Whispers of the Underground

Today was a day of subterranean secrets and cascading wonders. Leaving behind the familiar trails, I ventured into the heart of Chapada Diamantina National Park, seeking out places where light dances with water in the most unexpected ways. It's a journey that reminds me why I traded the predictable comforts of Berlin for the raw, untamed beauty of Brazil.

My day began, as it often does here, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. Katiana Alves, the chef, always seems to know exactly what I need to fuel my adventures. Today, it was a plate of *cuscuz* with eggs and a strong *cafézinho*. I swear, that woman has a sixth sense for culinary magic. I made sure to thank her, knowing I'd be back for dinner—her *moqueca* is legendary, and after a day of exploring, nothing sounds better.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards my first destination: Poço Encantado. The drive itself was a scenic prelude, the landscape unfolding with each turn, showcasing the vastness of the park. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming wildflowers.

Reaching Poço Encantado, I was immediately struck by the stillness of the place. The entrance to the cave is unassuming, almost hidden, but as I descended the steps, a different world began to reveal itself. The temperature dropped noticeably, and the air grew heavy with humidity. Then, I saw it – the enchanted well.

The sight was breathtaking. A massive underground lake, illuminated by a beam of sunlight piercing through a narrow opening in the cave ceiling. The water was so clear, so impossibly blue, that it felt like looking into another dimension. The sunlight created an ethereal glow, highlighting the rocky formations and the sheer depth of the well. Swimming isn't allowed here, a measure to protect the delicate ecosystem, but honestly, just standing there, gazing into its depths, was an experience in itself.

The earth has music for those who listen.

I spent a good hour simply absorbing the atmosphere, the silence broken only by the occasional drip of water. It was a moment of profound peace, a reminder of the hidden wonders that exist beneath the surface of our world. As a photographer, I was in heaven, trying to capture the play of light and shadow, the surreal beauty of the scene. But no photo could truly do it justice; it was something you had to experience firsthand.

Leaving Poço Encantado, I felt a sense of awe and gratitude. It's moments like these that make all the challenges of solo travel worthwhile. I hopped back into my rented car, and navigated towards my next stop: Cachoeira Capivara. The contrast between the still, silent well and the roaring waterfall was something I was eager to experience.

The drive to Cachoeira Capivara was an adventure in itself, the road winding through dense vegetation and over rocky terrain. I had to remind myself that this wasn't the autobahn back in Berlin, but a chance to embrace a different kind of driving experience. I even passed a local shop called Miscelania, full of local crafts and goods, but decided to save my shopping for later.

Arriving at Cachoeira Capivara, the sound of rushing water filled the air. The hike down to the base of the falls was relatively short, but the anticipation grew with each step. And then, there it was – a powerful cascade of water plunging into a natural pool below. The spray created a cool mist, a welcome relief from the afternoon heat.

I spent the rest of the afternoon swimming in the refreshing waters, letting the force of the waterfall massage my shoulders. It was invigorating, a complete contrast to the stillness of Poço Encantado. I met a few fellow travelers, exchanged stories, and shared some snacks. There's something about being in nature that brings people together, a shared appreciation for the beauty of the world around us.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I reluctantly made my way back to Lençóis. The sky was ablaze with color, a fiery farewell to another incredible day in Chapada Diamantina. I stopped by Miscelania on the way back and picked up a few souvenirs – a hand-woven bracelet and a small painting of the park.

Back in Lençóis, I headed straight to Restaurante Sabor da Serra for that *moqueca* I had been dreaming about all day. Katiana didn't disappoint. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of seafood, coconut milk, and spices. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day's adventures, the contrast between the serene well and the powerful waterfall, the hidden wonders of Chapada Diamantina.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Pedra do Diamante and Cachoeira Ferro Doido. I heard that the sunset view from Pedra do Diamante is magical, and I'm looking forward to another day of hiking and swimming. And to cap it off, maybe I'll check out Budha Bar in Vale do Capão for a drink. I need to remember to pack sunscreen this time, though. I'm starting to look a bit too much like a *camarão* (shrimp).

This solo journey is turning out to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, to challenge myself, and to discover the hidden gems of Brazil. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new salsa moves along the way.

For now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure. Until then, *abraços* from Chapada Diamantina!
