Leh Beckons: A Promising Start to My Solo Journey

As I settle into Leh, the crisp mountain air and the unique blend of culture and history have already begun to captivate me. My eagerness to explore this region is palpable, and I anticipate the coming days with a sense of adventure and discovery. It's a world away from Montreal, but the warmth of the people is already making me feel at home.

The flight into Leh was nothing short of breathtaking. As the plane descended, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of rugged mountains, stark desert, and winding rivers. It was a view that reminded me of the Andes, yet distinctly different, with a raw, untamed beauty. Arriving at the airport, the high altitude hit me immediately. Even a simple walk felt more strenuous than usual, a stark reminder that I was now well over 10,000 feet above sea level. I made a mental note to take it easy on my first day, allowing my body to acclimatize to the thin air. I hadn't forgotten my sunscreen, thankfully, remembering how harsh the sun can be at these altitudes, a mistake I won't repeat [i].

My first order of business was to find a guesthouse. I hadn't booked anything in advance, preferring to keep my itinerary flexible. After a bit of searching around the Leh Main Market, I found a cozy little place run by a local family. The room was simple but clean, with a window overlooking the bustling market street. It felt authentic, a far cry from the sterile environment of a hotel. After settling in, I decided to venture out and explore the city. The Leh Main Market was a riot of colors and sounds. Stalls overflowed with handwoven woolen clothes, intricate jewelry, and an array of spices and dried fruits. I couldn't resist buying a warm Pashmina shawl, a practical souvenir to ward off the evening chill. I also picked up a small bag of dried apricots, a local delicacy that I remember Mateo enjoying back home whenever we find them in Montreal's Jean-Talon Market.

Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

My first major stop was the Leh Palace. Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, the palace dominates the skyline with its imposing structure. Built in the 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal, it reminded me of a miniature Potala Palace in Lhasa. The climb up to the palace was a bit of a challenge in the thin air, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. From there, I could see the entire city of Leh spread out before me, a mosaic of white-washed buildings nestled amidst the rugged mountains. Inside the palace, I explored the various rooms and chambers, imagining what life must have been like for the royal family centuries ago. The palace is now a museum, housing a collection of artifacts, paintings, and royal ornaments. It was fascinating to see the intricate details of the traditional Ladakhi craftsmanship, a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage.

After soaking in the history and the views at Leh Palace, I made my way to the Shanti Stupa. This white-domed Buddhist monument sits on another hilltop, offering yet another stunning perspective of Leh and the surrounding landscape. The stupa was built in 1991 by a Japanese Buddhist monk, as part of a mission to promote world peace. As I walked around the stupa, I admired the intricate Buddhist murals and the golden Buddha statue inside. The atmosphere was serene and peaceful, a perfect place for quiet reflection. I watched as the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the mountains. It was a truly magical moment, one that I will cherish for a long time.

For breakfast, I decided to try the Penguin Garden Restaurant. The restaurant had a lovely garden setting, with apricot and apple trees providing shade. I ordered a simple Tibetan breakfast of tsampa (roasted barley flour) and butter tea. The tsampa was hearty and filling, while the butter tea was surprisingly delicious, a salty and savory concoction that warmed me from the inside out. It was a far cry from my usual Montreal breakfast of bagels and coffee, but I embraced the local flavors and enjoyed the experience.

Lunch was at The Tibetan Kitchen, a restaurant known for its authentic Tibetan cuisine. I ordered a bowl of Thukpa, a traditional noodle soup with vegetables and meat. The soup was rich and flavorful, a perfect remedy for the chilly weather. I also tried the momos, steamed dumplings filled with meat and vegetables. They were juicy and delicious, especially when dipped in the spicy chutney. The Tibetan Kitchen had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with both indoor and outdoor seating. It was a popular spot for both locals and tourists, and I enjoyed chatting with some fellow travelers and sharing stories about our adventures.

As evening approached, I found myself at Bon Appetit Restaurant and French Bakery for dinner. Despite its name, the restaurant served a variety of cuisines, including Indian, Tibetan, and Continental. I decided to try the tandoori chicken, which came highly recommended. The chicken was succulent and flavorful, cooked to perfection in the traditional clay oven. For dessert, I couldn't resist trying one of the French pastries, a flaky croissant filled with almond cream. It was a delightful end to a satisfying meal. The restaurant had a charming and cozy ambiance, with warm lighting and comfortable seating. It was a perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day of exploring.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took one last stroll through the Leh Main Market. The market was still bustling with activity, even in the late evening. The shopkeepers were friendly and welcoming, and I enjoyed browsing through the various stalls and soaking in the local atmosphere. I picked up a few more souvenirs for Sophie and Mateo, small tokens to remind them of my adventure in this remote corner of the world.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I reflected on my first day in Leh. It had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory overload that left me feeling both exhilarated and exhausted. The high altitude was definitely a challenge, but I was determined to overcome it and make the most of my time here. I was already falling in love with this unique and fascinating region, and I couldn't wait to see what the next day would bring. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Thiksey Monastery and Shey Palace, eager to delve deeper into the cultural and historical tapestry of Ladakh. I am also thinking of visiting Lehchen Restaurant and Bar, to experience the night scene.

The warmth of the Pashmina around my shoulders was a welcome comfort as the temperature dipped. It reminded me of the simple joys in life and the beauty of experiencing new cultures, something I always try to instill in Mateo. I am already excited to share these stories with Sophie and Mateo when I return to Montreal. For now, though, I am content to savor the moment, to breathe in the crisp mountain air, and to embrace the adventure that lies ahead. The mountains here seem to whisper ancient secrets, and I am here to listen.

As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. Leh has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the coming days will be filled with even more incredible experiences. This solo journey is turning out to be exactly what I needed, a chance to reconnect with myself and to discover the hidden wonders of this remote and magical land. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
