Solo Exploration of Portugal's Ria Formosa Natural Park
Day 1: Ria Formosa's Embrace: A Solo Traveler's First Day in Paradise
Kai Lee begins his solo journey in Ria Formosa Natural Park, exploring lagoons, savoring local cuisine, and embracing the park's beauty.
Arrival in Ria Formosa: A Symphony of Nature's Welcome
The air here is different—salty, fresh, and filled with the promise of untold stories. After a smooth flight from Berlin to Faro and a quick transfer, I finally arrived at the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The transition from the urban landscape to this serene coastal haven was seamless, like stepping into a living postcard. I’m eager to spend the next 11 days discovering all of its hidden gems, and sharing them with you, my readers.

My journey began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Ria Formosa. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Portuguese coffee filled the air as I sat down, ready to fuel up for the day's adventures. I opted for the *tosta mista* and a *galão*, a local favorite, while I planned my day. It was a perfect start to immersing myself in the local culture.

From the restaurant, I made my way to Lands - Ria Formosa Natural Park Eco Boat Tours. I’d booked a solar boat tour, keen to explore the park's waterways in an environmentally conscious way. The gentle hum of the electric motor was a welcome change from the noisy streets of Berlin, and as we glided through the lagoon, I felt an immediate sense of peace. The guide, a local with an encyclopedic knowledge of the park, pointed out various bird species, each with its own unique story. October is an excellent time to visit, apparently, with migratory birds on the move. I managed to spot a few waders, spoonbills, and even a couple of little egrets. I made sure to bring my binoculars as I knew that October is one of the best months to spot migrating birds. It felt like a privilege to witness such biodiversity.

The essence of travel lies not just in seeing new landscapes, but in experiencing them with all your senses, allowing them to become a part of you.
The afternoon sun warmed my skin as the boat gently cut through the water. I took countless photos, trying to capture the vibrant colors of the landscape. The park is a maze of lagoons, islands, and marshlands, each turn revealing a new vista. I learned about the park's crucial role in protecting the region's biodiversity and the ongoing efforts to preserve this natural wonder. I have always been passionate about ocean conservation, so it was especially heartening to witness these efforts firsthand. I was also able to see the different habitats of the park, including the dunes, lagoons, salt marshes and reed beds.
For lunch, I decided on Casa do Lago, a restaurant recommended for its stunning lakeside views and fresh seafood. The restaurant's elegant, nautical-inspired décor created a relaxed atmosphere. I savored a dish of grilled sea bass, caught fresh that morning, while enjoying the panoramic views of the Ria Formosa. The gentle breeze and the sound of the water lapping against the shore made it a truly unforgettable dining experience. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I also enjoyed a glass of Vinho Verde, which paired perfectly with the seafood.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Cantaloupe, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and creative cocktails. I chatted with some locals, sharing stories and laughter, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. It was a reminder of the simple joys of travel—connecting with people and embracing new experiences. Greta and Leila would have loved the atmosphere here. I made a mental note to bring them back someday.

For my first dinner in Ria Formosa, I chose Restaurante Estaminé, located on Ilha Deserta. Getting to the island was an adventure in itself, requiring a short boat trip across the lagoon. The restaurant is known for its sustainable practices and fresh, local cuisine. The location is strategic, as it is located on an uninhabited island within the Ria Formosa Natural Park. I indulged in a seafood cataplana, a traditional Algarve stew, bursting with flavors of the sea. The restaurant itself is a wooden, modernist piece of architecture that was rebuilt and rebranded in 2021. The panoramic views of the ocean, golden sand dunes, and abundant birdlife added to the magic of the evening. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The restaurant is also self-sufficient, using solar energy to power the building and produce potable water.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, the stars twinkled above, and the gentle sounds of the night filled the air. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Ria Formosa had already captured my heart, and I knew the days ahead would bring even more adventures. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the São Lourenço Bird Hide and hike the Trilho São Lourenço, eager to discover more of the park's diverse birdlife and stunning landscapes. Perhaps I’ll pick up a souvenir at Ria Shopping, too.
I'm also excited to see the local community come together to celebrate the Festa da Ria Formosa. I heard that the festival will feature all kinds of activities, from musical performances to culinary delights. It seems like the festival was established to showcase the rich cultural heritage and biodiversity of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to charge my camera and double-check my backpack. I realized I'd forgotten my portable charger and rain jacket – rookie mistake! Note to self: always double-check the essentials, even when paradise seems perfect. But even without those items, I'm ready for whatever tomorrow brings. Goodnight from Ria Formosa!
I can’t wait to share more of my journey with you tomorrow. I hope you will join me as I continue to explore this beautiful corner of Portugal. Until then, *Aloha* and *Adeus*!
