Exploring the Wonders of Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 1: First Day Snaefellsnes: Volcanic Views and Coastal Wonders
Karen and Hans explore Snæfellsjökull National Park, witness stunning cliffs at Arnarstapi, and savor local Icelandic cuisine.
A Day of Icelandic Immersion
After months of anticipation, Hans and I finally touched down in Iceland! The drive from Reykjavík to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula was breathtaking, a constant reminder of why we chose this destination. I'm so excited to share this journey with you, as we explore Iceland's stunning landscapes and embrace its unique culture. The fresh air, the dramatic scenery – it’s all so invigorating.
The weather was kind to us, hovering around 11°C with moderate rainfall – typical for June, I've read. It was perfect for our first adventure: exploring Snæfellsjökull National Park. I made sure to pack my waterproof jacket, remembering the unpredictable Icelandic weather, and Hans, ever the prepared architect, had his camera ready to capture every moment. I was also glad I had my hiking boots, though I did realize I had forgotten the sunscreen! Note to self: buy some tomorrow.

Our first stop was the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center. It was fascinating to learn about the park's diverse wildlife, geology, and history. The exhibition on the local fishermen and their relationship with nature was particularly engaging. I loved how they appealed to all the senses, encouraging visitors to taste and smell different elements of the display. Hans was intrigued by the geological displays, especially the information about Snæfellsjökull glacier, which, as you may know, is said to be one of the Earth's seven energy centers. We picked up a few souvenirs – a small knitted puffin for my desk back in Heidelberg and a book on Icelandic folklore for our collection. I always love finding a little something to remind me of our travels.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
After the visitor center, we drove towards Arnarstapi, eager to see the famous cliffs. Before that, though, it was time for breakfast. We stopped at Hlaðan Veitingahús, a cozy spot where we enjoyed traditional Icelandic pastries and strong coffee. It was the perfect way to warm up and fuel our exploration. I even tried to pronounce some of the Icelandic words on the menu, much to Hans’ amusement.

Arriving at Arnarstapi, we were immediately struck by the dramatic coastal scenery. The Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint offered panoramic views of basalt columns, sea arches, and the powerful Atlantic Ocean. We spent a long time just watching the waves crash against the rocks, feeling the spray on our faces. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the raw beauty of nature. We walked along the coastal path, marveling at the unique rock formations and the diverse birdlife. The air was filled with the cries of seabirds, and we spotted several species, including arctic terns and fulmars. I tried to capture some photos, but no picture can truly convey the scale and grandeur of this place.

For lunch, we chose Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its locally sourced ingredients and traditional Icelandic cuisine. I opted for the fish and chips, a local favorite, while Hans went for the lamb stew. Both dishes were hearty and delicious, providing the perfect sustenance for our day of exploration. The restaurant itself was charming, with large windows offering stunning views of Mount Stapafell. I made a mental note to try their famous fish soup next time.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of Arnarstapi. We visited the iconic stone arch, Gatklettur, and walked along the scenic coastal path to Hellnar. The landscape here was even more dramatic, with towering cliffs and hidden coves. We took our time, soaking in the tranquility and enjoying the fresh sea air. As we walked, we talked about the contrast between this rugged landscape and the orderly streets of Heidelberg. It's these kinds of experiences that make travel so enriching. I was also grateful that we had chosen to visit in June. The long daylight hours meant we had plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Stapinn for dinner. This family-run restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu of traditional Icelandic dishes. We shared a plate of smoked salmon and a hearty lamb dish, savoring the flavors of Iceland. The staff were incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the local area and offering recommendations for our trip. It felt like we were dining with friends, a truly authentic Icelandic experience.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I am excited to explore the Gerðuberg Cliffs, Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, and Lýsuhóll. We'll also be stopping by Hj á Góðu Fólki, a local bar, for a taste of Icelandic nightlife. I'm particularly intrigued by Lýsuhóll, known for its mineral-rich waters and purported healing properties. I've packed my swimsuit, hoping to take a dip and experience the benefits firsthand.
Back at our accommodation, I'm reflecting on our first day in Snæfellsnes. It's been a whirlwind of natural beauty, delicious food, and warm hospitality. I feel a deep connection to this place, a sense of peace and tranquility that I haven't felt in a long time. As I drift off to sleep, I'm already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures. I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore Iceland with Hans, to share these experiences and create lasting memories.
Hygge is not just a word; it’s a feeling. And tonight, here in Iceland, I feel truly hygge. Good night from Snæfellsnes!
Tomorrow we will continue our adventure, and I can't wait to share it with you all. Stay tuned for more tales from Iceland! I hope you will enjoy it!
