Arrival in Myvatn: A Dream Realized
After months of anticipation, I finally set foot in the Myvatn Region of Iceland. The journey from Toronto to Reykjavik and then the drive with my friends to Myvatn was long, but the moment we arrived, I knew it was worth every minute. The crisp, clean air, the vast open landscapes, and the distant volcanic formations created an immediate sense of awe. This trip with my friends is something I've been looking forward to, a chance to escape the hustle of Toronto and immerse ourselves in nature's raw beauty. It's a welcome change from my daily routine as an immigration consultant, a chance to recharge and reconnect with the world.
Our first day was packed with exploration, starting with a hearty breakfast at Vogafjós Farm Resort. The resort itself was a charming introduction to Icelandic hospitality. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and the food was delicious. What made it truly special was the unique dining experience, with large windows offering views directly into the cowshed. It was fascinating to see the animals up close, a reminder of the simple, agricultural life that still thrives in this region. Priya would have loved this place, she always appreciates seeing animals well cared for. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. The breakfast buffet was excellent, offering a wide variety of options to satisfy every palate.

Fueled up, we headed to our first official stop: the Lake Mývatn View Point. The panoramic view of the lake was breathtaking. The sheer scale of the landscape was overwhelming, with the tranquil waters of the lake stretching out before us, dotted with small islands and framed by distant mountains. It was the perfect spot to take it all in and appreciate the unique beauty of this region. We spent a good hour there, snapping photos and simply soaking in the scenery. The air was so clean and fresh, a stark contrast to the city smog I'm used to back in Toronto.

The Myvatn Region is a place where the earth's raw power and serene beauty coexist in perfect harmony, offering a feast for the senses and a balm for the soul.
Next on our itinerary were the Skútustadagígar pseudo craters. These unique formations were unlike anything I had ever seen. Formed by gas explosions when hot lava flowed over wetlands thousands of years ago, they present a landscape of small, grassy hills that seem almost surreal. We took the path around the Skútustadagígar Pond, enjoying the 2-kilometer trail and the opportunity for bird spotting. The area is known for its diverse birdlife, and we were lucky enough to spot several species of waterfowl. The pseudo craters themselves make a picturesque haven for photographers and nature enthusiasts. The surrounding wetlands are a habitat for a diverse range of bird species, making the area a popular site for birdwatching.

The history behind these formations is fascinating. About 2,300 years ago, lava flowed over the Mývatn wetland area during eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir. The lava evaporated the water, creating bubbles that eventually collapsed and formed the craters. Unlike true volcanic craters, these are not connected to an underground flow of magma. Instead, they are the result of steam pockets that erupted or collapsed the crust. It's amazing to think about the geological forces that shaped this landscape over millennia.
After a morning of exploration, we were ready for lunch, and Daddi's Pizza was the perfect choice. This cozy pizzeria offered a relaxed atmosphere and delicious, hand-tossed pizzas. The view of Hverfjall from the patio was an added bonus, making our meal even more enjoyable. I opted for a pizza with smoked trout, a local specialty, and it was fantastic. The crust was perfectly crispy, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. The staff was friendly and accommodating, making us feel right at home. We ordered a large pizza which was plenty for two people.

With our bellies full, we decided to do some shopping at Krambúðin Reykjahlíð. This charming grocery store offered a glimpse into the daily life of the locals, with a selection of both local Icelandic products and international goods. I picked up some Icelandic snacks to take back home to Aarav, who I know will be excited to try them. The store had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was helpful and friendly. It was a great place to stock up on essentials and get a feel for the local culture. The shop also includes self-service checkouts, making your shopping experience quick and easy.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kaffi Borgir for dinner. This family-run café and souvenir shop offered a variety of fast and easy options for a quick but delicious meal. I tried the grilled arctic char with potatoes and Geysir bread, a house specialty, and it was a perfect way to end the day. The arctic char was perfectly cooked, and the Geysir bread had a unique, slightly sweet flavor. The café had a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a great place to relax and reflect on our first day in Myvatn.

Looking back on our first day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. The Myvatn Region has already exceeded my expectations, with its stunning landscapes, unique geological formations, and warm hospitality. Traveling with my friends has made the experience even more special, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Mývatn Nature Baths and Námafjall Hverir Viewpoint, and maybe even grab a drink at R5 Micro Bar [the bar is scheduled in the itinerary]. I'm especially looking forward to relaxing in the geothermal waters of the Nature Baths, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to experience new cultures, and to see the world through different eyes. It's a far cry from the Sega Soccer games I enjoy in Toronto, but a welcome one.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. The Myvatn Region is a truly special place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience its beauty and wonder. I'm excited to share my experiences with you all, and I hope that my words and photos can capture even a fraction of the magic that I've found here. Stay tuned for more adventures from Iceland's Myvatn Region!
