Echoes of the Past, Flavors of the Present

Today was a day of deep reflection and appreciation here in the Con Dao Islands. It’s amazing how a place can be both heartbreakingly historical and stunningly beautiful. I spent the day exploring the solemn grounds of Bãi Sọ Người, a place that speaks volumes about the island's past, and then balanced the heaviness with the simple pleasures of local cuisine and serene island views. It's a journey of contrasts, but one that enriches the soul.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Infinity Cafe & Restaurant. It's a popular spot in town, and I could see why. The cafe had a cool, relaxed vibe, and their playlist set a perfect tone for the morning. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese coffee and a light pastry. The coffee was strong and flavorful, just what I needed to prepare for the day ahead. Sipping my coffee, I looked over my plans. Today, I wanted to delve deeper into Con Dao's history. After breakfast, I set off to visit Di tích Bãi Sọ Người, or the 'Relic of the Beach of Skulls'.

The site is located within the Chuồng Bò (Cow Shed) complex, a place that served as a prison during the French colonial era. Knowing that this was once the site of immense suffering, I approached it with a sense of reverence. As I walked through the grounds, I tried to imagine what life must have been like for the prisoners held here. The stories are brutal, with accounts of massacres and inhumane treatment. It's a stark reminder of the island's dark past, a past that is important to acknowledge and remember. The quietness of the place was deafening, amplifying the weight of history.

Visiting historical sites helps us understand the struggles and sacrifices that have shaped the present, urging us to cherish peace and freedom.

After spending a significant amount of time at Bãi Sọ Người, I felt a need to counterbalance the somber experience with something lighter. I decided to explore more of what Con Dao had to offer. I made my way to Nhà hàng Nam Dinh for lunch, a local favorite known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes. I ordered a plate of fresh seafood and some spring rolls. The flavors were vibrant, and the ingredients tasted incredibly fresh. It was a delightful contrast to the morning's heavy atmosphere. It was a reminder that even in places with dark histories, life continues, and beauty can still be found in simple things like a delicious meal.

In the afternoon, I decided to experience ‘Con Dao Experience’. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a guided tour that took me to some of the island's lesser-known spots, offering insights into local life and culture. The guide shared stories about the island's history, its people, and its natural environment. I learned about the efforts being made to preserve Con Dao's unique ecosystem and promote sustainable tourism. It was inspiring to see how the community is working to create a better future while honoring its past.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to Sunset Lounge for dinner. Located atop The Secret hotel, the lounge offered stunning panoramic views of the ocean and the surrounding islands. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences. I ordered a cocktail and a light meal, and watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, a world away from the somber mood of the morning. Sipping on my drink, I thought about the resilience of the human spirit and the ability to find beauty even in the darkest of times.

It was a great way to end the day, connecting with people from different backgrounds and celebrating the shared experience of travel.

Con Dao in October is quite pleasant. The weather is mild, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C. Although there might be some rain, it's generally less frequent compared to the peak rainy season. The humidity is around 77%, so it's good to stay hydrated.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Côn Đảo and Six Senses Con Dao. I'm looking forward to exploring more of the island's natural beauty and perhaps indulging in some relaxation at the resort. It’s important to balance historical exploration with moments of tranquility and self-care.

As I head back to my guesthouse, I'm filled with a mix of emotions. Today was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering the past, honoring the present, and looking forward to the future. Con Dao is a place that challenges and inspires, a place that stays with you long after you leave. It's a place that reminds me of the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and the importance of finding beauty in the midst of darkness. Good night from Con Dao!

And, as a final thought, I'm so glad I remembered to pack my camera and travel journal. I've been diligently capturing all these moments, and I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you all. I'm also making a mental note to buy a portable phone charger tomorrow; it’s becoming increasingly clear that my phone battery can barely keep up with my adventures!

Before I drift off to sleep, I think about the Mid-Autumn Festival, which often takes place in October. It sounds like a vibrant celebration with cultural dances and arts. I'll have to see if there are any local festivities happening during my stay. It would be a wonderful way to experience more of Con Dao's culture.

Also, I am thinking about the turtles. Con Dao is known for its turtle nesting season, which runs from May to October, with the peak being from June to September. I learned that about 400 sea turtles come to Con Dao every year to breed. The most popular islands to see the turtles are Bay Canh Island, Tre Lon Island, Cau Island, and Tai Island. Maybe I can take a tour to see the baby turtles making their way to the sea. That would be an unforgettable experience.

As I close my eyes, I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique and beautiful island. Con Dao has a way of getting under your skin, of touching your heart and soul. It's a place that I will never forget, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Until then, goodnight from Con Dao.

Maybe tomorrow I will also try a mixology class, or a Yoga class, it sounds like a great way to unwind.
