A Day of Ancient Echoes

Today was a journey into the heart of Hoi An's captivating past. Immersing myself in the town’s history and culture, I explored ancient houses, savored local cuisine, and discovered hidden gems that whispered stories of generations past. It was a day of stepping back in time, feeling the pulse of this enchanting town, and creating memories that will forever be etched in my heart.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Little Faifo Restaurant. The restaurant is located a short distance from the Japanese Bridge on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street. The charming café is cozy and intimate, with a lovely outdoor seating area. I enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese coffee while Hans opted for a hearty bowl of Pho. Sipping my coffee, I gazed out at the bustling streets, feeling the energy of Hoi An awaken around me. Little Faifo is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and fusion dishes. It is also known for it's friendly and attentive service. It's a charming café in the heart of Hoi An. The restaurant is set in a 200-year-old house.

Our first stop was the Old House of Tan Ky. This remarkably well-preserved house has stood for over two centuries, offering a glimpse into the lives of the merchant families who once thrived here. The house reflects a unique blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese architectural styles. As we wandered through the rooms, I was struck by the intricate details and the sense of history that permeated every corner. The house is warm in the winter and cool in the summer because of the materials used. The main materials used are rare wood, rocks and floor tiles.

The Old House of Tan Ky is one of the oldest and best-preserved private houses in Hoi An. The house has remained largely unchanged in the 200 years since it was built. The house is packed with various beautiful antiques.

To walk through these homes is to walk through the very pages of history, each room a chapter, each artifact a sentence, telling the story of Hoi An's enduring spirit.

Next, we ventured to the Diep Dong Nguyen House. This house, built in the late 19th century for a wealthy Chinese merchant, felt like stepping into another era. The front room was once a dispensary for Chinese medicine, with glass-enclosed cases lining the walls. The house is owned by the Diep family, which originates from Canton in Southern China. The house is filled with ancient antiquities, including currencies, ceramics, and paintings.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Cao Cao Grasshopper, a restaurant known for its authentic local dishes. I decided to try the Cao Lau, a regional specialty consisting of thick rice noodles, slices of pork, greens, and crispy croutons in a flavorful broth. Hans opted for the Mi Quang, another local favorite. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. I found myself reflecting on how much I enjoy the Vietnamese cuisine, especially when it is enjoyed in the very place it originated.

After lunch, we strolled through the streets and stopped at Lotus Leaf Fine Arts & Jewellery. I had read about this place and was eager to see their unique jewelry. The store is run by Hoa Luu Van and his wife. They sell creations from different metals and materials. The store employs people with disabilities. I was captivated by the intricate designs and the story behind each piece. I ended up purchasing a delicate silver ring with a lotus flower, a perfect reminder of our time in Hoi An.
