Whispers of Gerês

As my solo adventure in Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of reconnection with nature. Today was a blend of historical exploration, natural beauty, and culinary delights, creating a perfect farewell to this serene paradise. The crisp morning air and the promise of new discoveries filled me with anticipation, eager to embrace the final day of my adventure.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Novas Pontes. Fuelled with traditional Portuguese pastries and strong coffee, I prepared for a day of exploration. The weather forecast predicted isolated thunderstorms, but I hoped the rain would hold off long enough for me to enjoy the outdoor activities I had planned.

First on my itinerary was a visit to the iconic Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês itself. Even on my last day, the park's vastness and beauty continued to amaze me. I spent the morning driving through winding roads, stopping at scenic overlooks to capture the breathtaking views. The park was relatively quiet, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the tranquility of the surroundings. The fresh air, the sound of birds chirping, and the distant bleating of sheep created a symphony of nature that resonated deeply within me.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Next, I ventured towards the Ponte Velha de Castro Laboreiro, an ancient Roman bridge. As I approached the bridge, I was struck by its historical significance and architectural beauty. The bridge, also known as Ponte da Cava da Velha, is located in the civil parish of Castro Laboreiro e Lamas de Mouro. Built in the 1st century, it has stood the test of time, connecting the Roman road to Espanha through Portela do Homem. The bridge was reconstructed in the Middle Ages, and its granite structure exudes a sense of timelessness. I walked across the bridge, imagining the countless travelers who had crossed it centuries ago, and felt a deep connection to the past. The surrounding landscape was equally captivating, with the Laboreiro River flowing gently beneath the bridge and lush greenery adorning the riverbanks.

After exploring the Roman bridge, I decided to visit the Cascata da Laja, a stunning waterfall nestled in the heart of Gerês. The hike to the waterfall was relatively easy, taking me through a beautiful forest. The trail was well-maintained, and the sound of rushing water grew louder as I approached my destination. When I finally reached the waterfall, I was mesmerized by its beauty. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a refreshing mist that cooled the air. I spent some time admiring the waterfall, taking photos, and simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

For lunch, I stopped at O Pimpão, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with friendly staff who made me feel right at home. I ordered a hearty meal of *cozido à portuguesa*, a traditional Portuguese stew, and savored every bite. The flavors were rich and comforting, providing the perfect fuel for the rest of my day's adventures.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in some local shopping at Supermercado Amanhecer Gerês. I wanted to pick up some souvenirs and local products to take back home to Hans and remind me of my trip. The supermarket had a wide selection of regional delicacies, including Portuguese wines, cheeses, and honey. I purchased a few bottles of Vinho Verde, a local green wine, and some artisanal cheese, hoping to share the flavors of Gerês with Hans.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurante Adega Ramalho for my final dinner in Gerês. This charming restaurant is known for its traditional Minho cuisine and cozy ambiance. I ordered *cabrito assado*, roasted goat, a local specialty, and paired it with a glass of red wine. The meal was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I reflected on my journey, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region and reconnect with nature.

Today, as I reflect on my journey, I realize how much this solo trip meant to me. It was an opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse myself in the tranquility of nature. I discovered hidden gems, explored ancient ruins, and savored the flavors of local cuisine. Most importantly, I reconnected with myself, finding peace and inspiration in the natural beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park.

The weather in Peneda-Gerês National Park in early May can be unpredictable. It's essential to pack layers and be prepared for rain. Despite the occasional showers, the park's beauty shines through, offering a unique and unforgettable experience.

The stunning landscapes, the historical sites, and the delicious food have left an indelible mark on my soul. Peneda-Gerês National Park is a truly special place, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced its magic.

Tomorrow, I will embark on my journey back to Berlin, carrying with me the tranquility and inspiration I found in this natural haven. While there are no specific itinerary items for tomorrow, the trip home will be a time for reflection and planning future adventures. I am eager to share my experiences with Hans and to incorporate the lessons I've learned into my daily life as an urban beekeeper. Perhaps I can even bring a touch of Gerês to our rooftop garden in Neukölln.

Leaving Peneda-Gerês, I feel a sense of renewal and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. This solo adventure has reminded me of the importance of disconnecting from the everyday and reconnecting with the earth. As I return to Berlin, I carry with me the whispers of Gerês, a reminder to seek out tranquility and inspiration in the beauty that surrounds us.
