Stepping Back in Time in Shirakawa-go

Today, Hans and I truly immersed ourselves in the enchanting world of Shirakawa-go. Leaving behind the modern hustle, we found ourselves transported to a place where time seemed to slow down, and the beauty of traditional Japanese culture unfolded before our eyes. It was a day of exploration, delicious food, and heartwarming encounters, solidifying our love for sustainable travel and cultural immersion.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hiiragi. I had read so much about their Hida beef skewers and was eager to try them. The restaurant was cozy, with friendly staff who made us feel right at home. The Hida beef was indeed as delicious as everyone said—tender, flavorful, and perfectly grilled. Hans opted for the Hoba miso yaki, which came sizzling on a magnolia leaf. The aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water. We savored every bite, feeling grateful for this authentic culinary experience.

In the heart of Shirakawa-go, every corner holds a story, every meal is a celebration of local flavors, and every moment is a step back in time.

After breakfast, we set out to explore Ogimachi, the largest village in Shirakawa-go. The gassho-style houses, with their steeply pitched thatched roofs resembling hands in prayer, were even more impressive up close. It’s amazing to think that these structures, some over 250 years old, were designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region. We wandered through the narrow pathways, admiring the meticulously maintained gardens and the tranquil rice fields.

The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the bustling streets of Berlin. I couldn’t help but think about my bees back home, and how they would thrive in this pristine environment. It reinforced my commitment to promoting sustainable living, both in my urban beekeeping and in my travels.

Next on our itinerary was the Myozenji Museum. This museum, housed in a former monk's residence next to the main temple, offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of Shirakawa-go. The building itself was a stunning example of gassho-style architecture, and the exhibits showcased everyday items and tools used by the villagers in the past. We learned about the traditional farming practices, the importance of silk farming, and the unique social structures that have shaped this community.

Hans, with his engineering mind, was particularly intrigued by the intricate roof structure, secured by straw ropes and witch hazel saplings. I was captivated by the displays of kitchen utensils and ornaments, imagining the lives of the families who once lived here. It was a humbling experience to connect with the past and appreciate the resilience and ingenuity of the local people.

For lunch, we decided to try Zensuke, a popular spot known for its Hida beef skewers and Gohei mochi. The aroma of freshly baked dumplings and Hida milk wafted through the air, enticing us to step inside. We ordered a selection of skewers, including the Hida beef and chicken meatball, and a Gohei mochi to share. The Hida beef was tender and flavorful, while the Gohei mochi had a unique blend of sweetness and saltiness that was simply exquisite. It was a quick and satisfying meal, perfect for fueling our afternoon adventures.

As we strolled through the village, we couldn't resist stopping at a few local shops. I picked up some handmade crafts as souvenirs, supporting the local artisans and bringing a piece of Shirakawa-go back to Berlin. Hans found a beautiful postcard depicting the village in winter, which he plans to send to his parents.

In the late afternoon, we treated ourselves to a drink at Shiraogi, a cozy bar known for its local brews and friendly atmosphere. We chatted with the bartender, who shared stories about the village and its traditions. He recommended we try the Doburoku, a local specialty alcohol, an unfiltered sake. It was a unique and potent drink, perfect for warming us up on a cool summer evening. As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Shirakawa-go.

For dinner, we chose Gassho, a charming restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. I had read that their special ramen features an exceptionally thick soup base, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but we were seated quickly. The ramen was indeed unique, with a rich and flavorful broth that warmed us from the inside out. Hans opted for the Hoba miso pork, which offered a deep, sweet, and nutty flavor that paired perfectly with the local Hida pork. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the gassho-style houses, we took one last stroll through the village. The air was filled with the sounds of crickets chirping and the gentle murmur of the river. It was a scene of pure tranquility, a moment we will cherish forever.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Shirakawa-go is more than just a picturesque village; it's a living testament to the power of community, sustainability, and cultural preservation. It’s a place where the past and present coexist in harmony, where the beauty of nature is celebrated, and where the warmth of human connection is palpable.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Midorigaike Pond and Water Lily Pond, seeking more of the natural beauty that this region has to offer. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Kobikiya. I am excited to see what new adventures await us!

This experience reminded me of something my grandmother used to say back in Alcalá de Guadaira: "The best journeys are those that lead us back to ourselves." And indeed, Shirakawa-go has a way of reconnecting you with the simple joys of life, the beauty of nature, and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.

Until tomorrow,
Lucia.
