences in vegetation. Overall, it was a challenging yet rewarding day, and we look forward to sharing more adventures with you all soon. Remember to always check the weather forecast before embarking on any hikes and pack accordingly. Until next time, happy trails!
As we conclude our day, I am reminded of a quote from Nikos Kazantzakis: Though she is but small, the Earth inspires me, not because of her size, but because of her ancientness.
Thank you for joining us on this adventure, and we look forward to sharing more stories with you soon. Goodnight!
