A Solo Adventure in Peneda-Gerês National Park
Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Discovering Serenity in Gerês
Explore Peneda-Gerês National Park's hidden gems: stunning waterfalls, serene lagoons, and local flavors. A solo journey of nature and tranquility.
Finding Peace in the Heart of Gerês
Today was all about immersing myself in the raw, untamed beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park. It’s amazing how quickly the hustle of Berlin fades into a distant memory when you’re surrounded by the sounds of rushing water and the scent of pine. My journey today was a quest for tranquility, a search for those hidden corners where nature whispers secrets only to those who listen.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at O Encontro - Por Marcação. I opted for a simple but satisfying meal of local bread, cheese, and a strong coffee to fuel my adventures. It’s funny how the simplest things can taste extraordinary when you’re in the right place. Energized, I set off towards my first destination: Miradouro da Fraga Negra.

The drive itself was a treat, winding through narrow roads flanked by granite boulders and lush vegetation. As I climbed higher, the views became increasingly panoramic. Finally, I reached the *miradouro*, and the vista took my breath away. The Caniçada reservoir stretched out before me, a shimmering expanse of blue framed by rolling hills. I spent a good half-hour simply soaking it all in, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It’s moments like these that remind me why I crave these solo adventures. The viewpoint offered a detailed perspective of the Gerês valley, with the village nestled at the bottom.
From there, I ventured on to Fonte da Batoca , a serene spot known for its natural spring.

The area surrounding the spring was quiet and shaded, a perfect place for a moment of reflection. I refilled my water bottle with the cool, clear water, feeling grateful for the simple gifts of nature. It’s these small moments of connection that make a trip truly special. I thought about Hans back in Berlin, probably immersed in lines of code. I made a mental note to bring him here someday; I know he’d appreciate the tranquility.
Next on the itinerary was Poço Negro , a spot that had been highly recommended by several locals.

The name translates to Black Well, which sounded a bit ominous, but I was assured that the reality was far more enchanting. The drive to Poço Negro was an adventure in itself, with the road narrowing to a single lane in places. I parked the car and followed a short trail through the woods, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and pine.
Finally, I arrived at Poço Negro, and it was even more magical than I had imagined. A waterfall cascaded into a deep, emerald-green pool, surrounded by granite cliffs and lush vegetation. Despite its name, the water was crystal clear, and I could see the smooth, colorful stones lining the bottom. I couldn't resist taking a dip, the water was cold but invigorating, and I felt utterly refreshed as I swam beneath the cascading water.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After my swim, I spent some time simply lounging on the rocks, soaking up the sun and listening to the soothing sounds of the waterfall. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reconnect with nature. I thought about my bees back in Berlin, and how much they would love this place. The diversity of flora here is astounding, and I imagined the honey they could produce from these blossoms.

As an urban beekeeper, I'm always on the lookout for sustainable products and practices. The store was a delightful find, offering a range of eco-friendly goods, from organic soaps to locally made crafts. I picked up a few items, including a beeswax candle made with honey from the park, a perfect reminder of my trip.
With the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, it was time to think about dinner. I drove to Soajo, a charming village known for its traditional *espigueiros* (granaries). I had made a reservation at Restaurante Espigueiro do Soajo , a local favorite known for its hearty, traditional dishes.

I started with a bowl of *caldo verde*, a classic Portuguese soup made with potatoes, kale, and chorizo. For my main course, I opted for the roasted goat, a local specialty. The meat was tender and flavorful, and it was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the park.
As I savored my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the panoramic views at Miradouro da Fraga Negra to the refreshing waters of Poço Negro, every moment had been a gift. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Peneda-Gerês National Park. This solo trip has been exactly what I needed – a chance to disconnect from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with myself and with nature. I am already anticipating tomorrow's adventures, which will include a visit to the Minas dos Carris, Miradouro da Ermida and Reserva de la Biosfera Transfronteriza Gerês-Xurés. Before heading back to my accommodation, I plan to stop by Pirata Do Gerês for a nightcap.
Before heading back to my accommodation, I plan to stop by Pirata Do Gerês for a nightcap. I also considered some of the other restaurants in the area, like Adega Regional, known for its fresh fish and cozy atmosphere , and Vai Gerês, popular for its stylish presentation and vegetarian options. Maybe I'll try one of them tomorrow!
Back at my campsite, as I write this, the stars are beginning to pepper the night sky. I can hear the gentle murmur of a nearby stream and the distant hoot of an owl. It’s a symphony of nature that lulls me into a state of blissful relaxation. Tomorrow is my last full day in the park, and I plan to make the most of it. I am already looking forward to more hiking, more swimming, and more moments of quiet contemplation in this beautiful corner of Portugal. Good night, world.
The next day, I plan to explore Minas dos Carris, Miradouro da Ermida, and Reserva de la Biosfera Transfronteriza Gerês-Xurés. I'm also considering visiting some local shops to pick up souvenirs for Hans and my friends back in Berlin. And of course, I'll be sure to sample more of the local cuisine!
