Today was a fantastic blend of education and relaxation, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of adventure that Priya and I always seek. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing these experiences with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From the serene shores of Kálfaströnd to the soothing waters of the Mývatn Nature Baths, Myvatn continues to surprise and delight us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Vogafjós Farm Resort. Waking up to the crisp Icelandic air, we were all eager to start the day. The resort itself is quite charming, and the fact that you can see the cows being milked from the dining area adds a unique touch. I enjoyed some homemade bread and smoked trout, while the others went for the traditional Icelandic skyr. Fuelled up, we set off for our first destination: Sigurgeir's Bird Museum.

A Birder's Paradise
Sigurgeir's Bird Museum was a delightful surprise. I must admit, birdwatching wasn't high on my list of must-do activities, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The museum is a tribute to Sigurgeir Stefánsson, a passionate bird enthusiast who collected an impressive array of Icelandic birds and eggs. The museum houses over 300 stuffed birds and around 500 eggs, offering a comprehensive look at the avian life in the Myvatn area.
The museum is located on the western shores of Lake Myvatn, housed in a traditional Icelandic turf-style building. The lady running the place was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. She shared fascinating facts about each species, pointing out their habitats and migration patterns. What struck me most was the sheer diversity of birdlife in Iceland. From the majestic Gyrfalcon to the adorable Puffin, each bird had its own unique charm. I even learned about the Arctic Tern, a bird that fearlessly attacks anyone who gets too close to its nest – something I'll definitely keep in mind during future hikes.
We spent a good hour exploring the museum, pressing buttons to illuminate the birds and comparing their sizes. The interactive exhibits made it engaging, and I found myself engrossed in learning about these feathered creatures. They even have bird hides that allow you to observe birds in their natural habitat. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see the birds up close without disturbing them.

Tranquility at Kálfaströnd
After the museum, we drove to Kálfaströnd, a beautiful spot on the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn. This area is known for its unique lava formations and abundant birdlife. It was the perfect place for a leisurely stroll and some birdwatching.
The landscape at Kálfaströnd is truly something special. We wandered through bizarre lava formations, remnants of an ancient lava lake. The reddish columns, colored by lichen, added a touch of surreal beauty to the scene. The area is also a haven for ducks, and we spotted several different species swimming in the lake.
As we walked along the shore, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible natural beauty of this region. The combination of volcanic landscapes and serene waters creates a unique and captivating atmosphere. It's easy to see why the Myvatn area is considered one of Iceland's natural treasures.
For lunch, we stopped at Bistro Sel & Pizza. This charming restaurant is linked to the Sel Hotel Myvatn, offering a warm and welcoming ambiance. I decided to try one of their pizzas, and it was absolutely delicious. The crust was perfectly crispy, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. My friend opted for the lamb chops, which he said were cooked to perfection. They also have a decent selection of craft beers, brewed on site.

Soaking in Geothermal Bliss
In the late afternoon, we headed to the Mývatn Nature Baths, also known as the Blue Lagoon of the North. After a day of exploring, the idea of soaking in geothermal waters was incredibly appealing. The Mývatn Nature Baths are a fantastic alternative to the more famous Blue Lagoon, offering a similar experience with fewer crowds and lower prices.

The baths opened in 2004 and have become a popular attraction in the Myvatn area. The water is heated naturally by underground volcanic activity and is rich in minerals like silica and sulfur. These minerals are known for their beneficial effects on the skin, leaving it feeling refreshed and revitalized.
As I sank into the warm, milky blue water, I felt all the tension melt away. The temperature was perfect, around 36-40°C (96-104°F), and the views of the surrounding lava fields were simply breathtaking. There's also a swim-up bar where you can enjoy a drink while soaking in the water. I treated myself to a local beer, savoring the moment of pure relaxation. The baths are spacious, and even with other visitors around, it felt tranquil and serene.
One thing to note is the sulfur content in the water, which gives off a mild sulfuric smell, similar to boiled eggs. It wasn't overpowering, but it's something to be aware of. However, the benefits of the mineral-rich water far outweigh any minor inconvenience.
We spent a couple of hours soaking in the baths, chatting, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted with vibrant colors, creating a magical backdrop for our geothermal experience. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.
For dinner, we decided to try Gamli Bærinn, a cozy restaurant near our guesthouse. This place has a charming, rustic atmosphere, and the menu features pub-style meals with a local twist. I opted for the vegan burger, which was surprisingly delicious. The sauce and salad were flavorful, and it was a welcome change after days of heavier meals. The others enjoyed the Moving Mountains burger.

As I sit here, reflecting on the day's adventures, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Myvatn. The combination of avian exploration and geothermal relaxation was the perfect blend of education and rejuvenation. And sharing these moments with friends makes it all the more special.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Höfði and Skútustaðir, two more gems in the Myvatn area. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us as we continue our journey through this captivating region. I’m particularly looking forward to visiting Höfði.
Before I turn in for the night, I'm going to make sure my camera is charged and ready for another day of capturing Iceland's breathtaking beauty. And maybe I'll double-check that I have sunscreen – even in Iceland, it's better to be safe than sorry!
