Halfway There!

Today marked the halfway point of our Lost City trek, and what a day it was! The air was thick with humidity, the kind that clings to you like a second skin, but the stunning scenery and the camaraderie with my friends kept my spirits high. Every step deeper into the Sierra Nevada felt like a step further back in time, connecting us to the ancient Tairona people and their remarkable history. Today was a challenging but rewarding day, filled with cultural immersion, delicious food, and the forging of deeper connections with my travel partners.

We started our day with an early breakfast at La Muzzería in Santa Marta. Even though we were in Santa Marta only for a short while, I had heard about it. The hotel was close to the restaurant so we decided to give it a try. I opted for the Kokilla Vegetariana, a warm pot filled with a creamy soup of tomatoes, eggplant, and mushrooms, topped with a crust of corn maize and mashed chickpea. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventure. Cayeye, a local dish made from mashed green bananas, was also popular at our table. It was a hearty and delicious way to start our trek. I made sure to take some pictures of the vibrant and colorful interior of the restaurant.

After breakfast, we hit the trail, ready to embrace whatever challenges lay ahead. The trek itself was demanding, with steep ascents and descents that tested our endurance. The August weather brought its own set of obstacles, with the humidity making every step feel twice as difficult. Despite the physical strain, the lush jungle scenery was a constant source of motivation. Towering trees, vibrant flora, and the sounds of exotic birds created an immersive experience that made me feel like I was walking through a living, breathing painting.

The journey is the destination; every step on this trek is a lesson in resilience, culture, and the profound beauty of the natural world.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the trek was the opportunity to interact with the indigenous communities along the way. We passed through an Indigenous Reservation, home to descendants of the Tayrona people: the Kogi, Wiwa, Arhuaco, and Kakuamo. Seeing their traditional way of life, so deeply connected to the land, was a humbling experience. It was a reminder of the importance of respecting their culture and their ancestral lands.

Lunch at Porthos Steakhouse & Pub was a welcome break. Although a steakhouse might seem out of place in the middle of the jungle, it was a popular spot among trekkers. I opted for the vegetarian burger, which was surprisingly delicious and filling. My friends raved about the steaks and BBQ ribs, and the craft beer was a refreshing treat. The lively atmosphere and friendly staff made it a memorable meal.

As the afternoon wore on, the trail continued to challenge us. The final stretch to our campsite involved navigating a series of steep, slippery steps. It required focus and teamwork, helping each other to maintain our balance and avoid any mishaps. Finally, we arrived at our destination: RESTAURANTE DONDE ORFI.

Dinner at RESTAURANTE DONDE ORFI was a simple but satisfying affair. The “menu del dia” offered traditional Colombian dishes at an affordable price. I enjoyed eggs with empanada and cheese, while others opted for chorizo and pancakes. The food was hearty and flavorful, providing the energy we needed to recover from the day’s trek.

After dinner, we decided to unwind at El Mono Rojo, a popular bar in Santa Marta. The bar had a vibrant atmosphere, with colorful lights and a pulsating sound system. We enjoyed some expertly crafted cocktails and danced to a mix of reggaeton and salsa. It was a fun way to celebrate our progress on the trek and to bond with our fellow travelers.

As I reflect on today’s journey, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and accomplishment. The Lost City trek is not just a physical challenge; it’s a cultural experience that immerses you in nature and connects you with the rich history of Colombia. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when we visit El Dorado Nature Reserve and Reserva Natural Amazilia. I’ve heard they're incredible places to continue connecting with nature. I am also excited to try the local cuisine at Nader Delicias Árabes for breakfast, Restaurante Santisabella for lunch, and Chiquita Brava Bar y Restaurante for dinner. And perhaps I'll find a unique souvenir at YOI.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy sunscreen and spare socks tomorrow. My fair skin is already feeling the effects of the tropical sun, and an extra pair of socks would definitely come in handy.

Tomorrow, we venture deeper into the Sierra Nevada. Good night from Colombia!

P.S. I am so glad I decided to embark on this trek with friends. Their support and companionship have made the experience all the more meaningful. Sharing stories, laughter, and even a few struggles along the way has created a bond that I know will last a lifetime. I am also grateful for the opportunity to learn about the indigenous cultures of Colombia and to support sustainable tourism in the region.

P.P.S. I am starting to get used to the basic accommodations along the trail. While I initially missed the comforts of a hotel, I am now appreciating the simplicity of life in the jungle. Sleeping in a bunk bed with a mosquito net is a small price to pay for the incredible experiences I am having.
