Chasing the Northern Light: A Day at Tahkuna

As I sit down to write about today's adventures, a sense of calm washes over me, much like the gentle waves I witnessed crashing against the shores of Hiiumaa. Today was all about embracing the serene beauty of the island's northern reaches, a journey that took us to the iconic Tahkuna lighthouse and the tranquil shores of Tahkuna Paradiisirand. It was a day filled with history, stunning vistas, and the simple joys of spending time with my family.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at iiUmekk Resto & Külalistemaja. The reviews I'd read online had promised a treat, and they were spot on. The restaurant, nestled in Orjaku küla, offered a rich and varied breakfast that set the perfect tone for our day. You could taste the passion they put into cooking and the friendly service made us feel right at home. The location offered a beautiful seaside view. After fueling up, we set our sights on the northernmost point of Hiiumaa: the Tahkuna Peninsula.

The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads cutting through lush forests and glimpses of the sparkling sea. As we approached the Tahkuna lighthouse, its towering form became visible, a stark and striking contrast against the surrounding greenery. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation as we parked the car and made our way towards the historic structure.

The Tahkuna lighthouse is more than just a navigational aid; it's a symbol of Hiiumaa's rich maritime history. Built in 1875, its prefabricated cast-iron structure, designed by Alexander Gordon, was quite innovative for its time. Standing at 42.7 meters, it is the tallest lighthouse of its kind in Estonia. As someone who appreciates history and architecture, I found myself marveling at the lighthouse's intricate design and the stories it held within its walls. Hans, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the engineering aspects, pointing out the clever use of cast iron and the elegant spiral staircase that wound its way to the top.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places, where history and nature intertwine to create something truly magical.

We climbed the metal spiral staircase, each step bringing us closer to the panoramic views that awaited us at the top. Kati, our daughter, was a bit apprehensive about the lacy lattice floor of the outer circular balcony, but the stunning vista quickly put her at ease. From our vantage point, we could see the vast expanse of the Baltic Sea, the rugged coastline of Hiiumaa, and the endless green of the surrounding forests. It was a breathtaking sight that reminded me of the raw, untamed beauty of this island.

I couldn't help but reflect on my own connection to Estonia as I gazed out at the sea. Growing up in Võru, I always felt a deep sense of belonging to this land, a connection to its history and its people. Being here on Hiiumaa, surrounded by its natural beauty, only strengthened that feeling. I shared some stories of my childhood with Hans and Kati, painting a picture of a simpler time, filled with outdoor adventures and a deep appreciation for nature.

After descending from the lighthouse, we decided to explore Tahkuna Paradiisirand, a nearby beach known for its pristine sands and tranquil atmosphere. As we walked along the shore, the cool breeze carried the scent of pine and the sound of the waves provided a soothing soundtrack. Kati, ever the beachcomber, was soon collecting seashells and smooth, colorful stones, while Hans and I simply enjoyed the peace and quiet.

The beach was relatively deserted, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural surroundings. I dipped my toes in the refreshing water, feeling a jolt of energy as the coldness awakened my senses. We found a secluded spot and sat down, watching as the waves gently lapped against the shore. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

For lunch, we opted for a casual meal at Kao Thai. I was intrigued by the blend of Thai cuisine in the heart of Hiiumaa. The reviews were great, many calling it authentic. Apparently, the restaurant is run by a Thai woman and her Estonian husband. I love stories like that! The food was delicious, with the fragrant spices and vibrant flavors transporting us to Southeast Asia. It was a delightful culinary experience that added a unique twist to our day of exploration.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to make our way back towards our accommodation, but not before stopping for dinner and a drink at Rannu pubi in Käina. This cozy pub is known for its friendly service and traditional Estonian dishes. It seemed like the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I tried the local beer, while Hans opted for a hearty pork dish. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with locals and tourists alike sharing stories and laughter. It was a fitting end to a day that had been filled with so much beauty and discovery.

One of the most poignant sights near the Tahkuna lighthouse is the monument dedicated to the children who perished in the Estonia shipwreck. The memorial, designed by Mati Karmin, serves as a somber reminder of the tragic event that shook the Baltic Sea in 1994. Being at the closest point in Estonia to the site of the accident, the monument is a place for reflection and remembrance. It was a sobering moment, and I found myself holding Kati a little closer as we paid our respects.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Hiiumaa with my family. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding, creating lasting memories and strengthening the bonds that tie us together. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which will take us to the Ristna lighthouse and the Ristna Suudlemise Peatus, and a shop at Vokk ja Viipsik. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of today, the beacon of Tahkuna shining brightly in my mind.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at a local shop to pick up some essentials. Of course, I couldn't resist browsing the shelves for some local crafts and souvenirs. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, a perfect reminder of our time on Hiiumaa. It's these little mementos that help me relive the memories of our travels long after we've returned home.

As we drove back, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The fields seemed to shimmer in the fading light, and the trees cast long, dancing shadows. It was a scene of such serene beauty that I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over me. Hiiumaa has a way of capturing your heart, of making you feel like you've stepped into a different world, a world where time slows down and the simple things in life take on a new significance.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Hiiumaa's western wonders, including the Ristna lighthouse and the intriguing Ristna Suudlemise Peatus. But tonight, I'll drift off to sleep with the sound of the waves in my ears and the image of the Tahkuna lighthouse etched in my mind. This island has a way of weaving its magic into your soul, and I am grateful for every moment we've spent here.

And, as a little insider tip, I found out that the Sõru Jazz festival is happening here on Hiiumaa between June 12-15! Perhaps we will need to extend our trip to enjoy some local Jazz music!

I also noted that there is a POP-UP market with products from Hiiumaa at Tormi Konsum, which may be worth checking out tomorrow!

Now, as the day comes to a close, I'm filled with a sense of peace and gratitude. Hiiumaa has a way of slowing down time, allowing you to fully appreciate the simple joys of life. I'm eager for what tomorrow holds, but for now, I'll cherish the memories of today, the beacon of Tahkuna forever shining in my heart.
