Discovering Florence's Hidden Gems

Today was a day of exploring the soul of Florence, venturing beyond the usual tourist trails to discover hidden corners and stories etched in stone and art. With Kati and Hans by my side, I set out to immerse ourselves in the city's rich tapestry of culture and history. It was a day of quiet contemplation, vibrant encounters, and delicious discoveries – a true Florentine experience.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Logò Ristorante. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect start to a day of exploration. We savored traditional Italian pastries and planned our itinerary, eager to uncover Florence's hidden gems.

Museo di San Marco: A Spiritual Journey

The first stop on our Florentine adventure was the Museo di San Marco. This museum, once a Dominican monastery, is home to the breathtaking frescoes of Fra Angelico. As we stepped inside, a sense of tranquility washed over us. The winter light filtered through the windows, illuminating the serene faces of the monks depicted on the walls.

I was particularly moved by Fra Angelico's *Annunciation*. The delicate brushstrokes and the vibrant colors brought the scene to life, filling the room with a sense of divine grace. Kati, with her keen eye for art, was fascinated by the details in each fresco, while Hans appreciated the architectural harmony of the space. We wandered through the cells, each adorned with its own unique masterpiece, lost in contemplation and awe.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Visiting the Museo di San Marco felt like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the monks who once dwelled within these walls. The museum also houses the cells of Girolamo Savonarola, a prominent figure in Florentine history. It was humbling to stand in the very rooms where he lived and preached, reflecting on his impact on the city.

Piazza della Repubblica: A Vibrant Heart

Leaving the tranquility of San Marco, we headed to Piazza della Repubblica, the bustling heart of Florence. The contrast was striking – from the quiet contemplation of the museum to the vibrant energy of the piazza. The carousel was spinning, children were laughing, and the air was filled with the aroma of roasted chestnuts.

We strolled through the piazza, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the grand architecture. Kati was drawn to the street performers, while Hans enjoyed watching the people go by. I couldn't resist the temptation of a warm, crusty chestnut, its smoky flavor a perfect complement to the crisp winter air. I remember similar squares back home in Võru, Estonia, though none quite as grand as this.

It seems that January 6th is also the day of La Befana, when gifts are exchanged marking the end of holiday festivities. La Befana is an aged, witch-like woman, who knows which children have been good or bad throughout the year. I learned that events involving the Befana, with broom and black head scarf, took place around Tuscany. There was even a Befana parade of vintage cars leaving the Cascine Park at 10:30 am, giving gifts to traffic cops (vigili urbani) along a route that ended in Piazza Santa Maria Novella at 12 noon, where children were the recipients of her generosity. La Befana also made a landing in Piazza della Repubblica on January 6 at 11:30 am to deliver candy and desserts to waiting kids. While that happened a few days ago, it was still nice to see the remnants of the holiday spirit lingering in the air.

Synagogue and Jewish Museum of Florence: A Journey Through History

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring Florence's Jewish heritage, with a visit to the Synagogue and Jewish Museum. Located a bit outside the main tourist area, the synagogue's impressive dome stood out against the Florentine skyline. The building's exterior, with its unique blend of Moorish and Florentine architectural styles, was a sight to behold.

Inside, we were transported back in time as we learned about the history of the Jewish community in Florence. The museum's exhibits showcased beautiful artifacts, religious objects, and historical documents, offering a glimpse into the lives and traditions of Florentine Jews throughout the centuries. The intricate details of the synagogue's interior, from the stained-glass windows to the ornate decorations, were truly remarkable.

Kati was particularly interested in the stories of resilience and perseverance, while Hans, with his architectural background, admired the building's design and construction. I found myself reflecting on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting understanding and respect among different communities.

Mio Concept Store: A Shopper's Paradise

Before dinner, we decided to do a little shopping. We stumbled upon Mio Concept Store on Via della Spada, a boutique that specializes in artisan-made goods by Florentine designers and artists. The store was a treasure trove of unique and quirky souvenirs, from bespoke jewelry to handcrafted journals.

Kati immediately gravitated towards the jewelry, while Hans admired the artwork. I was drawn to the store's commitment to sustainability, with many of the products made from recycled materials. I ended up purchasing a beautiful scarf made from locally sourced wool, a perfect reminder of our Florentine adventure. It reminded me of some of the craft shops back in Võru, where local artisans pour their hearts into creating unique and sustainable products.

A Culinary Finale at Il Palagio

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Il Palagio for a memorable dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant, nestled within the Four Seasons Hotel Florence, offered an exquisite culinary experience. The ambiance was elegant and refined, with impeccable service and a menu that showcased the best of Tuscan cuisine.

We savored each course, from the delicate appetizers to the succulent main dishes. The flavors were complex and harmonious, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. Hans and I shared a bottle of Tuscan wine, its rich and fruity notes complementing the meal perfectly. Kati, ever the adventurous foodie, tried a new dessert, declaring it the perfect end to a perfect day. The atmosphere was amazing, and the high quality ingredients created a culinary experience that we won't soon forget. The service was impeccable and the ambiance refined.

The weather in Florence has been quite mild for January, with temperatures hovering around 10°C during the day, but as the sun set, the temperature dropped, and a chill filled the air. We were grateful for our warm coats and scarves as we strolled back to Hotel Medici, our hearts full of memories and our stomachs full of delicious food.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, Loggia dei Lanzi, and Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, before enjoying a drink at Antico Caffè del Moro - Art Bar Firenze. It's hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end, but I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Reflections on a Florentine Day

Today was a reminder of the beauty and richness that Florence has to offer. From the spiritual art of San Marco to the vibrant energy of Piazza della Repubblica, from the historical insights of the Synagogue to the culinary delights of Il Palagio, every moment was a feast for the senses. As we prepare to bid farewell to this enchanting city, I am filled with gratitude for the memories we have created and the experiences we have shared. Florence, you have captured our hearts, and we will carry your spirit with us wherever we go.

It's been a wonderful trip with my family, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with them. As a translator, I often work with words, but travel allows me to experience life in a way that transcends language. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure!

I'm also glad I remembered to pack my essentials, though I did forget my travel adapter. Luckily, I was able to purchase one here in Florence. It's a small thing, but it's a reminder that even the most organized traveler can forget something!
