Cultural Exploration in Kyoto with Friends
Day 8: Kyoto's Tranquil Side: Gardens, Villas, and Temple Serenity
Discover Kyoto's serene beauty through its botanical gardens, imperial villa, and ancient temples, offering a peaceful escape from city life.
A Day of Serenity in Kyoto
Today was all about embracing the quieter, more contemplative side of Kyoto. After several days of bustling markets and crowded temples, I was eager to explore the city's gardens and villas, seeking a sense of peace and connection with nature. Accompanied by my friends, we ventured north, ready to discover hidden gems away from the usual tourist trails.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. I decided to try their tempura, and it was amazing. The batter was light and crispy, and the seafood inside was so fresh and flavorful. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to exploring Kyoto's natural beauty.
Kyoto Botanical Gardens: A Breath of Fresh Air
Our first stop was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Despite it being February, the gardens held a quiet charm. While the plum blossoms were just beginning to peek out, hinting at the spring to come, the greenhouse was a vibrant explosion of tropical color. I was particularly impressed by the variety of orchids and the towering displays of cacti. It was a welcome escape from the winter chill, and I spent a good hour wandering through the humid air, camera in hand, trying to capture the exotic beauty.

The gardens themselves are steeped in history, having been Japan's first public comprehensive botanical garden, opened in 1924. It's incredible to think of its transformation over the years, from a place of food production during the war to the tranquil haven it is today. Even in winter, the meticulously manicured lawns and structured plant displays spoke volumes about the Japanese dedication to harmony and balance.

Shugakuin Imperial Villa: A Step Back in Time
Next on our itinerary was the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, a sprawling complex of gardens and teahouses nestled in the hills east of the city. This was an experience that required a bit of planning, as visits are by reservation only and involve a guided tour. However, it was well worth the effort. The villa, constructed in the mid-17th century by Emperor Gomizunoo, is a masterpiece of Japanese landscape design.

The tour, though conducted in Japanese, came with an English audio guide that provided fascinating insights into the history and design of the villa. We strolled through the Lower, Middle, and Upper Gardens, each offering unique perspectives and features. The way the surrounding natural scenery is incorporated into the garden design is truly remarkable.
One of the highlights was the Upper Garden, with its expansive pond and meticulously placed stones. The Rinuntei teahouse, perched on a hill overlooking the garden, offered breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding mountains. It was easy to imagine Emperor Gomizunoo retreating here to escape the pressures of court life and find solace in the beauty of nature. The villa is composed of three parts, Upper Villa, Middle Villa, and Lower Villa. It was so impressive to see the Pond of the Bathing Dragon, “Yokuryu-chi” shaped like a dragon.
As we walked through the villa, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the history and artistry that had gone into creating this tranquil space. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these cultural treasures for future generations.
Eikando Temple: A Moment of Reflection
Our final stop of the day was Eikando Temple, known for its beautiful autumn foliage. While the maple leaves were long gone, the temple still held a serene charm. The main hall, with its intricate wooden carvings and peaceful atmosphere, invited contemplation. I lit a stick of incense and spent a few moments in quiet reflection, appreciating the temple's history and spiritual significance.

Eikando Temple has a rich history, dating back over 1,100 years. It has transitioned through different Buddhist sects, finally settling as a temple of the Jodo sect. The temple is also known as Eikando in Maple Leaves, because of its beautiful garden filled with many maple trees. But the most unique aspect of Eikando is the Mikaeri-Amida statue, which depicts Amida Buddha looking back over his shoulder. The story behind this statue is touching: In 1082, the Abbot Yokan was walking around the altar when the Amida came down and began to lead Yokan. Yokan stopped walking, and the Amida looked back over his left shoulder and said Yokan, you are slow. It is said that Yokan was deeply impressed the merciful pose of the Amida and pleaded with the Amida to keep the pose forever.
While there, I saw that February 15th is the date of Nehane service for Nirvana. It was fascinating to learn about the temple's transition from Esoteric Buddhism to Pure Land Buddhism and the story behind the unique Mikaeri Amida statue, which is said to have looked back at a priest to encourage him. It's these little stories that bring history to life.
Evening Indulgence
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Kikunoi Roan, a restaurant renowned for its classic Kyoto kaiseki cuisine. From what I've read, Chef Murata is something of a living legend. The meal was an exquisite journey through seasonal flavors and textures, each dish a work of art in itself. The amuse of tofu, Maitake mushroom, and Yuzu was a burst of flavor. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the rice course with salmon row was divine. I left feeling completely satisfied and grateful for the opportunity to experience such culinary excellence.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Bar Fishbowl. The bar had a very relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kodaiji Temple, Maruyama Park, and Gion Corner. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring Gion, known for its preserved wooden machiya houses and geishas. We also plan to have breakfast at Nakamura, lunch at Khaos Spice Diner, and dinner at Mezopotamia Kebab House. And, of course, a little shopping at D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO.
Today was a reminder that Kyoto is more than just temples and shrines; it's a city where you can find serenity in the midst of urban life. From the vibrant colors of the botanical gardens to the tranquil beauty of the imperial villa and the spiritual atmosphere of Eikando Temple, it was a day that nourished my soul and deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture.
As I settle in for the night, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Kyoto continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, and I can't wait to see what new discoveries await.
It's funny, though, being away from Berlin makes me miss some of the things that I usually take for granted. I miss the street art scene and the lively cultural festivals. I even miss cooking my own Puerto Rican dishes! But I know that this trip is a unique opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture and broaden my horizons. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up some new culinary skills to bring back to Berlin.
For now, though, I'm content to savor the memories of today and dream of the adventures to come. Kyoto, you have captured my heart.
The staff at Kikunoi Roan had excellent English skills, making it a great destination for tourists. I found that the bolder flavors are suited to Western palates. At the end of the meal, I received a menu written in English, with my name on it.
I am also very grateful that my friends are here with me to share these experiences together. I don't think I would be having nearly as much fun if I was travelling solo. I am looking forward to the rest of our trip. I feel like I am learning more about myself and about the world as we continue our journey.
Embark on a cultural journey through Kyoto with friends, exploring historic temples, savoring local cuisine, and experiencing traditional Japanese hospitality.
