Day 5: Venturing into Iceland's Volcanic Heart

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Mývatn region. We traded the serene lake views for a landscape sculpted by fire and ice, venturing into geothermal areas and exploring hidden caves. It was a day that truly made me feel like an explorer, uncovering the secrets of this volcanic wonderland.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. Situated near the Mývatn Nature Baths, it was the perfect spot to fuel up before our adventures. I opted for the traditional geyser bread with smoked arctic char, a local delicacy I was eager to try. Priya chose a velvety tomato soup. The smoky flavor of the fish paired perfectly with the slightly sweet bread, a testament to the ingenuity of Icelandic cuisine. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore.

Our first stop was Stóragjá, a hidden gem I'd read about before arriving. This small cave, tucked away near Reykjahlið, is home to a geothermal spring. It’s often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, Grótagjá, which gained fame from *Game of Thrones*, but I was drawn to Stóragjá’s secluded and mysterious allure. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself. We followed a narrow path, descending into a rocky ravine. The path was a little slippery, but the ropes and carved steps helped.

As I clambered down, the air grew warmer, and I could hear the gentle lapping of water. Emerging into the cave, I was greeted by the sight of a small, crystal-clear pool. The water was a mesmerizing shade of blue, and steam rose from its surface, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Although tempting, we knew that bathing in Stóragjá isn't recommended due to the presence of algae and bacteria. Still, the cave itself was a sight to behold, a hidden sanctuary carved by nature's forces. I took a moment to soak in the ambiance, imagining what it must have been like for the outlaws who reportedly sought refuge here centuries ago.

Next on our itinerary was Hverir, a geothermal area located near Námafjall Mountain. As we approached, the landscape transformed dramatically. The lush green fields gave way to a barren, otherworldly terrain of red and orange soil, bubbling mud pools, and steaming vents. The air was thick with the pungent scent of sulfur, a reminder of the powerful forces at work beneath the surface.

Walking through Hverir felt like stepping onto another planet. The ground was hot beneath my feet, and plumes of steam billowed around us, creating an eerie and surreal atmosphere. We carefully followed the marked paths, mindful of the dangers lurking just beyond. The bubbling mud pools were mesmerizing, each one a miniature volcano spewing forth a thick, grey sludge. The fumaroles hissed and groaned, releasing jets of superheated steam into the air. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the immense power of nature on display here.

After exploring the geothermal wonders of Hverir, we drove to Kaffi Sel and Mývatn Öl brewery. I was keen to sample some local Icelandic beer. This charming café and brewery is known for its freshly brewed local beers and homemade dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. I decided to try the Mývatn Öl, a beer brewed on-site. Priya enjoyed a cup of coffee, and we shared a plate of *skyr* cake, a traditional Icelandic dessert. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

As evening approached, we made our way to Daddi's Pizza for dinner. After a day of exploring, we were both craving something comforting and familiar. Daddi's Pizza is a family-run pizzeria that serves delicious, hand-tossed pizzas made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. I ordered a pizza with smoked trout from Lake Mývatn, a local specialty that I couldn't resist. Priya opted for a classic pepperoni pizza, and we shared a side of garlic bread. The pizza was delicious, the perfect blend of crispy crust, flavorful sauce, and fresh toppings. It was exactly what we needed after a long day of exploring.

Finally, we headed to Fosshotel Mývatn for dinner. Located near Lake Mývatn, the restaurant offered Nordic cuisine crafted from local ingredients. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the views were amazing. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

As I write this, nestled in our cozy guesthouse, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of today. From the hidden depths of Stóragjá to the geothermal wonders of Hverir, the Mývatn region has revealed its raw, untamed beauty. It's a place that challenges the senses, inspires the imagination, and leaves a lasting impression on the soul.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Sigurgeir's Bird Museum, followed by a visit to Kálfaströnd [If tomorrow is the last day of the trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm looking forward to learning more about the unique birdlife of this region and exploring the shores of Lake Mývatn. Until then, goodnight from Iceland!
