Cultural Exploration in Kyoto with Friends
Day 10: Kyoto's Spiritual and Urban Tapestry: A Day of Discovery
Explore Kyoto's soul, from the vibrant Fushimi Inari Shrine to the modern heights of Kyoto Tower, a blend of tradition and city views.
Echoes of Tradition, Whispers of the City
Today in Kyoto was a vibrant dance between the ancient and the modern, a journey that took me from the serene paths of a thousand torii gates to the glittering heights of a city展望台. It's a day that reminded me why I fell in love with travel in the first place – the thrill of experiencing something new, the joy of connecting with a culture so different from my own, and the quiet moments of reflection amidst the hustle and bustle.
The day began early, as I was eager to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha. I'd heard so much about this iconic shrine, and I wanted to experience its magic firsthand. I met up with my friends, and we took a short train ride to the Fushimi Inari Station. Stepping out of the station, the crisp morning air filled my lungs, carrying with it the scent of cedar and the distant murmur of the city waking up. The approach to the shrine was already bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to this sacred place. It reminded me a bit of the lively atmosphere of the street art scene back in Berlin, but with a distinctly Japanese flavor.
The vermilion torii gates, stretching endlessly up the mountain, were even more breathtaking in person than in the photos. Each gate, donated by a company or individual, was a testament to faith and prosperity. As we walked through the seemingly endless tunnel, I felt a sense of awe and wonder wash over me. The light filtering through the gates created an ethereal glow, casting long shadows that danced along the path. I couldn't help but think about my abuela back in Salinas, Puerto Rico, and how she would have loved the spiritual energy of this place. She always had a deep connection to nature and a strong sense of faith, and I knew she would have felt right at home here.
The journey through Fushimi Inari is not just a walk through a shrine, but a passage through time, faith, and the enduring spirit of Japan.

The climb was challenging, but the higher we went, the fewer people we encountered, and the more peaceful the atmosphere became. We took our time, stopping to admire the intricate details of the smaller shrines and the stunning views of Kyoto below. I made sure to bring my camera, wanting to capture the beauty of the shrine and the surrounding landscape. Photography has always been a passion of mine, a way to document my travels and share my experiences with others. It’s a skill I honed while exploring the vibrant streets of Berlin, capturing the city's raw energy and artistic expression.
After descending from Fushimi Inari, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Hyoto Shijo Karasuma for lunch. I was eager to try their famous Dashi Shabu, a hot pot dish made with a flavorful broth. The restaurant was elegant and inviting, with a traditional Japanese aesthetic. We were seated at a table overlooking a small garden, which added to the serene atmosphere. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, explaining the menu in detail and making recommendations based on our preferences. Despite the language barrier, we managed to communicate effectively, a skill I've developed from my time living in Berlin and interacting with people from all over the world.
The Dashi Shabu was absolutely delicious. The broth was rich and savory, and the ingredients were fresh and high-quality. We savored every bite, enjoying the warmth of the soup and the company of each other. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning hike and prepare for the rest of our day. I made a mental note to try and recreate the dish back in Berlin, adding my own Puerto Rican twist to it, of course. I'm always looking for ways to incorporate my cultural heritage into my cooking, and I think this would be a fun and delicious experiment.

Next on our itinerary was Tō-ji Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage site. This temple is known for its five-story pagoda, which is the tallest wooden structure in Japan. As we approached the temple, the pagoda loomed large in the distance, a symbol of Kyoto's rich history and cultural heritage. The temple grounds were vast and impressive, with numerous halls, gardens, and statues to explore. We spent a couple of hours wandering around, admiring the architecture and learning about the temple's significance. I was particularly impressed by the Kondo Hall, which houses a collection of Buddhist statues, each with its own unique story and symbolism. It reminded me of some of the historical landmarks I've visited in Europe, each with its own tales of the past.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Kyoto Tower, a modern structure that offers panoramic views of the city. I had heard mixed reviews about the tower, with some people calling it an eyesore and others praising it for its unique design. But I was curious to see it for myself and form my own opinion. As we ascended to the observation deck, the city lights began to twinkle below, creating a magical and enchanting scene. From the top, we could see the entire city laid out before us, a mix of ancient temples, modern buildings, and winding streets. It was a stunning contrast, a reminder of Kyoto's ability to blend tradition and modernity.

I spotted Kiyomizu-dera temple in the distance, perched on a hillside overlooking the city. I had visited it earlier in the trip, and I was struck by its beauty and serenity. From the tower, it looked even more majestic, a symbol of Kyoto's enduring spirit. I also noticed the Fushimi Inari Shrine, its vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountain. It was amazing to see how far we had walked that morning, and how much of the city we had explored in just one day.
For dinner, we had reservations at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its innovative Kaiseki cuisine. I was excited to experience this culinary masterpiece, as I had heard so much about the chef's creativity and attention to detail. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a counter seating only a handful of guests. This allowed us to interact with the chef and watch him prepare each dish with precision and care. The Kaiseki cuisine was a work of art, each dish a delicate balance of flavors, textures, and colors. The chef used seasonal ingredients to create a menu that was both traditional and modern, a reflection of Kyoto's culinary heritage.

One of the most memorable dishes was the sesame tofu, a signature dish that the chef had been perfecting for years. It was creamy and rich, with a subtle sesame flavor that lingered on my palate. I also enjoyed the grilled salmon, which was cooked to perfection and served with a variety of flavorful sauces. The entire meal was a sensory experience, a journey through the flavors of Kyoto.
After dinner, we decided to end the night at Bar K6, a stylish bar known for its extensive selection of whiskies and cocktails. I'm not usually one for fancy cocktails – give me a beer and I'm happy – but I was intrigued by the bar's reputation and wanted to see what it had to offer. The bar was dimly lit and sophisticated, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The bartender was a master of his craft, creating unique and delicious cocktails based on our preferences. I tried a whisky sour, which was perfectly balanced and refreshing. It was the perfect way to wind down after a long day of exploring.

As I sipped my drink, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the spiritual paths of Fushimi Inari to the urban heights of Kyoto Tower, it had been a day of discovery and connection. I felt grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience new cultures, and I was excited to see what tomorrow would bring. We're planning to visit Nishiki Market, the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, and the Kyoto Railway Museum. I'm particularly excited about Nishiki Market, as I've heard it's a foodie's paradise.
Before heading back to the hotel, I took a moment to soak in the atmosphere of Bar K6. It was a far cry from the gritty bars I used to frequent in Berlin, but it had its own unique charm. I felt a sense of belonging, a connection to the people around me, even though we came from different backgrounds and spoke different languages. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with people and cultures, and finding common ground in our shared humanity. As I walked out of the bar and into the cool night air, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Kyoto had captured my heart, and I knew I would never forget my time here.
