Discover Uji's timeless beauty: historic temples, serene parks, and exquisite cuisine offer a delightful escape from Kyoto's bustling city.
Uji: A Journey Through Time and Taste
Today, I ventured beyond the familiar streets of Kyoto with my friends, seeking a tranquil escape in the charming town of Uji. Known for its exquisite matcha and historical landmarks, Uji promised a day of serenity and cultural immersion. As a content writer always on the lookout for compelling stories, I was eager to uncover the unique experiences this town had to offer. And as a lover of photography, I was ready to capture the beauty of Uji, framing every shot to tell a story.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. I've always been a fan of starting the day with a good meal, and this place did not disappoint. It was a simple yet satisfying start, fueling us up for the day's adventures. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, savoring the delicate flavors and textures. It reminded me of the breakfasts my abuela used to make back in Salinas, Puerto Rico – comforting and nourishing.

With our appetites sated, we set off to explore Uji's historical treasures. Our first stop was Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we approached, the Phoenix Hall shimmered in the sunlight, its reflection dancing on the surface of the pond. The intricate architecture and serene atmosphere transported me back in time. It was initially built as a countryside retreat villa for the powerful politician Fujiwara no Michinaga in 998, and it wasn't until 1052 that his son turned it into a temple, ordering the construction of the Phoenix Hall. The hall is featured on the back of the Japanese ten-yen coin! I took my time capturing the temple from every angle, wanting to preserve its beauty in my photographs. I even managed to snag a spot on one of the short guided tours of the Phoenix Hall.

Next, we strolled across the iconic Uji Bridge, one of Japan's oldest bridges. Spanning the Uji River, the bridge offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Uji Bridge dates back to 646, making it one of Japan's oldest bridges. It has been a central setting in Japan's oldest novel, *The Tale of Genji*. I paused to admire the flowing river, its gentle currents carrying away the remnants of winter. The air was crisp and clean, invigorating my senses. We then wandered into Uji Park, a tranquil oasis nestled along the riverbank. Although it's February, and not quite cherry blossom season, the park still held a quiet charm. I imagined how beautiful it must be in spring, with the cherry trees in full bloom. As we strolled through the park, I couldn't help but reflect on the simple joys of life – good company, beautiful scenery, and a sense of peace.

After our morning of exploration, we decided to venture a bit further afield for lunch. Biwako Terrace, with its panoramic views of Lake Biwa, seemed like the perfect choice. Getting there was an adventure in itself, requiring a train ride and a ropeway ascent. But the views from the top were well worth the effort. As we sat down to enjoy our meal, the vast expanse of Lake Biwa stretched out before us, its shimmering surface reflecting the winter sky. The temperature difference from the ground is about 7 to 10 degrees C, so I was glad I had my jacket with me. I savored every bite of my lunch, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty with my friends.

In the late afternoon, we returned to Kyoto, but the day was far from over. For dinner, we had reservations at Teppanyaki Minami, a renowned restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and theatrical dining experience. As a foodie, I was excited to indulge in the artistry of teppanyaki. The chef skillfully prepared our meal on a sizzling iron griddle, each dish a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. It was a feast for the senses, and I reveled in every moment. The service charge of 13% was worth it!

To cap off our day, we decided to check out Bar Ixey. I had read about its unique herbal liqueurs and cozy atmosphere, and I was eager to experience it for myself. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm and inviting space, filled with the aroma of exotic herbs and spices. The bartender, a true mixologist, crafted personalized cocktails for each of us, using a blend of traditional and innovative techniques. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and indulgence. It's located near the Shirakawa River in Gion, and they specialize in herbal liqueurs which are spirits infused with the aromas of various plants.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Kyoto adventure. I'm already feeling a tinge of sadness, but I'm determined to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Katsura Imperial Villa, the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, and the Kamigamo Shrine. I'm also planning to pick up some souvenirs at Souvenir Kyoto, wanting to bring a piece of this magical city back home with me. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore the beauty and culture of Japan with my friends. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of embracing new experiences, connecting with others, and finding joy in the simple moments of life. As I reflect on my time in Kyoto, I realize that it's not just the famous landmarks and tourist attractions that have captured my heart, but also the hidden gems and unexpected encounters that have made this journey so special. From the serene temples of Uji to the bustling streets of Gion, Kyoto has offered me a glimpse into a world of beauty, tradition, and warmth. And as I prepare to bid farewell to this enchanting city, I know that its memories will stay with me long after I've returned to Berlin.
Before I drift off to sleep, I think of what my friend Mateo said earlier today, as we were crossing the Uji Bridge:
Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that take you off the beaten path.
And that's exactly what today was – a journey into the heart of Uji, a hidden gem that has captured my heart with its timeless beauty and serene atmosphere. Good night, world. Until tomorrow!
P.S. I almost forgot! I'm still kicking myself for forgetting to pack a raincoat and a portable power bank. Lesson learned – always double-check your essentials before embarking on a new adventure! It's a rookie mistake, I know, but even seasoned travelers like myself can make them. But hey, at least I have a good story to tell, right? And who knows, maybe I'll have an opportunity to buy a traditional Japanese umbrella – now that would be a cool souvenir!
Embark on a cultural journey through Kyoto with friends, exploring historic temples, savoring local cuisine, and experiencing traditional Japanese hospitality.
