Day 2: Waterfalls and Whispers of the Wild

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Hardangervidda National Park. We set out with a plan to witness the cascading wonders of Nykkjesøyfossen and Vedalsfossen, and the day unfolded into an immersive experience of nature's grandeur.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Stigstuv Turisthytte AS. Fuelled up on traditional fare, Hans and I were ready to delve deeper into the park's embrace. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a symphony of nature that invigorates the senses. August in Hardangervidda means temperatures hovering around 10-12°C (50-54°F), so layering was key. I was glad I had my trusty wool sweater; it’s a piece of home that keeps me grounded, no matter where our travels take us.

Our first stop was Nykkjesøyfossen. The drive itself was a treat, winding through landscapes that seemed plucked from a Norse saga. As we approached, the roar of the waterfall grew louder, an anticipation-building crescendo. We parked and took the short walk to the viewpoint. The sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking.

Nykkjesøyfossen plunges down with such force, a dazzling display of nature's power. Mist kissed our faces as we stood in awe, the sunlight catching the droplets to create fleeting rainbows. I tried to capture its essence with my camera, but some scenes are simply too grand for a lens. We spent a good while there, just absorbing the spectacle. It's moments like these that remind me why I love being a travel blogger – sharing these experiences with you all is such a joy.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

After Nykkjesøyfossen, we continued our journey towards Vedalsfossen. The landscape shifted subtly, revealing more of the vast plateau that defines Hardangervidda. We stopped for lunch at Sjel og gane bar og restaurant, a delightful spot that offered panoramic views alongside delicious food. The reindeer burger was a particular highlight, a true taste of Norway.

Reaching Vedalsfossen required a bit more effort. The road leading to it was narrow, a single lane that snaked through the valley. But the slight challenge only added to the adventure. As we rounded a bend, there it was – Vedalsfossen, a twin cascade tumbling down the mountainside.

Vedalsfossen is impressive in its height and the sheer volume of water. It is set amidst lush greenery and rugged cliffs, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers. The falls are fed by melting water from the Hardangervidda plateau. The sight was mesmerizing, the water appearing almost like liquid silver against the dark rocks. We found a quiet spot and simply sat, letting the sounds of the falls wash over us. It's amazing how nature has this innate ability to calm the mind and soothe the soul.

As the day began to wane, we decided to make our way back, but not before a stop at Halne Fjellstugu. This mountain lodge, located at the entrance to Hardangervidda National Park, offered a cozy respite from our outdoor adventures. We settled in for a drink at the bar, Halne Fjellstugu, enjoying the warmth of the fire and the camaraderie of fellow travelers. The atmosphere was convivial, filled with stories and laughter.

Halne Fjellstugu is easily accessible by Route 7. The lodge is an ideal starting point for trekking in the summer. During the summer, there is a scheduled daily boat service on Lake Halnefjorden from Halne to Sleipa and Skaupa. The lodge serves homemade traditional food based on local produce in the café.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. Hardangervidda has a way of seeping into your being, leaving you refreshed and inspired. The waterfalls were magnificent, but it was the overall experience – the crisp air, the stunning landscapes, and the quiet moments of connection with nature – that truly made the day special.

Tomorrow, we are planning a trek to Trolltunga, another iconic Norwegian landmark. The anticipation is building, and I can't wait to share that experience with you all. We'll start with breakfast at Lægreid Høyfjellsseter before heading out for the hike. I've heard it's challenging, but the views are well worth the effort. Afterwards, we're planning to have lunch at Glacier Restaurant, Bar & Cafe, and dinner at Siderhuset Ola K. There's also a stop at Eidfjord Gift Shop planned for some souvenir hunting. I'm particularly excited about capturing the panoramic views from Trolltunga. I have a feeling it will be another unforgettable day in Norway.

As we settle into our camping spot for the night, I am reminded of a quote from John Muir:

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

And how true that is. Until tomorrow, happy travels!

Today, as I reflect on our day amidst the grandeur of Hardangervidda, I find myself drawn to thoughts of home and my little garden in Berlin. I wonder how my balcony tomatoes are doing, if the lavender is still blooming, and if the bees are finding enough nectar in the city's green spaces. This constant connection to nature, whether in the vast wilderness of Norway or the small urban oasis I've created, is what sustains me. Perhaps that's why I find these landscapes so deeply moving - they are a reminder of the simple, essential beauty that exists everywhere, if only we take the time to notice. Hans, ever the pragmatist, is already asleep, dreaming of efficient code and optimized routes. But I linger a little longer, listening to the whispers of the wind and the distant murmur of a stream, feeling grateful for this moment of peace and connection. And I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow brings another day of adventure, another opportunity to discover the hidden wonders of this remarkable place.

The journey through Hardangervidda is more than just a trip; it's an immersion into the heart of Norway's natural beauty. The park's diverse landscape, from barren plateaus to lush valleys, tells a story of resilience and adaptation. The history of human presence here, dating back to the Stone Age, adds another layer to the experience. Knowing that people have roamed these lands for millennia, hunting reindeer and seeking sustenance, creates a profound sense of connection to the past. It reminds me of my own roots, of my ancestors who lived in harmony with nature, and of the importance of preserving these landscapes for future generations. As an urban gardener, I am particularly attuned to the delicate balance between human activity and the environment. Seeing how Hardangervidda has been managed, with its blend of national park protection and local use, offers valuable lessons in sustainable living. It inspires me to continue my work in Berlin, creating green spaces that not only beautify the city but also promote biodiversity and ecological awareness. This trip is a reminder that nature is not just something to be admired from afar; it is an integral part of our lives, essential for our well-being and our future.

And as I drift off to sleep, I carry with me the image of those cascading waterfalls, the scent of the mountain air, and the quiet joy of shared moments with Hans. Tomorrow, Trolltunga awaits, promising new adventures and breathtaking vistas. But for now, I am content to rest, knowing that I have experienced another day of wonder in the heart of Norway's wilderness.
