Day 3: Santa Marta's Charms and Jungle Rhythms
Today was a blend of city exploration and immersing myself further into the vibrant culture surrounding the trek to Ciudad Perdida. It felt like a perfect balance, a chance to recharge before diving deeper into the heart of the Sierra Nevada. The anticipation for tomorrow, when we continue our ascent, is definitely building!
After a surprisingly good night's sleep in my hostel in Santa Marta – seriously, those earplugs are a lifesaver – I met up with the guys for breakfast at Restaurante Doña Ana. I was excited to try some authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, but I was disappointed when I found out that the restaurant served traditional Colombian food. Still, I was eager to start the day with a hearty meal. The 'arepas con queso' were delicious, and the strong Colombian coffee definitely woke me up. It reminded me of my abuela's kitchen back in Salinas, Puerto Rico, with its comforting aromas and bustling energy.
With our stomachs full, we decided to explore Parque San Miguel. It was a welcome respite from the city's hustle, a green oasis where locals gathered to chat, play music, and simply enjoy the day. I took some photos of the vibrant flowers and the old trees, trying to capture the essence of this peaceful corner of Santa Marta. It's amazing how a simple park can offer such a sense of community and tranquility.

"Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like a quiet walk in a park or a shared meal with friends."
Next on the agenda was our official tour briefing for Ciudad Perdida. We met our guide, a wiry, charismatic man named Mateo, who seemed to know everything about the region's history and the indigenous cultures. He gave us a rundown of what to expect – the challenging terrain, the river crossings, the insects (oh, joy!), and the incredible reward of reaching the Lost City. He also emphasized the importance of respecting the local communities and their traditions. I made a mental note to brush up on my Spanish phrases; I definitely didn't want to be *that* tourist.
Lunch was at Babaganoush Restaurante-Bar, which offered delicious food with breathtaking Caribbean views. I opted for some homemade pasta, which was delicious. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance that invited you to unwind and savor your meal.

With the briefing done and dusted, we had some free time before dinner. We wandered through the city, soaking up the atmosphere and doing some last-minute shopping. I managed to find a decent hat to protect myself from the sun, and I stocked up on some extra insect repellent – I wasn't taking any chances.
For dinner, we chose El Sitio Bacano, a restaurant known for its authentic Colombian cuisine. I tried the bandeja paisa, a hearty platter of beans, rice, meat, avocado, and plantains. It was a true taste of Colombia, and I savored every bite. The restaurant buzzed with energy, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and lively atmosphere.

As the sun began to set, we decided to check out Marley Bar Reggae Rock 80's. The bar was located in Parque de los Novios in Santa Marta. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day, with its laid-back vibe and great music. I enjoyed a cold beer while listening to some classic reggae tunes, feeling the rhythm of the Caribbean. It was a fun mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the music and the good vibes.

Tomorrow, we're back on the trail, heading deeper into the Sierra Nevada. The anticipation is definitely building, and I can't wait to see what adventures await us. I’m a little nervous, especially about the 1,200 steps I’ve heard about. But I’m mostly excited to see the Lost City and learn more about the people who built it.
Before heading back to the hostel, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Santa Marta had surprised me with its charm and energy. It's a city that seamlessly blends its colonial past with a vibrant present, a place where you can find both tranquility and excitement. But the real adventure is yet to come, and I'm ready to embrace whatever challenges and rewards lie ahead.
Tomorrow’s itinerary includes continuing the trek to Ciudad Perdida Teyuna – Lost City Trek, breakfast at Restaurante Arcadia, lunch at Restaurante Quien Como DIOS, and dinner at BURURAKE. I’m also hoping to find some souvenirs at the Ciudad Perdida shop. I’m excited to see what the new day brings !
Wish us luck!
P.S. I almost forgot! I ran into a fellow traveler today who recognized me from my blog. It’s always a little surreal to meet someone who reads my stuff, but it’s also incredibly motivating. Thanks for following along, everyone! Your support means the world to me.
Until tomorrow,
Kevin
P.P.S. I’m starting to think I should have packed more socks. My feet are already feeling the strain of the trek !
