A Solo Adventure in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park
Day 9: A Tranquil Friday Escape: Parks, Pavilions, and Portuguese Flavors
Discover Sintra's serene parks, Thai pavilions, and delightful cuisine on a peaceful solo journey through Portugal's natural beauty.
Embracing the Calm of Sintra
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet reflection, perfectly embodying the 'hygge' I often seek in my travels. Sintra revealed its peaceful side, away from the bustling tourist spots, offering moments of serenity and cultural discovery. It was a day to savor the simple pleasures, connect with nature, and appreciate the unique blend of Portuguese and global influences that make this region so special.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at A Raposa. The restaurant, nestled in a historic building, exudes a cozy and romantic ambiance that perfectly captures the spirit of Sintra. As someone who appreciates a good cup of tea and a peaceful start to the day, this tea-room-turned-restaurant was an ideal choice. I savored a traditional Portuguese pastry and a strong coffee, preparing myself for a day of exploration. A Raposa truly embraces Mediterranean synergies, prioritizing quality and care in their food preparation. The building itself dates back to 1880, adding to the charm and local spirit of the space.

Next on my itinerary was the Parque Urbano da Ribeira dos Mochos. This urban park, a green oasis in Cascais, provided a welcome escape into nature. The park spans approximately 41,000 square meters, with a portion integrated into the National Ecological Network. It was lovely to wander along the well-maintained paths, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of the Ribeira dos Mochos stream. I found a quiet spot to sit and journal, reflecting on my journey so far. Although Hans couldn't be here to share this experience with me, I felt his presence in my thoughts, especially when I noticed a couple sharing a quiet moment by the water. The park had various amenities, including a playground, making it a family-friendly destination. It’s a perfect place for leisurely strolls and escaping the hustle and bustle.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature and culture intertwine to create moments of pure serenity.
My exploration continued with a visit to the Pavilhão Sala Thai. This striking pavilion, a gift from Thailand to Portugal, commemorates the 500-year anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Sala Thai is an open pavilion used as a meeting place, offering people shade and a place to rest. The intricate details of the structure, from the golden roof to the pointed eaves symbolizing the heads of Nagas, were truly captivating. Being one of only four similar structures outside Thailand, it stands as a unique monument in Lisbon. The pavilion, constructed in the traditional Siamese style, was assembled without any metal, nails, or screws, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship. It was fascinating to learn that the pavilion was transported by boat, following the same route as Portuguese navigators 500 years prior.

For lunch, I chose Restaurante Pikatta. This restaurant offered a delightful array of international cuisine, with a focus on flavorful and satisfying dishes. I opted for one of their burgers with fries, a comforting and tasty meal that provided the perfect energy boost for the afternoon. Pikatta also offers vegetarian options, catering to a variety of dietary preferences. The restaurant's cuisine is international, with burgers, fries, and salads available. It’s a great place to try flavorful specialties.

As evening approached, I decided to indulge in some local flavors at Villa 6 for dinner. This tapas restaurant offers traditional Portuguese cuisine with a modern twist. The cozy and welcoming atmosphere made it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I sampled a few traditional petiscos, including bolinhas de alheira and rissóis de polvo, each bursting with unique flavors. To complement my meal, I enjoyed a glass of locally brewed Seteais Mag8 beer from Hops & Drops. The staff were friendly, and the creative dishes added a special touch to the dining experience. The restaurant is known for its tapas and traditional Portuguese food with a fusion of wines and beers.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to 4 Caravelas Sintra, a local bar known for its excellent cocktails and friendly atmosphere. The bar has a rating of 4.9 out of 5 on Google, reflecting its popularity among locals and visitors. I enjoyed a well-crafted cocktail while chatting with some locals, soaking in the vibrant nightlife of Sintra. The prices were reasonable, and the service was top-notch. The bar is known for its good beer and cheese boards.

As I reflect on the day, I am reminded of the beauty and tranquility that Sintra offers. It's a place where you can escape the crowds, connect with nature, and immerse yourself in the local culture. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Praia do Porto do Touro ou Guincho Velho and the Gardens of Parque da Pena, continuing my journey through this enchanting region. And perhaps I'll find a nice shop like Quinta dos Lobos - Arte Incorporada numa Estadia to pick up a souvenir. Good night!
