A Day of Discovery in the Sierra Nevada Foothills

Today was a day of reconnecting with nature, exploring the serene landscapes near Minca, and indulging in some delicious local flavors. It's amazing how quickly the tranquility of the mountains can wash away the stresses of city life. I'm so grateful to be sharing these moments with my friends, as we delve deeper into the heart of Colombia.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nader Delicias Árabes. I must admit, starting the day with Lebanese food in Colombia was not something I had envisioned, but it was surprisingly delightful! I opted for the smoked lamb, and it was a burst of flavors. The blend of Middle Eastern spices with the fresh Colombian air was an invigorating way to kick off our explorations. The restaurant had a calm ambiance and beautiful decor.

Fueled up and ready to go, we set off towards the El Dorado Nature Reserve. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the stunning Sierra Nevada. As we ascended, the air grew cooler, and the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the symphony of the jungle. El Dorado Nature Reserve is a haven for birdwatchers, and while I'm no ornithologist, I couldn't help but be captivated by the vibrant colors and exotic calls of the birds we spotted. The reserve is nestled in the mountains, offering a tranquil retreat. We took a leisurely hike, breathing in the crisp mountain air and marveling at the panoramic views. The experience was truly magical, waking up to the sun kissing the mountain tops.

After immersing ourselves in the beauty of El Dorado, we made our way to Reserva Natural Amazilia. This place is a hidden gem, a serene campground that offers a deep connection with nature. Surrounded by lush greenery, it’s a paradise for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. We spent the afternoon exploring the hiking trails, discovering hidden waterfalls, and soaking in the breathtaking viewpoints. It was the perfect opportunity to unwind and appreciate the tranquility of the Colombian countryside. The reserve promotes eco-friendly practices, ensuring visitors can enjoy their stay while minimizing their environmental impact.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we headed back towards Minca, our stomachs rumbling in anticipation of dinner. We decided to try Chiquita Brava Bar y Restaurante, enticed by its reputation for delicious Italian and Italian-inspired dishes. The restaurant had a cute and cozy atmosphere, and the open-air setting provided stunning views of the surrounding hills. I opted for the homemade gnocchi, and it was heavenly! The pasta was fresh, and the flavors were rich and authentic. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and natural beauty.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by YOI, a local shop in Santa Marta. It was a great opportunity to pick up some souvenirs and support local artisans. I found a beautiful hand-woven bag, a perfect reminder of our time in the Sierra Nevada. Santa Marta offers a variety of shopping experiences from local markets to big malls.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about immersing myself in different cultures, connecting with nature, and creating lasting memories with friends. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Colombia. I am also grateful that I remembered to pack my portable charger, as I was able to capture so many photos and videos throughout the day!

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Cascada Perdida and Pozo Azul. I've heard that Cascada Perdida is a lesser-known waterfall accessible from La Veranda Hotel, and Pozo Azul has three pools for swimming. I'm excited to discover more hidden gems and continue our adventure in this beautiful country. We also plan to have breakfast at Arabesca, lunch at Restaurante Sabor Naguará E PASA'O, and dinner at Basilea Comida Francesa y Mediterranea. I am also hoping to check out Mood Cocktail bar.

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

P.S. I really wish I had remembered to bring sunscreen and spare socks! The sun was intense, and my feet are definitely feeling the miles we've hiked. Note to self: always double-check the essentials list!
