Day 1: Hoi An's Ancient Charm: A First Day of Discovery
Immerse yourself in Hoi An's culture, art, and flavors on day one, exploring ancient streets and savoring Vietnamese cuisine.
A Warm Welcome to Hoi An
After our long journey from Leipzig, Hans and I finally arrived in Hoi An, ready to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site. The anticipation had been building for months, and stepping onto the lantern-lit streets felt like entering a living postcard. December in Hoi An promised a blend of cultural immersion and relaxation, exactly what we needed. The air was pleasantly cool, a welcome change from the German winter, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 22°C. We were ready to dive into the heart of this ancient town.
Our first order of business was checking into the Hadana Boutique Resort Hoi An. The resort was a charming blend of modern comfort and traditional Vietnamese architecture, providing a tranquil haven amidst the bustling town. After settling in, we set out to explore Hoi An Ancient Town, eager to soak in its history and atmosphere.

The ancient town was a maze of narrow streets lined with centuries-old buildings, each telling a story of Hoi An's rich past. The architecture was a captivating mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences, reflecting the town's history as a major trading port from the 15th to the 19th century. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes adorned the streets, casting a warm and inviting glow, even during the day. As we wandered, the sounds of scooters and chattering locals created a vibrant backdrop to our exploration.
Hoi An is a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to savor every moment and appreciate the beauty of its cultural heritage.
For breakfast, we ventured to HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant, enticed by its promise of authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant was located a stone’s throw away from the Ancient Town, making it easily accessible. We enjoyed a delicious spread of local delicacies, including Cao Lau and White Rose dumplings, fueling ourselves for the day's adventures. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, with a cozy ambiance that made us feel right at home.

Next on our list was the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum, a place I had read about extensively before our trip. Founded by French photographer Réhahn, the museum showcased the diverse ethnic groups of Vietnam through stunning portraits and traditional costumes. The gallery offered a unique glimpse into the lives and cultures of these communities, many of whom live in remote and isolated areas. I was particularly moved by the stories behind each photograph, learning about the challenges and triumphs of these resilient people. Hans, with his architect's eye, was fascinated by the intricate details of the traditional costumes and the craftsmanship involved.

After immersing ourselves in the art and culture of Vietnam, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Reaching Out Arts & Crafts. This social enterprise supports artisans with disabilities, providing them with opportunities to create beautiful handmade products. We purchased a few unique souvenirs, knowing that our money was going towards a worthy cause. The shop had a peaceful and calming atmosphere, and it was inspiring to see the artisans at work, their faces filled with pride and determination.

Lunchtime found us at Madam Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant, a spot recommended for its authentic Vietnamese dishes and charming ambiance. The restaurant was located on Lantern Street, offering panoramic views of the Thu Bon River and the iconic Japanese Bridge. We savored a variety of local specialties, including Hoi An beef pho and shrimp and meat spring rolls, all bursting with flavor and freshness. The view from the balcony was simply breathtaking, watching the boats glide along the river, carrying tourists eager to experience the magic of Hoi An.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to The Shamrock Irish Pub Hoi An for a refreshing drink. While it might seem out of place to visit an Irish pub in Vietnam, we were curious to experience this unique cultural fusion. The pub had a lively atmosphere, with live music and a friendly crowd. Hans enjoyed a pint of Guinness, while I opted for a local beer. It was a fun and unexpected way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we chose Morning Glory Original, a restaurant renowned for its authentic Hoi An street food and traditional Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity. We sampled a variety of local delicacies, including crispy pancakes (Banh Xeo) and white rose dumplings, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of sweet, sour, and spicy. It was a culinary journey that tantalized our taste buds and left us craving more.

As the evening drew to a close, we strolled through the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An Ancient Town, soaking in the magical atmosphere. The town was even more enchanting at night, with the lanterns casting a warm and romantic glow. We stopped to admire the Japanese Covered Bridge, a symbol of Hoi An's heritage, beautifully illuminated against the night sky.
Reflecting on our first day in Hoi An, I felt a sense of gratitude and excitement. We had immersed ourselves in the town's rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. From exploring ancient streets to savoring local delicacies, every moment had been a feast for the senses. And as we prepared for our adventures tomorrow, which include a visit to the Hoi An Village Experience and the Cam Thanh Rice Fields, I knew that our journey was just beginning.
Tomorrow promises a deeper dive into the local culture with a visit to a traditional village and the serene Cam Thanh Rice Fields. I'm particularly excited about the cooking class at Red Dragon Restaurant, where I hope to learn the secrets behind authentic Vietnamese cuisine. And of course, no day is complete without exploring the local shops; tomorrow we'll be visiting Hoi An Old Town (Shopping Street) to find some unique treasures. I'm also looking forward to trying Orivy Hoi An Local Food Restaurant for breakfast and Lim Dining Room for dinner. It's going to be another day filled with discovery and delicious food!
“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” - Aldous Huxley. I feel this quote encapsulates my experience today, where every corner turned revealed something new and challenged my preconceived notions.
Back at the hotel, I realized I had forgotten my rain jacket, hopefully the weather will be on our side tomorrow! Hans reminded me that we also forgot the power adapter, so we need to remember to purchase that tomorrow. Despite these minor setbacks, I couldn't help but smile. Hoi An had already captured my heart, and I knew that the days to come would be filled with even more unforgettable experiences.
