Discover the rejuvenating Mývatn Nature Baths and the otherworldly landscapes of Námafjall Hverir on an unforgettable Icelandic adventure.
Day 2: Embracing Iceland's Volcanic Heart
Today was all about experiencing the raw, geothermal power of Iceland, a land where the earth breathes and bubbles beneath your feet. It was a day of contrasts, from the soothing warmth of the Mývatn Nature Baths to the stark, almost alien landscape of Námafjall Hverir. Come along as I share the highlights of our second day in the Myvatn Region.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. Priya had packed some Mauritian-style gateaux piments for the road, but we couldn't resist trying the local pastries. The cafe was conveniently located near the Mývatn Nature Baths, making it a perfect spot to fuel up before our morning soak. It's amazing how a simple cup of coffee can taste so much better when enjoyed with a view of Iceland's unique landscapes. The weather was chilly, around 48°F, with a chance of rain, so we layered up before heading out. September in Iceland definitely requires some planning when it comes to clothing.
Soaking in Serenity: Mývatn Nature Baths
The Mývatn Nature Baths were our first major stop of the day. Often dubbed the Blue Lagoon of the North, these baths offer a more intimate and less crowded experience. As someone who appreciates a bit of tranquility, this sounded perfect. The water, rich in minerals, is naturally heated by geothermal activity, promising therapeutic benefits. The entrance fee was reasonable, and I was excited to compare it to other geothermal spas I've visited around the world. It's always fascinating to see how different cultures harness the earth's natural energy for relaxation and well-being. I made sure to remove my jewelry, remembering warnings from other travelers about potential discoloration from the minerals.
Stepping into the warm, milky-blue water was heavenly. The air was crisp, and the contrast between the cool breeze and the geothermal warmth was invigorating. The baths are spacious, allowing everyone to find their own little corner of serenity. I found a spot near a rocky outcrop where a mini-waterfall cascaded down, providing a natural shoulder massage. It was the perfect way to unwind and let the stresses of everyday life melt away. I thought about Priya and Aarav back home in Toronto, and how much they would have enjoyed this experience. I made a mental note to bring them here someday.
The Mývatn Nature Baths offer a sanctuary where the warmth of the earth meets the coolness of the Icelandic air, creating a symphony of sensations that rejuvenate both body and soul.
After a couple of hours of blissful soaking, we felt completely refreshed. We rinsed off in the showers and grabbed a quick snack at the Kvika Kaffi, located within the Nature Baths complex. I opted for the traditional geyser bread with smoked arctic char, a local delicacy. It was interesting to learn that the bread is baked using geothermal steam, a testament to the ingenuity of the Icelandic people.
Námafjall Hverir: A Walk on Mars
Our next destination was Námafjall Hverir, a geothermal area known for its otherworldly landscapes. Just a short drive from the Nature Baths, it felt like stepping onto another planet. The landscape is barren, with bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and colorful mineral deposits. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, a reminder of the powerful forces at play beneath the surface.
As we walked along the designated paths, we were surrounded by a symphony of hisses, gurgles, and roars. The ground was a kaleidoscope of colors – yellow from sulfur, red from iron oxide, and white from silica. It was an assault on the senses, both fascinating and slightly unsettling. I couldn't help but think of my late grandfather, who was a geologist. He would have been in his element here, studying the unique geological formations and unraveling the mysteries of the earth's processes.
I was careful to stay on the marked trails, knowing that the ground could be unstable and the mud pools scalding hot. Safety is paramount, especially in such a volatile environment. I took numerous photos, trying to capture the essence of this surreal landscape. It was a challenge, as the sheer scale and intensity of the place were difficult to convey through a lens. I also took a moment to appreciate the silence, broken only by the sounds of the geothermal activity. It was a stark contrast to the bustling city life I'm used to in Toronto.
Dining Delights and Evening Reflections
After our geothermal adventures, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We headed to Gamli Bærinn, a charming restaurant known for its pub-style meals and cozy atmosphere. I opted for a traditional Icelandic lamb soup, while my friends tried the local fish. The portions were generous, and the food was comforting and delicious. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploring.
For dinner, we decided to try Mylla Restaurant, located at the Berjaya Mývatn Hotel. The menu was a blend of Icelandic and European cuisine, offering something for everyone. I decided to go with the three-course menu. The hot spring bread with cured salmon was delicious. The arctic char with leeks was delicious. Finally, the chocolate mousse was the perfect way to end the meal.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to check out R5 Micro Bar. While technically located in Akureyri, we figured we would take a short drive for some local beer. The bar has a great selection of local beers and spirits. I am glad we decided to visit, as it was a great way to wind down the day. It was interesting to chat with the locals and learn more about Icelandic culture and traditions. I even picked up a few phrases in Icelandic, much to the amusement of my friends.
Tonight, as I write this from our cozy guesthouse, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Iceland continues to surprise and amaze me with its natural beauty and unique culture. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the lava field of Dimmuborgir and the Grjótagjá cave, further immersing ourselves in the volcanic wonders of the Mývatn region. The weather forecast predicts more of the same – chilly with a chance of rain – so we'll be sure to pack our layers and waterproof gear. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Handicrafts Market, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Priya and Aarav.
And with that, I bid you goodnight from the land of fire and ice. Stay tuned for more tales from our Icelandic adventure!
