Day 4: Conquering the Lost City: Day 4 of the Ciudad Perdida Trek
Experience the heart of the Lost City trek! Kevin Rivera shares his day exploring ancient ruins, jungle trails, and Colombian culture.
Reaching New Heights in the Lost City
Today was the day we'd all been waiting for: a full immersion into the heart of Ciudad Perdida. After three days of trekking through the Sierra Nevada jungle, anticipation was high. I woke up with a mix of excitement and a touch of weariness, but the thought of exploring the ancient ruins propelled me forward. It's a day I won't soon forget, filled with history, stunning views, and a profound connection to the past.
The day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Arcadia. Fueled up, we started our ascent towards the Lost City. The air was thick with humidity, but the coolness of the morning was a welcome change. The trail wound through dense vegetation, the sounds of the jungle serenading our every step. I made sure to apply a new layer of insect repellent, as I had forgotten my sunscreen and didn't want to make another mistake. I was thankful I had brought my camera, as I wanted to capture every moment of this incredible journey. I walked alongside my friends, sharing stories and laughter, as we motivated each other through the tougher sections of the trail. It's moments like these that make traveling with friends so special – the shared experiences and the camaraderie that develop along the way.
The final stretch involved climbing the iconic 1,200 stone steps. These ancient steps, built by the Tayrona people, wind their way up the mountainside, offering glimpses of the city above. Each step was a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of this ancient civilization. The climb was challenging, but the thought of reaching the top kept me going. As I ascended, I imagined what life must have been like for the people who once called this city home. I paused frequently to catch my breath and take in the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. The green canopy stretched as far as the eye could see, broken only by the occasional river or waterfall.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the top. And there it was: Ciudad Perdida Teyuna - Lost City Trek. The sight was breathtaking. Terraces, plazas, and circular platforms spread across the mountainside, a testament to the advanced engineering and architectural skills of the Tayrona people. The city was larger and more impressive than I had imagined. It was a humbling experience to stand in this place, knowing that it had been hidden from the world for centuries. I wandered through the ruins, marveling at the stonework and imagining the lives of the people who once lived here. Our guide shared stories of the Tayrona culture, their beliefs, and their connection to the land. I learned about their sophisticated agricultural practices, their intricate social structures, and their reverence for nature. It was fascinating to hear about a civilization that had thrived in this remote location for so long.
I spent a good part of the morning exploring the city, taking photos, and simply soaking in the atmosphere. The energy of the place was palpable, a sense of history and mystery that permeated every stone. I found a quiet spot overlooking the valley and sat in contemplation. I thought about my life back in Berlin, my work, my friends, and my family. I realized how much I had missed connecting with nature and how important it was for me to take these breaks from my busy life to reconnect with myself and the world around me. Being here, surrounded by the remnants of an ancient civilization, gave me a new perspective on things. It made me realize how small I am in the grand scheme of things and how important it is to live in the present moment.
For lunch, we enjoyed a meal at Restaurante Quien Como DIOS. After a satisfying meal, we began our descent. The way down was easier on the lungs, but harder on the knees. I focused on each step, carefully navigating the uneven terrain. As we descended, I reflected on the experience of the past few days. The trek to Ciudad Perdida had been physically challenging, but it had also been incredibly rewarding. I had pushed myself beyond my comfort zone, learned about a fascinating culture, and connected with nature in a profound way. I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place.
Back at camp, after resting for a bit, I took the opportunity to visit a shop in Ciudad Perdida. I wanted to find a souvenir to remind me of this incredible journey. I ended up buying a handcrafted bracelet made by a local artisan. It was a simple piece of jewelry, but it held a deep significance for me. It was a reminder of the Tayrona people, their culture, and their connection to the land. It was also a reminder of my own journey, the challenges I had overcome, and the lessons I had learned.
For dinner, we enjoyed a delicious meal at BURURAKE. The food was simple but satisfying, and it was the perfect way to end a long day of trekking. As we ate, we shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about the highlights of the day. I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow trekkers, a bond forged by our shared experience. After dinner, I retired to my tent, exhausted but content. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of ancient cities and jungle adventures.
As I prepare for tomorrow, I know there is still one more day of trekking. Tomorrow, we will be heading back towards civilization, retracing our steps through the jungle. We'll have breakfast at La Muzzería, lunch at Porthos Steakhouse & Pub, and dinner at RESTAURANTE DONDE ORFI. I plan to enjoy a drink at El Mono ROjo. While I am looking forward to a hot shower and a comfortable bed, I will also miss the simplicity and the beauty of the jungle. I will miss the sounds of the birds, the smell of the earth, and the feeling of being so close to nature. The Lost City has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know that I will carry its memories with me for the rest of my life.
The trek to Ciudad Perdida is more than just a hike; it's a journey into the heart of history and culture. It's an opportunity to connect with nature, challenge yourself physically, and learn about a fascinating civilization. If you're looking for an adventure that will leave you feeling inspired and transformed, I highly recommend adding Ciudad Perdida to your list. Just don't forget your sunscreen!
Tomorrow, we begin our journey back, carrying with us the spirit of the Lost City. I'm eager to see what other adventures await me on this incredible trip.
