A Fond Farewell to Florence

As our final day in Florence drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. This city, with its rich history and captivating art, had woven its way into our hearts. But, ever the optimists, Hans, Kati and I were determined to make the most of our last day, soaking in as much Florentine culture as possible before our journey back to Leipzig.

Our day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Murales Bistro', a charming spot I'd read about, known for its artistic touch and delicious offerings. I opted for the *uova in camicia al tartufo* – poached eggs with truffles on a bed of mashed potatoes and toasted sesame, a truly indulgent way to start the day. Hans enjoyed a simple yet satisfying pastry, while Kati went for the *crocchetta di pappa al pomodoro*, a tomato bread croquette with pesto and stracciatella. The bistro itself was a visual treat, with colorful murals adorning the walls, setting a cheerful tone for our final day of exploration.

Fueled and ready, we made our way to the Florence Academy of Fine Arts. I've always been fascinated by the meticulous training that goes into classical art, and I was eager to see where many artists hone their skills. The Academy was impressive, housed in a former customs house with soaring ceilings and north-lit classrooms, the perfect environment for studying the techniques of the Old Masters. While we didn't see any Rembrandts in the making, it was inspiring to witness the dedication and focus of the students. I was particularly struck by the emphasis on core skills like drawing and anatomy, a testament to the enduring importance of foundational knowledge in art.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of observation and reflection.

Next on our list was the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery that has witnessed centuries of Florentine history. As we strolled through the Piazza della Signoria, the Loggia's imposing arches came into view, framing a collection of Renaissance and Roman sculptures. I was particularly drawn to Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa, a dramatic bronze statue that seemed to embody the city's turbulent past. Hans, ever the history buff, recounted the Loggia's origins as a platform for public ceremonies and assemblies, a symbol of civic pride and political power. Kati, meanwhile, was busy snapping photos of Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women, marveling at the sculptor's ability to capture such dynamic movement in marble. The Loggia dei Lanzi is more than just a collection of statues; it's a living testament to Florence's artistic and political heritage.

Our exploration continued with a visit to the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, a stunning example of the city's religious and artistic history. As we approached the basilica, I was struck by its distinctive façade, a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Leon Battista Alberti's contribution to the upper part of the façade, with its inlaid green and white marble, was particularly striking. Inside, the basilica was equally impressive, with soaring vaulted ceilings and a wealth of art treasures. We admired frescoes by masters of Gothic and early Renaissance, each telling a story of faith and patronage. I found myself particularly drawn to the crucifix by Giotto, a monumental work that seemed to fill the nave with a sense of reverence. The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is not only a place of worship but also a museum of Florentine art and history, a testament to the city's enduring cultural legacy.

Lunchtime found us at Ristorante Oliviero 1962, a gem I discovered during my pre-trip research. The restaurant exudes a classic Florentine charm, with its warm lighting and attentive service. We started with the *Sbriciolona tagliata al coltello e burrata al tartufo*, a Tuscan salami with truffle burrata, which was an absolute delight. For our main courses, Hans opted for the *Filetto di manzo alla Rossini*, while Kati and I shared the *Pici freschi con lardo di colonnata in salsa di pomodorini e polpo*. Each dish was a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and traditional Florentine flavors. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax and reflect on our Florentine adventure. Blessing S., who visited here in January, also had a great experience.

As the day wound down, we sought refuge in Antico Caffè del Moro - Art Bar Firenze, a quirky little spot near Santa Maria Novella. The bar's walls were adorned with an eclectic collection of artwork, creating a bohemian atmosphere that was both inviting and inspiring. We ordered a round of their famous fruit-based cocktails, each one a vibrant concoction of fresh ingredients and artistic flair. As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our favorite moments from the trip, reminiscing about the Duomo's breathtaking views, the Uffizi Gallery's artistic treasures, and the Ponte Vecchio's romantic charm. The bar was filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all drawn to its lively atmosphere and creative spirit. It was the perfect place to say *arrivederci* to Florence, a city that had captured our hearts with its beauty, history, and charm.

Our Florentine adventure has come to an end, but the memories we've made will last a lifetime. As we prepare to return to Leipzig, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to have shared this experience with my family. Florence, with its art, history, and culinary delights, has left an indelible mark on our hearts. And who knows, perhaps we'll return someday to explore even more of this enchanting city.

Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and it's with a mix of emotions that I look forward to returning home. While I'll miss the vibrant streets and artistic treasures of Florence, I'm also eager to get back to our cozy apartment in Leipzig, to resume my translation work, and to share our travel stories with friends and family. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of taking time to explore the world, to immerse ourselves in different cultures, and to create lasting memories with loved ones. And as I reflect on our Florentine adventure, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the lessons we've learned. Until next time, *arrivederci* from Florence!

Safe travels everyone!
