Lost in the Emerald Embrace of Arashiyama

r
Today, Kyoto revealed another layer of its enchanting personality. It was a day dedicated to nature's artistry, a symphony of green hues and tranquil whispers in the Arashiyama district. I set out with my friends, eager to immerse ourselves in the famed bamboo forest and discover the hidden gems nestled within.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chihana. Though I generally prefer sticking to traditional Puerto Rican breakfast, I was not disappointed. The service was exceptional and the food was exquisite. I savored each bite of the Kyoto-style dishes, appreciating the delicate flavors and beautiful presentation.

With our stomachs content, we made our way to Arashiyama. I had envisioned the bamboo forest countless times, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer scale and serenity of the place. Towering stalks of bamboo stretched towards the sky, creating a cathedral of green. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path below. The air was cool and crisp, filled with the gentle rustling of leaves. It felt like stepping into another world, a sanctuary far removed from the bustling city.

We strolled along the winding path, marveling at the bamboo's imposing height and the intricate patterns formed by its stalks. The forest was surprisingly crowded, a testament to its popularity, but as we ventured deeper, the throngs of tourists thinned out, and we found ourselves enveloped in a sense of tranquility. I paused to take a few photographs, trying to capture the magic of the moment, but the true essence of the bamboo forest is something that can only be experienced firsthand.

Emerging from the bamboo forest, we found ourselves at the entrance to Tenryu-ji, a Zen temple with a rich history and stunning gardens. Founded in 1339, Tenryu-ji is one of Kyoto's five great Zen temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. We paid the admission fee and stepped inside, eager to explore its grounds.

The temple's main hall was impressive, with its intricate wooden carvings and serene atmosphere. We removed our shoes and padded softly across the polished floors, taking in the temple's grandeur. But it was the gardens that truly stole my heart. Designed in the 14th century by Muso Soseki, the gardens are a masterpiece of Zen landscaping, with meticulously arranged rocks, ponds, and plants.

We wandered through the gardens, admiring the vibrant colors and the peaceful ambiance. The pond reflected the surrounding trees and mountains, creating a mirror-like effect. We paused on a wooden bridge, gazing at the koi carp swimming lazily in the water. The gardens were a haven of tranquility, a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though the Hatto Hall was closed today, I'm sure the Cloud-Dragon Painting would have been a sight to behold.

As much as I enjoy visiting historical sites, it's important to me to get my shopping fix. So after Tenryu-ji, we headed to the Daimaru Kyoto Store. I was in search of some authentic Japanese souvenirs to take back home to Berlin. The Daimaru store was a treasure trove of local crafts, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles. I spent hours browsing the aisles, admiring the craftsmanship and artistry on display. I ended up purchasing a beautiful silk scarf and a set of handcrafted tea cups, perfect reminders of my time in Kyoto.

Our final stop of the day was Okochi Sanso Garden, a hidden gem tucked away in the hills above Arashiyama. This garden was once the private estate of Denjiro Okochi, a famous Japanese actor, and it's now open to the public. I had read about this garden before, but I wasn't prepared for its beauty and tranquility.

The entrance fee included a cup of matcha tea and a small sweet, which we enjoyed in a traditional tea house overlooking the gardens. Sipping the tea, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The gardens were meticulously designed, with winding paths, moss-covered stones, and carefully pruned trees. We strolled through the gardens, discovering hidden waterfalls, serene ponds, and breathtaking viewpoints.

One of the highlights of Okochi Sanso Garden was the panoramic view of Kyoto and the Hozu River. From this vantage point, the city stretched out before us, a tapestry of rooftops and temples. The Hozu River snaked through the landscape, reflecting the sunlight like a ribbon of silver. It was a truly unforgettable sight.

For lunch, we stopped at Komefuku. I had the tempura set and was thoroughly impressed. I made sure to arrive before 2:30PM to take advantage of their lunch set menu. The tempura was crispy and light, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, filled with locals enjoying their midday meal.

As evening approached, we made our way to Sakuragawa for dinner. Located near the Takase River, the restaurant was a cozy and intimate space, perfect for a celebratory meal. I opted for the Kaiseki course, eager to sample a variety of traditional Japanese dishes. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef's attention to detail was evident in every bite. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
