Reaching for the Sky: My Day on Yakushima's Highest Peak

Today was a day of immense physical challenge and even greater reward. The journey to the summit of Mount Miyanoura, the highest peak in Kyushu, was a test of endurance, but the stunning views and the profound sense of accomplishment made every step worthwhile. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comfort of Berlin for the unpredictable allure of the open road.

The morning began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. It's becoming a familiar spot, and I find comfort in the routine. I fueled up with a traditional Japanese breakfast, knowing I'd need all the energy I could get. The deep-fried flying fish was particularly good, and I made sure to grab a tankan orange juice to take with me for later. It's funny, I never thought I'd develop such a fondness for fish at breakfast, but travel has a way of changing your habits, doesn't it?

With my backpack prepped and my hiking boots laced tight, I set off for Yakushima National Park. The park itself is a sprawling testament to nature's artistry, and I was eager to see what wonders awaited me on the ascent. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of cedar and damp earth. As I started on the trail, I couldn’t help but think of my friends back in Berlin, probably just waking up to a leisurely Sunday brunch. I smiled, knowing I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.

The initial part of the hike was relatively gentle, winding through ancient forests that felt like something straight out of a Ghibli film. Towering yakusugi cedars, some over a thousand years old, stood sentinel along the path, their gnarled branches draped in emerald moss. The sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. It was a truly magical experience, and I found myself stopping frequently to capture the beauty with my camera. I am not the only one to think so, as the forest here has served as an inspiration for Princess Mononoke.

As I climbed higher, the terrain became more challenging. The trail grew steeper, and the path was often rocky and uneven. There were even sections with ropes to assist in the ascent. I had to focus on each step, carefully navigating the obstacles in my path. Despite the difficulty, I found a rhythm, a meditative state where the only thing that mattered was the next footfall. I remembered something my abuela used to say: "*El que persevera, triunfa.*" He who perseveres, triumphs.

The view from the summit was simply breathtaking, a panoramic vista of rolling mountains, lush forests, and the sparkling ocean stretching out to the horizon.

Around midday, I stopped for lunch at a scenic overlook. I had packed a simple bento box from the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant – some rice balls, grilled vegetables, and a few slices of local deer meat. It was nothing fancy, but it tasted incredible after hours of hiking. As I ate, I gazed out at the stunning landscape, feeling a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty.

The final push to the summit was the most challenging part of the hike. The air grew noticeably thinner, and the temperature dropped. The trail became even steeper, and I had to use my hands to scramble over rocks. But with each step, I knew I was getting closer to my goal. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the top of Mount Miyanoura.

The view from the summit was simply breathtaking. A panoramic vista of rolling mountains, lush forests, and the sparkling ocean stretching out to the horizon. I could see the entire island spread out before me, a tapestry of green and blue. I spent a long time at the summit, simply soaking in the view and savoring the moment. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, a feeling of having conquered something significant. I took several photos, wanting to capture the feeling and share it with all of you.

The descent was almost as challenging as the ascent, but I was buoyed by the sense of accomplishment. As I made my way down, I passed other hikers, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. There was a camaraderie among us, a shared understanding of the challenge we had all undertaken. Some people were hiking with local guides, which is a good idea if you want to learn more about the local biodiversity. I considered it, but I prefer to explore on my own.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped by Yakusugiya to pick up a few souvenirs. I wanted to find something that would remind me of my time on Yakushima, something that would capture the essence of this magical island. I settled on a small carving made from yakusugi cedar, its intricate grain telling a story of centuries of growth. Perhaps I could find something made of Yaku-deer leather too. I hear it's getting popular.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Shiosai. I had heard great things about their seafood, and I was eager to try some of the local specialties. I ordered the grilled flying fish, a Yakushima delicacy, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was tender and flaky, with a delicate smoky flavor. The portions are generous and reasonably priced. I paired it with a glass of local sake, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the ache in my muscles and the warmth of the sun on my skin. Today was a day of immense physical challenge, but it was also a day of profound spiritual reward. I pushed myself to my limits and discovered a strength I didn't know I possessed. I witnessed breathtaking beauty and experienced a deep connection with nature. It's days like these that make me feel truly alive.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Yaku-jinja Shrine and the Kokemusu Forest. I've heard that the Kokemusu Forest is especially beautiful, with its moss-covered trees and serene atmosphere. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure, another day of discovering the wonders of Yakushima. And maybe I'll grab a drink at Cafe&Bar RainTree in the evening.

Before I sign off, I wanted to share a few thoughts on Yakushima in July. The weather has been mostly sunny, with occasional showers. The humidity is high, but the temperatures are comfortable, especially in the mountains. It's a great time to visit if you enjoy hiking and exploring the outdoors. Just be sure to pack a rain jacket and some waterproof gear, as the weather can change quickly. But don't let the rain discourage you. The forests of Yakushima are even more magical in the rain, with the moss-covered trees glistening and the air filled with the scent of petrichor.

As I reflect on my journey so far, I am struck by the unique blend of experiences Yakushima offers. The island's stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality have captivated my heart. From hiking through ancient forests to savoring local delicacies, every moment has been a treasure. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you in the days to come.

Until then, safe travels, and may your own journeys be filled with wonder and discovery.

P.S. I nearly forgot! There are several events taking place in Yakushima this month, including the World Heritage Yakushima Open Water Swimming event and the Isso Beach Festival. Unfortunately, I did not have time to attend them. Maybe next time!

Also, I've been thinking about sustainable living a lot lately. Seeing the pristine environment here in Yakushima makes me want to be more mindful of my impact on the planet. I'm going to try to incorporate more eco-friendly practices into my travels, like using reusable water bottles and supporting local businesses that prioritize sustainability.
