A Day of Serenity by Lake Mývatn

Today was a day of gentle exploration around Lake Mývatn, a welcome change of pace after our more adventurous days. I was eager to discover the quieter corners of this region, and today's itinerary promised just that: peaceful walks, stunning views, and moments of reflection. It's amazing how a change of scenery can bring a fresh perspective, and I was ready to embrace the calm and beauty that Mývatn had to offer.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffi Borgir. The café is nestled in a scenic spot with a fantastic view over the lava formations of Dimmuborgir and Lake Mývatn. It’s run by a friendly family, and it’s the perfect place for a quick and delicious lunch. I opted for the grilled arctic char, a house specialty, served with potatoes and Geysir bread. It was a delicious start to the day, fueling us up for our explorations. The Geysir bread, a dark, slightly sweet rye bread, was a particular highlight, offering a taste of local Icelandic baking.

With our bellies full, we set off to Höfði, a beautiful peninsula on the shores of Lake Mývatn. As we entered through the gate at the parking lot, I was immediately struck by the lush greenery. It was a stark contrast to the volcanic landscapes we had seen earlier in the trip. I learned that the peninsula was once barren until the proprietor and his wife began planting thousands of trees and plants during their summer holidays, a labor of love that spanned decades. Their dedication transformed Höfði into the verdant paradise it is today, a testament to the power of perseverance and a deep connection to the land.

Walking along the paths, we were treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Mývatn and the surrounding areas. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the gentle lapping of the water against the shore. From the furthest point of Höfði, we could see the most beautiful lava pillars in Mývatn – the lava pillars of Kálfastrandavogar. The unusual lava formations offshore added a touch of drama to the serene landscape. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place, but as always, the pictures couldn't fully convey the feeling of being there, surrounded by such natural beauty.

The beauty of Mývatn lies not just in its dramatic landscapes, but in the quiet moments of reflection it inspires.

Next on our itinerary was Skútustaðir, an area known for its unique pseudocraters. These aren't true volcanic craters but were formed by gas explosions when boiling lava flowed over cool, wet surfaces about 2,300 years ago. As we approached, the landscape transformed once again, with rolling green hills dotted with these unusual formations. We parked the car and set out on foot, eager to explore these geological wonders up close.

The Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters are surrounded by lush greenery, offering excellent opportunities for walking and birdwatching. The area is part of the Lake Mývatn Nature Reserve, known for its rich birdlife. I spotted various species of ducks and other waterfowl nesting in the region, a reminder of the delicate balance of nature in this unique environment. The well-maintained walking paths allowed us to explore the pseudocraters while enjoying panoramic views of Lake Mývatn and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

As I walked around Skútustaðir, I couldn't help but marvel at the forces that had shaped this landscape. The pseudocraters, with their gently sloping sides and shallow depressions, seemed almost whimsical, as if a giant had playfully scattered them across the fields. I learned that the planet Mars has similar groups of craters that seem to have formed by steam explosions as glowing hot lava flowed over frozen ground. It’s fascinating to think that a landscape so close to home shares similarities with features on another planet.

For lunch, we stopped at Eldey Restaurant, located in Hotel Laxá. The restaurant emphasizes regional ingredients and carefully selects high-quality products. I decided to try the Arctic char again, prepared in a different style than at Kaffi Borgir. It was equally delicious, showcasing the versatility of this local fish. Priya opted for a vegetarian dish, and the restaurant was more than accommodating, highlighting their commitment to catering to all dietary needs.

In the evening, we decided to try Mylla Restaurant for dinner, located at Berjaya Myvatn Hotel. The menu offered a blend of Icelandic and European cuisine, and the warm environment was inviting. I chose a traditional Icelandic lamb dish, while Priya enjoyed a hearty vegetable soup. The meal was satisfying, and the service was excellent, making it a perfect end to a day of exploration.

After dinner, we ventured to Götubarinn for a nightcap. The bar is known for its friendly vibe and eclectic selection of beverages. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I tried a local craft beer, while the others enjoyed a variety of cocktails. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was a perfect way to experience the local nightlife and soak in the vibrant culture of Mývatn. I learned that Götubarinn is an iconic musical bar that has been bringing people together since 2009.

As I sit here tonight, writing about our day, I feel a sense of contentment. Mývatn has a way of slowing things down, of inviting you to appreciate the simple things in life. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Mývatn Research Station and Visit Mývatn, eager to learn more about the region's unique ecosystem. We'll have breakfast at Kvika Kaffi, lunch at Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn, and dinner at Daddi's Pizza. Before we leave, we'll stop by Krambúðin Reykjahlíð to pick up some souvenirs. It’s hard to believe that our adventure is coming to an end, but I’m determined to make the most of our last day in this extraordinary place. I’m also grateful that I didn’t forget my portable phone charger or sunscreen today, unlike the beginning of the trip!

The memories we've made here will stay with me long after we've left, a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that can be found in the most unexpected corners of the world.
