Explore the enchanting beauty of Hoi An through its vibrant yellow walls and breathtaking sunsets, a journey through history and culture.
Golden Hour in Hoi An: A Day of Discovery
Today was all about soaking in the unique atmosphere of Hoi An, a town that effortlessly blends history, culture, and stunning natural beauty. From the first light of dawn to the magical glow of sunset, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard. It's amazing how a single color, that iconic yellow, can define a place and capture the hearts of everyone who visits.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Hai Cafe Courtyard BBQ & Restaurant in Hoi An Old Town. The courtyard setting was so charming, a little oasis tucked away from the bustling streets. We enjoyed some delicious local dishes, fueling up for a day of exploration. It's funny, even though I'm Estonian and Hans is German, we both find ourselves drawn to the flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. Maybe it's the fresh herbs, the delicate balance of sweet and savory, or perhaps it's simply the joy of trying something new together.

After breakfast, we set out to find the famed Hoi An Yellow Wall. It wasn't hard to spot; in fact, it felt like the entire town was awash in that beautiful ochre hue. I learned that the yellow color isn't just for show; it helps to keep the buildings cool in the hot Vietnamese climate. But more than that, it's a symbol of prosperity, happiness, and harmony. As a freelance translator, I spend so much time indoors, poring over documents. It felt wonderful to wander through the streets, camera in hand, capturing the beauty of these ancient walls.

We strolled through the narrow alleyways, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. I couldn’t resist snapping photos of the vibrant yellow walls, each one telling a story of history and culture. The way the sunlight danced on the walls, creating a warm and inviting glow, was simply mesmerizing. Hans, ever the architect, was fascinated by the blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences in the buildings.
For lunch, we ventured to Mr. Sơn Restaurant, a local gem recommended by several people we met. It was a bustling spot, filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the authentic Vietnamese cuisine. We shared a few dishes, including the Cao Lau, a Hoi An specialty, and some fresh spring rolls. Everything was bursting with flavor, a testament to the skill and passion of the chefs.

The magic of Hoi An lies not just in its ancient architecture, but in the way it embraces the present, creating a vibrant tapestry of life that captivates the soul.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to the Sunset View Point, eager to witness the spectacle that everyone had been raving about. We found a spot along the Thu Bon River, where the water mirrored the sky, creating a breathtaking panorama of color. As the sun began its descent, the sky transformed into a canvas of fiery oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples. It was a truly magical moment, one that I'll cherish for years to come. I was so glad Hans was there to experience it with me.

I couldn't help but think of my daughter, Kati, back in Leipzig. She would have loved this view, the vibrant colors, and the energy of the crowd. I made a mental note to find a beautiful sunset print to bring back for her. Maybe it will inspire her to embark on her own travel adventures someday.
For dinner, we decided on Song thanh Riverside Restaurant, drawn in by its cozy riverside setting and the promise of delicious food. We weren't disappointed. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the food was simply outstanding. We enjoyed some fresh seafood, grilled to perfection, while watching the boats drift along the river. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

After dinner, we couldn't resist a nightcap at Soul Kitchen. The bar had a laid-back, bohemian vibe, with live music and a friendly crowd. We sipped on some local cocktails, enjoying the cool evening breeze and reflecting on the day's adventures. Soul Kitchen is located on An Bang Beach, and I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to sit there during the day, watching the waves crash against the shore.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Hadana Boutique Resort Hoi An, the town was aglow with lanterns, casting a warm and inviting light on everything. It was a scene straight out of a fairy tale, and I felt so grateful to be experiencing it with Hans. Even though we've been married for over 20 years, there’s something special about exploring new places together, a shared sense of wonder that keeps our relationship fresh and exciting.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit The Timeless Hoi An and experience the Hoi An Ecotour. I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating town, and perhaps even trying my hand at some traditional crafts. And of course, I'll be on the lookout for more photo opportunities, eager to capture the essence of Hoi An's golden hues.
Reflecting on the day, I realize that Hoi An is more than just a pretty town; it's a place that nourishes the soul. The combination of ancient history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty creates an atmosphere that is both captivating and inspiring. It's a place where you can slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with yourself and the world around you. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place with the one I love.
I am also excited to share that Italian cuisine may be added to UNESCO's 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' list. It would be wonderful to see another culture recognized for its culinary traditions. Perhaps one day, Estonian cuisine will also receive such recognition. In the meantime, I'll continue to explore the world, one dish and one sunset at a time.
