Finding Zen in Kyoto: A Day of Reflection

Today, Hans and I embarked on a journey that was less about ticking off sights and more about soaking in the atmosphere of Kyoto. We traded the bustling city streets for serene paths, ancient temples, and moments of quiet contemplation. It was a day to reconnect with ourselves and appreciate the simple beauty that Kyoto so generously offers.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku. I had read that Yasakadori Enraku offers an authentic taste of Kyoto cuisine and is known for its attentive service. We savored traditional Japanese flavors, fueling up for our day of exploration. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere was the perfect start to a day focused on tranquility and reflection. I couldn't help but think of my 'Hygge' back in Heidelberg, and how this experience resonated with the same sense of warmth and contentment.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Philosopher's Path. The path is a stone walkway that follows a canal, and is named after Nishida Kitaro, a philosopher and professor at Kyoto University who would meditate while walking this route. Despite the winter chill, the air was crisp and invigorating. I imagined the cherry blossoms that would soon adorn the path in spring, creating a tunnel of pink. Even without the blooms, the path held a quiet charm, with moss-covered stones, quaint shops, and the gentle sound of the flowing water.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand temples, but in the subtle details that invite contemplation and peace.

As we strolled along, we stumbled upon Kazari Nishiki, a delightful shop filled with local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a small, hand-painted fan as a memento of our journey, a reminder of the delicate beauty we were encountering at every turn. It's these little discoveries that make traveling so rewarding, connecting us to the local culture in a tangible way.

Our next stop was Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. Unlike its golden counterpart, the Silver Pavilion isn't covered in silver. Instead, it embodies a more understated elegance, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi – finding beauty in imperfection. The pavilion itself is a simple, wooden structure, but it's the surrounding gardens that truly captivated me. The meticulously raked sand garden, known as the Sea of Silver Sand, was particularly striking. It was designed to reflect the moonlight, creating a serene and contemplative space.

I found myself drawn to the moss garden, a testament to the beauty of aging and impermanence. The moss, a vibrant green, carpeted the ground, creating a soft, inviting landscape. Hans, with his architect's eye, appreciated the way the buildings and gardens were seamlessly integrated, creating a harmonious whole. It reminded us of the principles of Scandinavian design, where form and function come together in perfect balance.

From the Silver Pavilion, we ventured to Hōnenin Temple, a hidden gem nestled away from the main tourist path. As we approached, the thatched-roof gate, covered in moss, hinted at the tranquility within. Honen-in is known for its serene atmosphere and beautiful gardens. The Byakusadan, two raised sand mounds with intricate patterns, greeted us at the entrance. These mounds are said to purify the mind and body as you enter the temple grounds.

The temple was quiet, with only a few other visitors. We wandered through the gardens, admiring the koi pond and the lush greenery. The air was still and peaceful, a welcome respite from the bustling city. It felt like stepping into another world, a place where time slowed down and worries faded away. I took a moment to close my eyes, breathe deeply, and simply be present in that moment of serenity.

For lunch, we stopped at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, a restaurant specializing in shabu-shabu. The restaurant had a calming atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We savored the delicate flavors of the hotpot, a comforting and satisfying meal after our morning of walking. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the beauty we had encountered and recharge for the afternoon ahead.

As evening approached, we made our way to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for dinner. Located along the Takase River, this restaurant is known for its premium steak and teppanyaki. The ambiance was intimate and refined, offering a delightful contrast to the day's earlier, more rustic experiences. Hans, always appreciative of good architecture, admired the restaurant's design, which blended seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape.

The meal was a culinary masterpiece, each course expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The chef's skill was evident in every bite, and we savored the rich flavors and textures. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration, a celebration of the senses and a testament to Kyoto's culinary excellence.

As I write this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Our itinerary includes a visit to Heian Shrine, Maruyama Park, and the Gion district. We'll also be stopping by Bar K6 for a nightcap, a chance to unwind and reflect on our experiences. I'm particularly excited to explore Gion, known for its traditional wooden machiya houses and geishas. It's a glimpse into Kyoto's past, a chance to witness the city's rich cultural heritage.

Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing them fully, engaging with the local culture, and finding moments of peace and reflection. Kyoto has a way of slowing you down, inviting you to appreciate the simple things, and connecting you with your inner self. It's a city that nourishes the soul, and I'm grateful for every moment we've spent here.

Before I sign off, I wanted to share a little something I read that seemed to perfectly capture the essence of our day:

In the heart of Kyoto, one finds not just temples and gardens, but a sanctuary for the soul.

Until tomorrow, sayōnara from Kyoto!
