Exploring the Mystical Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 4: Snaefellsnes Peninsula: A Day of Geological Wonders and Mineral Springs
Explore the Snaefellsnes Peninsula's basalt columns and rejuvenating mineral springs, a day of natural beauty and Icelandic charm.
Echoes of Ancient Lava and Refreshing Springs
Today was a day of geological marvels and natural refreshment on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Hans and I set out early, eager to explore the famed basalt columns of Gerðuberg and the revitalizing waters of Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to witness the Earth's artistry and feel a connection to its ancient past.
Discover the stunning Gerðuberg Cliffs, with their iconic basalt columns and breathtaking views, a must-see destination on your Icelandic adventure.
Our first stop was Hlaðan Veitingahús for breakfast in Ólafsvík. It was a cozy little place. After a hearty meal, we were ready to start our adventure.
The drive to Gerðuberg Cliffs was scenic, with the Icelandic landscape unfolding before us like a living painting. The weather was kind, a gentle breeze and overcast skies, perfect for a day of exploration. As we approached the cliffs, I could see the symmetrical basalt columns rising dramatically from the earth. It felt like we were approaching an ancient fortress wall.
Nature's architecture is often more stunning than anything humans can create.
The Gerðuberg Cliffs are truly a sight to behold. These hexagonal basalt columns are spread across half a kilometer, a testament to Iceland's volcanic past. Formed thousands of years ago during an eruption, the flowing basaltic lava cooled rapidly by the sea, creating these unique pillar shapes. Hans, with his architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the geometric symmetry of the columns. He kept pointing out the perfect angles and the way the light played across the stone. I, on the other hand, was busy trying to capture the perfect photograph, wanting to freeze this moment in time. We walked along the base of the cliffs, marveling at the sheer scale and precision of nature's artistry. It's incredible to think that something so geometrically perfect could be formed by natural processes. After spending a good hour at Gerðuberg, we continued our journey towards Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring. Along the way, we stopped at Samkaup in Ólafsvík to pick up some snacks for the road. It's always a good idea to have something on hand, especially when exploring the Icelandic countryside. I made a mental note to buy a portable charger when we get back to Leipzig; my phone battery was already starting to dwindle from all the photos I'd been taking.
Experience the natural beauty and historical significance of Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring, a hidden gem in the heart of Iceland's landscapes.
Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring was a different kind of experience altogether. Tucked away along the Snæfellsnesvegur, the spring is a serene spot known for its refreshing mineral waters. As we arrived, the air was filled with the scent of the earth and a hint of something metallic. We followed a small path to the spring, where a simple pump stood ready to dispense the water. The water at Ölkelduvatn is said to have various health benefits, and I was eager to try it. Hans and I took turns pumping the water into our reusable bottles. The water was cold and tasted strongly of minerals, with a slight fizz. It was definitely different from any water I've ever tasted, a bit like very strong carbonated water without the bubbles. I could feel an immediate sense of invigoration after just a few sips. It's no wonder this spring has been a vital water source for early settlers. We sat by the spring for a while, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. The landscape was dotted with wildflowers, and the only sounds were the gentle breeze and the occasional bleating of sheep. It was a perfect moment of peace and connection with nature. I closed my eyes and imagined what it must have been like for the early Icelanders, relying on this spring for their survival. It gave me a profound sense of respect for the land and its resources. For lunch, we stopped at Agnið streetfood in Ólafsvík. I had heard great things about their fish tacos, and I was not disappointed. The fish was fresh and flavorful, and the tacos were the perfect quick bite to keep us going. Hans opted for a burger, which he declared was one of the best he's had in a long time. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was a great spot to refuel before continuing our adventure.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back towards our accommodation, reflecting on the incredible sights we had seen. The Snaefellsnes Peninsula continues to surprise and enchant me. The combination of geological wonders and natural springs makes it a truly unique and special place. I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring, with plans to visit Dagverðará River and Súgandisey Island Lighthouse. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today and the refreshing taste of Icelandic mineral water. For dinner, we decided to try Sjávarkjallarinn back in Ólafsvík. The seafood was incredible, and the cozy atmosphere was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore the Dagverðará River and the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse. I am excited to see what other hidden gems the peninsula holds.
Discover the enchanting Snaefellsnes Peninsula with its stunning landscapes and cultural heritage, a perfect Icelandic adventure for couples.
