Hiiumaa's Heartbeat: Culture, Crafts, and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of diving deeper into the heart of Hiiumaa, exploring its cultural heritage and savoring local flavors. With my family by my side, I set out to uncover the stories woven into the island's landscape, from the Kassari Museum House to the Vaemla villavabrik, and the tastes that define its culinary scene. It was a day filled with discovery, connection, and the simple joys of island life.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at PANNKOOGIMAJA in Kärdla. The aroma of freshly made pancakes filled the air, a comforting scent that reminded me of my childhood in Võru. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a stack of delicious pancakes. Kati opted for a classic sweet pancake with berries, while Hans chose a savory one filled with local cheese and ham. I decided on a traditional Estonian pancake with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of sugar. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.
After breakfast, we drove to Kassari, a small island connected to Hiiumaa by a narrow isthmus. Our first stop was the Kassari Museum House, a limestone building that once served as the steward's house of the Kassari Manor. As we stepped inside, we were transported back in time, immersed in the daily life and activities of the island's inhabitants. The permanent exhibition, aptly named 'Life on the island. Fire, water, air, earth,' offered a glimpse into the past, showcasing the resourcefulness and resilience of the Hiiumaa people.

The museum was filled with artifacts and exhibits that told the story of the island's history, from its early settlements to its more recent past. I was particularly fascinated by the displays on traditional fishing techniques, which highlighted the close relationship between the islanders and the sea. Kati was drawn to the exhibits on local crafts, admiring the intricate patterns and designs of the traditional textiles. Hans, ever the history buff, spent his time poring over the old maps and documents, tracing the island's evolution over the centuries. The museum shop was a treasure trove of local handicrafts and souvenirs, and we couldn't resist picking up a few mementos to remind us of our visit.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
Leaving the Kassari Museum House, we drove to Vaemla, a village known for its villavabrik, or wool factory. The Vaemla villavabrik is a family-owned business that has been producing wool products since 1992. Housed in a building that dates back to 1841, the factory is a living museum, showcasing the traditional methods of wool processing. As we entered the factory, we were greeted by the sight of ancient machines whirring and clanking, transforming raw wool into yarn and textiles. The air was thick with the scent of lanolin, a natural oil found in sheep's wool, adding to the authentic atmosphere.

We watched in fascination as the workers guided the wool through the various stages of production, from carding to spinning to weaving. It was a mesmerizing process, a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the Hiiumaa people. Kati was particularly interested in the weaving process, marveling at the intricate patterns that emerged from the loom. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the efficiency of the machines, which had been lovingly restored and maintained by the Valdma family.
After the villavabrik, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling lunchtime. We headed to Masala in Kärdla, a restaurant recommended by a local we met at the museum. Masala promised a taste of Asia in the heart of Hiiumaa, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant's decor was a fusion of Asian and Estonian styles, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The menu was a mix of familiar Asian dishes and local specialties, offering something for everyone.

Kati, always adventurous, ordered the sushi, while Hans opted for a classic curry. I decided to try the Tom Kha Gai, a coconut soup with chicken and galangal, which was absolutely delicious. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a welcome change from the traditional Estonian cuisine we had been eating. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was a delightful culinary experience that transported us to another world, if only for a brief moment.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in some relaxation at the Paradise Beach Bar Hiiumaa. Situated right on the sandy shore, this bar was the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the island vibes. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the gentle breeze carried the scent of saltwater and pine trees. We ordered some refreshing cocktails and settled into the comfortable lounge chairs, watching the waves crash against the shore. Kati, ever the social butterfly, struck up a conversation with a group of local surfers, while Hans and I simply enjoyed the peace and quiet. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

For dinner, we chose Ungru resto & külalismaja. Nestled by the sea, the restaurant exuded an inviting atmosphere. The blend of traditional Hiiumaa flavors with modern culinary techniques was a delight. We started with smoked goat cheese from a local farm, followed by organic beef tartare. The juniper-smoked crème brûlée was the perfect ending to our meal. The use of local ingredients and the restaurant's commitment to showcasing the island's culinary heritage made it a memorable dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, we drove back to our guesthouse, reflecting on the day's adventures. We had explored the cultural heritage of Kassari, witnessed the craftsmanship of Vaemla, savored the flavors of Asia and Estonia, and relaxed on the beach. It was a day that had deepened our connection to Hiiumaa, revealing its hidden gems and showcasing its unique charm.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Suuremõisa mansion and explore its surrounding park. I'm particularly excited to learn about the history of the mansion and its role in the island's past. We'll also be stopping by Käsitöömaja, a local craft shop, to pick up some souvenirs and support the local artisans. And of course, we'll be indulging in more of Hiiumaa's culinary delights, with breakfast at Cafe Gahwa, lunch at Mamma Mia Pizzeria Italiana & Guesthouse, and dinner at Ambrosia Kreeka Kohvik & Grill. It promises to be another day of discovery, connection, and the simple joys of island life. As I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful island with my family. Hiiumaa, you have captured my heart.
I'm reminded of a quote I once read, which perfectly encapsulates my feelings about this trip:
To travel is to take a journey into yourself.
And what a journey it has been so far. Good night from Hiiumaa!
