Gion's Timeless Charm

Today was a day of wandering through the heart of Kyoto, soaking in the timeless beauty and cultural richness of the Gion district. With the family in tow, we embraced the spirit of discovery, letting the ancient streets guide us through shrines, parks, and bustling shopping areas. It’s days like these that remind me why we traded the familiar shores of Hawaii for the vibrant tapestry of Europe, and now, the exquisite artistry of Japan.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. It might seem odd to start our day in Kyoto with pizza, but Leila was craving something familiar, and Greta and I were happy to oblige. The reviews I had read online praised their stone-oven baked pizzas, and I must say, they lived up to the hype. The chewy crust and delicious toppings were a perfect start to a day of exploration. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a cozy and authentic pizza place tucked away in Kyoto. I even overheard a staff member speaking English, making the experience even more comfortable for us. I think it’s safe to say that starting our day with a taste of Italy was a good call.

With our bellies full, we made our way to Yasaka Shrine. As we approached, the vibrant colors and intricate details of the shrine immediately captivated us. The air was filled with a sense of reverence and history, a palpable reminder of Kyoto's deep cultural roots. I've always been drawn to places where the past feels present, and Yasaka Shrine certainly delivered that feeling in spades. The shrine was bustling with activity, as it seems we arrived on a day when the Shinko Festival at nearby Matsuo Taisha Shrine was taking place. The atmosphere was electric, with locals and tourists alike coming to pay their respects and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. We wandered through the grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the serene beauty of the surrounding gardens. Leila was particularly fascinated by the intricate carvings and the colorful lanterns that adorned the shrine.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its stunning landscapes and historic sites, but in the way it seamlessly blends tradition with the everyday, creating a living, breathing tapestry of culture.

After spending a good amount of time at Yasaka Shrine, we strolled over to Maruyama Park, a stone's throw away. Known for its stunning cherry blossoms, the park was in full bloom, creating a breathtaking spectacle of pink and white. Despite the crowds, there was a sense of tranquility and peace that permeated the air. Families picnicked under the trees, couples strolled hand-in-hand, and artists captured the scene on canvas. The park’s famed weeping cherry tree, illuminated as “Gion no yozakura” at night, was especially stunning. I can only imagine how magical it must look after sunset. Greta, ever the romantic, was particularly taken with the blossoms, and Leila, of course, was thrilled to run around and play amidst the fallen petals. I tried my best to capture the beauty of the scene with my camera, hoping to preserve the memory of this perfect spring day. I managed to snap some great shots of Greta and Leila framed by the cherry blossoms. I am definitely going to print and frame them once we get back to Berlin. It’s moments like these that make traveling with family so special.

From Maruyama Park, we ventured into Gion, Kyoto's geisha district. The narrow streets and traditional wooden machiya houses transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. We wandered through the neighborhood, marveling at the architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. Although we didn't spot any geishas, the allure of the district was undeniable. It was easy to imagine the elegant women gliding through these streets, their kimonos rustling softly in the breeze. I made sure to point out the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theatre, where the Miyako Odori dances are held, a springtime tradition in Kyoto. I had read about the tradition, and it sounds like a rare opportunity to experience traditional performing arts up close. I was glad to share a bit of Kyoto’s cultural heritage with my family.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Inobun, a multi-story shop on Shijo Street. This place was a treasure trove of unique and beautiful items, from fashion and kitchenware to toys and souvenirs. Greta was particularly drawn to the traditional crafts, while Leila was fascinated by the array of toys and trinkets. I found myself admiring the artistry and craftsmanship of the various products. We spent a good hour browsing through the store, each of us finding something to take home as a memento of our time in Kyoto. The rooftop garden on the fourth level provided a welcome respite for Leila, allowing her to stretch her legs and burn off some energy while Greta and I finished our shopping.

For lunch, we treated ourselves to a Kobe beef steak at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. This was definitely a splurge, but one that was well worth it. The restaurant exuded an air of elegance and sophistication, with a modern interior that was both comfortable and refined. We were seated at a counter where we could watch the chef prepare our meal right in front of us. The beef was cooked to perfection, melting in our mouths with each bite. I opted for the Kobe filet, and it was hands down one of the best steaks I've ever had. The chef also prepared a variety of vegetables and side dishes, each one bursting with flavor. Greta and Leila were equally impressed, and we all agreed that this was a culinary experience we wouldn't soon forget. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, making us feel welcome and pampered. The combination of exquisite food and impeccable service made this a truly memorable meal.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten for dinner. Tucked away near Nishiki Market, this restaurant offered a taste of authentic Kyoto cuisine. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting, with a traditional Japanese setting that exuded charm and elegance. We opted for the Kaiseki, a multi-course meal that showcased the flavors and ingredients of the season. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and expertly prepared. The flavors were subtle and refined, a testament to the skill and artistry of the chef. Leila, surprisingly, enjoyed the experience, trying new and unusual dishes with an open mind. Greta and I savored each course, appreciating the attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients. The service was impeccable, with the staff providing explanations of each dish and ensuring that we were comfortable and well taken care of. This was a culinary journey that transported us to the heart of Kyoto, offering a glimpse into the city's rich gastronomic heritage.

As we walked back to our ryokan, the streets of Kyoto were quiet and peaceful. The day had been long and full, but we were filled with a sense of contentment and gratitude. We had experienced the best of what Kyoto has to offer – its ancient shrines, its stunning natural beauty, its vibrant culture, and its exquisite cuisine. It was a day that we would cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Heian Shrine, the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, and the Eikandō Temple. I’m also hoping to sneak away for a bit to the Kyoto Star Bar, which I’ve heard is a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts. Until then, o'ahu mai au (goodnight).
