A Day of Fjords, Hands, and Heartfelt Memories
Today was a day of breathtaking beauty and poignant reflection as we explored the natural wonders and artistic expressions around Puerto Natales. It’s amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you’re surrounded by such inspiring scenery. From the tranquil waters of the Canal de las Montañas, every moment was a feast for the senses and a balm for the soul.

Our day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Dino Rex. I opted for the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, while David enjoyed his usual strong coffee and toast. Aina, ever the health enthusiast, chose a fruit salad with yogurt. Fueled up, we set off for our morning adventure: a boat trip through the famed Canal de las Montañas.
The meeting point was at Hermann Eberhard 560. As the catamaran glided through the waters, the sheer scale of the landscape was humbling. Towering mountains flanked either side of the canal, their peaks shrouded in mist, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I could see why this place is also known as the Channel of the Mountains.
The cruise took us deep into the heart of the Kawésqar National Park, where we were treated to the sight of five magnificent glaciers. The Zamudio, Bernal, Herman, Alsina, and Paredes glaciers cascaded down from the Cordillera Sarmiento, their icy blue hues contrasting sharply with the dark rock. It was a stark reminder of the power and fragility of nature. The boat paused at each glacier, allowing us ample time to take photos and simply absorb the awe-inspiring views. Sipping on the provided whisky, juice, and coffee on board, we felt incredibly fortunate to witness such splendor.
Nature's beauty is a powerful reminder of what we must protect.
Back on solid ground, with sea legs still adjusting, we headed to Khanpai Comida Asiática for lunch. I was initially a little hesitant about having Asian food in Patagonia, but the reviews were too tempting to ignore. We shared a selection of sushi rolls and a flavorful teriyaki chicken dish. The fusion of fresh, local ingredients with Asian flavors was surprisingly delightful. Aina was particularly impressed with the sashimi.
Our next stop was La Mano, the iconic hand sculpture emerging from the earth. It’s located a short walk northeast of the tourist information center. Created in 1993 by Juan Andrade, with the help of the local community, this sculpture is a replica of the work of Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal. This particular sculpture serves as a reminder of humanity’s connection to the environment. I found myself deeply moved by the symbolism of the hand, reaching out as if to grasp the very essence of Patagonia. David and Aina were equally captivated, and we spent a good while taking photos and contemplating its meaning.

After our artistic interlude, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Factoria Tienda de Souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a special memento to remind me of our Patagonian adventure. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and artisanal products. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted scarf made from merino wool, its vibrant colors reflecting the hues of the Patagonian landscape. Aina found a lovely piece of jewelry crafted from local stones, while David picked up a book on the history of the region.

As evening approached, we made our way to Rustika Restobar for dinner. The restaurant’s cozy ambiance and rustic charm were immediately appealing. We started with a shared plate of empanadas, filled with savory meat and cheese. For my main course, I chose the grilled lamb, a Patagonian specialty. David opted for the seafood stew, while Aina, ever adventurous, tried the reineta fish. Every dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the freshness of the local ingredients.

The service at Rustika was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. They recommended a local red wine, which perfectly complemented our meal. As we savored our food and wine, we reminisced about the day’s adventures, laughing and sharing stories. It was one of those perfect travel moments, where everything just clicks into place.
Before heading back to Hotel Costaustralis, we took a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights of Puerto Natales. The town felt peaceful and welcoming, a perfect base for exploring the wonders of Patagonia. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had so far.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Puerto Natales itself, visiting the Muelle Historico and Plaza de Armas Arturo Prat. I am looking forward to delving deeper into the history and culture of this charming town. I'm also hoping we can squeeze in a visit to Baguales Brewpub for a taste of local craft beer – a perfect way to end another day of exploration!
As I reflect on today, I am struck by the diversity of experiences we’ve had, from the grandeur of the Canal de las Montañas to the simple pleasure of a delicious meal. It’s these contrasts that make travel so enriching, reminding us of the beauty and complexity of the world around us. And as I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring.
