A Day of Island Exploration

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and unique flavors of Yakushima. From exploring lush Botanic Gardens to indulging in tropical fruits and experiencing the local culinary scene, it was a day filled with delightful discoveries. I even managed to find a cozy spot to unwind with a drink, reflecting on the day's adventures. As a freelance content writer, I always appreciate finding new sources of inspiration, and Yakushima certainly delivered.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. As the airport is near my guesthouse, it was a convenient and practical choice. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, providing the perfect fuel for the day ahead. I remembered the amazing breakfasts back home in Salinas, Puerto Rico, but this was a delightful cultural experience that I embraced wholeheartedly. It's funny how food can instantly connect you to a place.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

My first stop was the Botanic Gardens, a serene escape into Yakushima's diverse ecosystems. The gardens showcased an impressive collection of native and exotic flora, with vibrant blooms and towering trees creating a tranquil haven. I wandered through the winding paths, absorbing the rich scents and sounds of nature. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was particularly interested in the educational displays about the island's unique biodiversity and conservation efforts. The gardens offered a commanding view of the coastal Toroki Falls and Mt. Mocchomu, adding to the overall sense of tranquility. I spent a couple of hours here just wandering around and taking photos, it was so peaceful and quiet and I felt totally relaxed and at one with nature. I even imagined telling stories to Nadia about how the trees twisted themselves into knots trying to catch kids running around them.

Next on the itinerary was the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. This botanical garden is home to nearly 2000 varieties of tropical plants and fruits. The air was filled with sweet scents, and it was fascinating to see bananas, mangoes, papayas, and guavas growing in their natural environment. I learned that the garden is owned by Mr. Iwakawa, who sometimes gives tours himself. I sampled some fresh-picked tropical fruits and juices at the garden's restaurant. I had a refreshing tankan citrus juice, while another visitor opted for the guava juice. It was a delicious and healthy way to experience the flavors of Yakushima. I even picked up some handmade Japanese plum jam as a souvenir.

For lunch, I decided to try Subarashi Indian Restaurant, a surprising find on this Japanese island. As much as I love Japanese cuisine, sometimes a little taste of home is needed. The restaurant offered a range of vegetarian curries that could be made vegan, which was perfect for my dietary preferences. I ordered an eggplant curry, specifying no dairy, and it was absolutely delicious. The service was friendly and quick, and I appreciated the variety of options available. It's always exciting to see more diverse culinary offerings in unexpected places. The flavors were rich and comforting, reminiscent of the dishes my grandmother used to make. It was a welcome change of pace and a reminder that even when traveling, you can find familiar comforts in the most unlikely of places.

In the evening, I treated myself to dinner at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. This charming eatery is known for its delicious food and great service. I decided to try the flying fish ramen, a local specialty that came highly recommended. The ramen was flavorful and unique, with the delicate taste of the flying fish adding a distinct character to the dish. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other diners, exchanging travel stories and recommendations. It's moments like these that make solo travel so rewarding, connecting with people from all walks of life over a shared love of food and adventure.

To cap off the night, I ventured to Fisherman's Bar NINA, a local watering hole known for its fresh seafood and relaxed vibe. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a local craft beer and savored the moment, reflecting on the day's experiences. The bartender was friendly and shared some interesting stories about the island's fishing heritage. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the local culture.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Yakushima has a way of captivating you with its natural beauty and its warm, welcoming locals. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with nature and your loved ones. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Yakushima National Park and hike Mt. Miyanoura, eager to discover more of this enchanting island's hidden treasures. I’m especially looking forward to visiting the Yakusugi shop.

I am so glad I remembered to pack my phrasebook, it has been so helpful in connecting with the locals, and I am also glad I brought my camera, as I have been able to capture some amazing shots. I am kicking myself that I forgot my insect repellent and travel pillow, as both would have been useful today. I will make sure I pack them for my next trip!

Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It's a place where nature and culture intertwine, creating a truly unforgettable travel experience. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring. Until then, おやすみ (oyasumi)!
