Last Day Musings in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park

As my solo journey through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had. From exploring historic palaces to hiking scenic trails, this trip has been a perfect blend of nature and culture. Today, I wanted to soak in the last moments, discovering hidden gems and savoring the local flavors before heading back to Berlin.

The final day of my Portuguese escape began with the aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the air. I decided to treat myself to breakfast at Becco de Sintra. It was a delightful way to start the day, sitting outside and enjoying the morning sun. The coffee was strong, and the pastry was flaky and sweet – just what I needed to fuel my last day of exploration. I savored every bite, thinking about how much I'd miss these simple pleasures. I am going to miss this, but Hans will be happy to see me back home, and I am excited to share my stories.

After breakfast, I strolled along the famed Rua das Padarias. This cobblestone street is the heart of Sintra, lined with charming shops and cafes. It was a Sunday, and the street was bustling with locals and tourists alike. I popped into a few souvenir shops, picking up small tokens to remind me of my time here. I couldn't resist buying a few *queijadas* from Casa Piriquita , Sintra’s famous cheese pastries. The air was filled with the sweet scent of these delicacies, making it impossible to resist. I can't wait to bring some back to Hans.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.

For lunch, I chose Pic Nic I, a cozy spot known for its relaxed atmosphere. I opted for a simple yet satisfying meal of grilled fish and a fresh salad. As I ate, I watched people passing by, each with their own stories and destinations. It was a perfect moment of observation, a reminder of the vibrant tapestry of life that unfolds in every corner of the world. It's funny how sometimes you can sit and just watch people going about their business and it can be so relaxing.

In the afternoon, I ventured a bit further from the town center to Quinta do Pisão. This expansive nature park offered a tranquil escape from the tourist crowds. As I stepped onto the grounds, I was immediately struck by the serenity of the place. The park spans 380 hectares within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, offering a blend of breathtaking landscapes and historical heritage.

I spent hours wandering along the trails, surrounded by lush woodlands and rolling hills. The air was filled with the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves. I learned that Quinta do Pisão has a rich history, evolving from a farmstead into a sustainable agriculture and nature conservation project. It was inspiring to see how the estate combines natural beauty with a commitment to sustainability. I saw many families enjoying the outdoors, children laughing as they explored the natural surroundings. There are many activities here from interpretative walks, and donkey and horse rides. I made a mental note to come back with Hans one day; he would love this place.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back towards Sintra, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. For my final dinner, I chose Canto dos Trovadores, a restaurant known for its cozy atmosphere and traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant is known for its quality of food, service and atmosphere. I ordered a hearty stew, savoring the rich flavors and reflecting on my journey. It was the perfect way to end my trip, surrounded by warmth and good food. The excellent service and cozy atmosphere made it a memorable experience.

After dinner, I decided to check out Bar Saloon Cintra. It was a great place to relax and enjoy a drink. The bar had a lively ambiance, with friendly staff and an energetic crowd. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on my adventure. The bar offers a wide range of drinks from classic cocktails to local specialties. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, toasting to the memories I had made during my solo trip.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Berlin. The trip back will be uneventful, as it will consist of a train to Lisbon, and then a flight back to Berlin. Although, I will miss the beautiful landscapes and the kind people, I am also excited to return to my urban garden and share my stories with Hans. This trip has reminded me of the importance of taking time for myself, of exploring new places, and of embracing the beauty that surrounds us. Until next time, Portugal!
